Autumnal-The Measure of the Season

In 1819 John Keats penned a poem called "To Autumn" which still beautifully paints this season in 2005. "...close bosom-friend of the maturing sun, Conspiring with him, To set budding more, and still more, later flowers for bees, Until they think warm days will never cease." Or consider this short quote "Season of mist and mellow fruitfulness..." This captures the essence of the popular Fall Member Show "Autumnal" talents from September 9- October 1. The exhibit will have evening hours on two Thursdays with First Thursday, September 1(6-9pm) and Thursday, September 8(6-9pm)As a BONUS, the show has been extended to include the 10th Annual Art on the Avenue Festival Saturday, October 1st (10AM-6PM) with hundreds more eyes measuring our members’ art. From noon to 4:00PM the gallery will feature free dance performances by CCP, “quick sketches” of children by Angela Maray and a hands-on workshop for making holiday gift paper and tags.

Pool Party and Pie...Waaay Cool !

Even on a rainy Tuesday with only two lone swimmers at Del Ray Artisans’ annual Pool Party, August 16th, over 75 members, friends and neighbors came to the join the fun! Marlin Lord had the grill sizzlin’ with delicious New York wieners served up with a scrumptious summer spread. There was a quiet hush as the much-coveted My Oh My! I Love Pie contest judges were selected. New members John Herman and Norman Zalfa and DRA Volunteer chair Vivienne Lukacs were delighted to have the extremely "difficult" job of judging the 9 homemade pies.

1st Place: Lilia & Bianca Lo   "Apple Coconut with Raisins & Cranberries"
2nd Place:
Jen Chappell  "Pecan Pie with a Yankee Twist"
3rd Place:
Eileen Powell  "Chocolate Cream Pie"
All in all, the food was fab, members mingled and a good "pie" was had by all!

AfterSPLASH

The artists of SPLASH extend many thanks to everyone who helped make the show a success. First on the list are the Choreographers Collaborative Project  dancers for their delightful SPLASH-themed performances on First Thursday.

Secondly, without the invaluable assistance, artistic touch and expertise  of the following people SPLASH wouldn't have SPLASHED at all: Charlotte Corcoran, Brian Marquis, Roy Wright, Christopher Wright and Richard Wyvill; AVB volunteers Raymond Ejiofor, Reed Griffith, Martinia Rich and Zaneta Tutuh!

The Friday opening reception was fun and ran smoothly, thanks in no small measure to reception volunteers Colleen Sherlock,

Sharon Reilly, Kathryn Brown, Brett Chappell, David Kosar,  Marlin Lord, Tina Mullen, Ayse Ongun, Rob Rudick, Ted Smouse and Kimberly Tyler. Royce Flowers' amazing floral arrangement looked as though it was freshly picked from the Frida Kahlo portrait in the show. Rave reviews for goodies provided by Theresa Kulstad and Herman Mejias, owner of Los Tios.

A few SPLASH stats:
Silent Auction – $310
Sales –  $2,300+
Pieces exhibited – 45 (15 per artist)
First Thursday attendance – 75
Opening attendance – 200+
Pool Party attendance – 75+

Creative Camping at Del Ray Artisans

From July 25th through 29th, nineteen young artists aged 11-15 camped at the Del Ray Artisans gallery, as part of DRA’s annual outreach program, Art Camp. The group created an amazing collection of artwork under the tutelage of six extremely talented and patient teachers. Dianne McClaugherty introduced them to the art of calligraphy, Beverly Hansen taught  decoupage, Jewel Lewis-Terry taught pottery and Charlotte Corcoran had them  stamping, stenciling and learning decorative painting techniques. Margaret Wohler  held a nature drawing session, and Dianne Diatz was a bundle of energy with wire sculpture and mixed media mosaics!

Volunteers were on hand each  day along with delicious lunches provided by Caboose Cafe. Special thanks to Theresa Kulstad, Karen Schmitz, Susan Slattery, and AVB volunteers and interns: Claudia Bruzzo, Bridget Donahue, Raymond Ejiofor, and Martinia Rich.

DRA was also very fortunate to receive some very generous financial support from several sponsors: Alexandria Hyundai, Community Partners for Children, DRA member Ellyn Ferguson, and Jack Taylor of Jack Taylor Toyota. This made it possible to offer scholarships to some of the youth who participated. Thank you all!

DRA Board members needed-Election October 18th

Due to serious illness and a move overseas, DRA is currently without a full complement of Board members. Among the positions open are Secretary, Membership and Programs. Filling these vacancies is critical to the smooth operation and continued success of DRA

So bring your talents and enthusiasm to the table by contacting Nominating Committee members Theresa Kulstad (tkulstad@verizon.net) or Vivienne Lukacs (703.979.8996). The board will be meeting in early September to discuss current chair positions' responsibilities and the addition of new chairs.
