Lampwork Glass
Class
October 14-15
On October 14-15, Lisa
St. Martin will bring her working glass studio to The DRA gallery for a
two-day workshop. Each participant will have his
own workstation. Torches,
tools and glass will be provided.
Lisa
happily welcomes all skill levels, however this will be an ideal setting for a
beginner wanting to try their hand at this ancient craft with minimal
investment. You’ll have the opportunity to practice shaping the glass beads,
with tools (and gravity!), decorating your pieces with fine strands of
contrasting colors applied as stripes or dots. As the weekend progresses you’ll
become more proficient in moving the glass in the flame, forming the beads and
blending colors.
As you
gain confidence using the materials, you can start imagining and designing your
own beads. Lisa will help you think through construction of your design for
optimal success. The experienced student can work with Lisa one-on-one to learn
more advanced skills and techniques, so come ready with your current
challenges. If you’d appreciate some constructive criticism, bring samples of
your work.
Learn
more about Lisa St. Martin at her website
www.glassbeads.com.
The
workshop will take place on Saturday and Sunday, October 14-15, 2006 at the DRA
gallery. 10 AM-5 PM. Fee is $185 for DRA members, $205 for non-members.
All
materials will be provided, please bring a sack lunch. Maximum of 8
participants, pre-registration required. To register, contact Joan Ulrich
at ulrichclay@aol.com or call Joan at 703.660.2382. |

YOU'RE INVITED TO A
'SEWING BEE' FOR A GOOD CAUSE
WHAT FOR?
Join the Del Ray Artisans and friends and share our recent
discovery of a useful, comforting item for mastectomy survivors--a
Recovery Cover.
Del Ray Artisans member artist and survivor Theresa Kulstad
is shown modeling the Recovery Cover which not only holds the
post-surgery drain bottle, it frees up the patient’s hand and hides the
depressing-looking bottle!
WHY A 'BEE"?
Some local surgeons and nurses have expressed interest in
obtaining these Recovery Covers for their patients, so the Del Ray
Artisans and Springwater Fiber Workshop decided to co-sponsor this
opportunity so that nurses, hospitals and support groups can become
aware of how convenient, lightweight and effortless it is to make these
Recovery Covers. We are making the Cover pattern available and are
providing an opportunity for many hands to make Covers to distribute to
patients throughout the greater Washington Metropolitan area. To the
best of our knowledge, Recovery Covers are not commercially available
yet.
WHEN?
Saturday, September 23rd , 2006 between l0 AM and 5PM. Drop
in to make covers and stay as long as you like. The company will be good
and you’ll be giving back to a good cause.
WHERE?
The Del Ray Artisans Gallery
2704 Mt. Vernon Ave
Alexandria, VA 2230l.
It's a white building located at the intersection of Mt.
Vernon and Commonwealth Avenues. Free parking is available on the
street, in a small lot adjacent to the gallery and across the street
from the gallery in a bank parking lot.
WHAT SHOULD WE BRING?
Your time and your enthusiasm! And
especially any narrow grosgrain ribbon; and small samples of cheerful,
light cotton fabric that you would like to use. We will have plenty of
fabric and sewing machines available. Some may prefer to hand sew, while
others prefer measuring or cutting fabric templates. If you cannot come
to the Bee, you can request a pattern by contacting Jane at
703.548.2612.
Thanks and we hope to see you at this enriching and
valuable community outreach event.

pick up debris at the park located at Mt. Vernon &
Commonwealth Avenues adjacent to the gallery. You only need
to pick up on one of the days with Sunday being the
best since the City inspections are on Monday morning. It
only takes 20-30 minutes.

“WASHINGTON WOOD 2005” AND “STILL LIFE,
LANDSCAPE AND OTHER PERSPECTIVES”
From the modern design aesthetic of local furniture
maker Hugh Belton to the signature fluted trumpet bell
forms of Phil Brown, “Washington Wood 2005” and the
concurrent Del Ray Artisans’ “Still Life, Landscape and
Other Perspectives” exhibits will present a juried
selection of work in the gallery which curator Martin
Angebranndt promises will be another exciting
collaboration of the two groups. Among the wood pieces
created by twenty Washington Woodworkers Guild members
will be Patrick O’Brien, who specializes in natural edge
turnings; John Noffsinger, a turner specializing in post
turning treatments including pyrography and dyed woods,
and Alan Becker, who was recently featured in "Élan"
design magazine.
Angebranndt, who is also an accomplished woodworker,
will be debuting his piece "Challenged Perspectives--an
homage to William Bailey.” Angebranndt describes the
piece as being “made of walnut and walnut-veneered
plywood with the shelf tilting downward at 3.5 degrees.
Each of the turned objects on the shelf is turned in two
axis to allow them to sit plumb on the tilted surface to
surprise the viewer. The arrangement of objects recalls
still life paintings with dueling perspectives such
those by William Bailey.”
Displayed on the walls will be the “Still Life,
Landscape and Other Perspectives” exhibit which will
feature art by ten Del Ray Artisan members. The exhibit
includes work by watercolorist Alice Kale, known for her
skilled renderings of the Del Ray neighborhood, along
with photography, paintings and more by Barbara
Chiminello, Candace Clifford, Michele Reday Cook,
Beverly Hilbert, Steve Polo and Diane McClaugherty.
Washington Wood 2005 and Still Life, Landscape and Other
Perspectives will run through Sunday, November 27, 2005.
Gallery hours are Saturdays, 10-4PM and Sundays,
noon-4PM.
