Among the twenty Woodworkers Guild members exhibiting will be Patrick O’Brien, who specializes in natural edge turnings; John Noffsinger, a turner who specializes in post turning treatments including pyrography and dyed woods, and Alan Becker, who was recently featured in "Élan" design magazine. Curator Angebranndt, also an accomplished woodworker, will be exhibiting his piece "Challenged Perspectives--an homage to William Bailey” in the show. Angebranndt describes the piece as being “made of walnut and walnut-veneered plywood with the shelf tilting downward at 3.5 degrees. Each turned object on the shelf is turned in two axis to allow them to sit plumb on the tilted surface to surprise the viewer. The arrangement of objects recalls still life paintings with dueling perspectives such those by William Bailey.”Displayed on the walls will be the “Still Life, Landscape and Other Perspectives” exhibit which will feature art by ten DRA members. The exhibit includes work by watercolorist Alice Kale, known for her skilled renderings of Del Ray, along with photography, paintings and more by Barbara Chiminello, Candace Clifford, Michele Reday Cook, Beverly Hilbert, Steve Polo and Diane McClaugherty. Opening Friday, November 4 (7-10 PM), the concurrent shows will run through Sunday, November 27, 2005. Gallery hours are Saturdays, 10-4PM / Sundays, noon-4PM.
A Holiday
Market of fine art, fine crafts, food and gifts The Del Ray Artisans’ Holiday Fine Art & Fine Crafts Holiday Market will be the place to go this holiday season to find everything you need to celebrate—exquisite gifts created by members, festive baked goods to indulge your sweet-tooth and support a good cause, a chance to create and sell your own ornaments and lots of good fun! The festivities begin Friday evening, December 2, with a Wine and Cheese preview reception from 7–10 PM. Saturday, the gallery will open at 10 AM and extend its evening hours through the Tree lighting next door as Del Ray celebrates Holiday on the Avenue. Sunday hours are noon-5 PM. In conjunction with the Market, Food for Thought, our holiday bake sale, will tempt you with seasonal treats—a great chance to share your holiday favorites and find new ones, too! Proceeds go to support DRA's Katrina Relief efforts for artists. An exciting addition this year is the Holiday Ornament Tree! DRA members may stop by the gallery in coming weeks to purchase as many as three blank wood ornaments ($1 each) to decorate. Members are encouraged to create ornaments reflective of their personal artistic style. Completed ornaments must be returned during regular gallery hours—no later than Thursday, December 1st, between 6:30-8:30 PM. Please price ornaments ahead of time. All ornament proceeds will go directly to the artists, who need not be present for the ornament sale. All of this could not happen without the work of a number of individuals. Many thanks go to our two jurors, Joe Egerton (Arts Afire) and Carol Supplee (Imagine Artwear). Also a special thank you to Becky Heavner for her contribution of creative artwork for our publicity. We also thank the following people who volunteered to serve on the committee and make this event happen: Market coordinator Laurel Lukaszewski, Kathryn Brown, Angela Calos, Vicky Choy, Theresa Kulstad, Vivienne Lukacs, Karen Schmitz, Linda Silk, Susan Slattery and Joan Ulrich. Volunteers are still needed for Market weekend to sell holiday food items, sit the gallery and help publicize the Market. To help, please contact Laurel Lukaszewski at laurelsl@hotmail.com. Want an aMUSEing start to the New Year?
The Ancient Muses were the Greek goddesses who
presided over the arts and sciences, inspiring those who excel at those
pursuits. In fact, the word museum is derived from Muses meaning "a place or
source of inspiration.” In January 2006, the "Name Your Muse" juried show,
curated by
Richard Wyvill and Karen
Georgia O’Keefe had the stunning American Southwest as her Muse, while Edward Weston’s wife Charis was the inspiration (and his model) for a famous series of nude photographs. John Lennon composed “Imagine” as a utopian anthem to his dream of world peace. Let Name Your Muse reveal the inspiration(s) behind your work! Exhibit dates are January 6-29. The exhibit call for entry is enclosed in this newsletter. Blue or Red parties were not an issue at DRA’s annual October 18 meeting. The winning party was Purple (for the Del Ray Artisans)! Forty official votes approved a slate of fifteen to the 2006 Board. Delicious Asian-influenced edibles prepared by Theresa Kulstad and Jen Chappell were enjoyed by those in attendance. President Susan Slattery and team gave state-of-the-art reviews of 2005, and presented the 2006 DRA calendar with a light, artsy, yet professional, approach! A very special thank you to “retiring” Vice President Jen Chappell for her dedicated work on the Board. Jen is stepping down to enjoy being a first-time home buyer, and has also taken a new job at the Washington Design Center. Jen's contributions to such projects as grants writing, the curators’ manual, co-curating of "Aloha Elvis” and "SPLASH!,” co-chairing "Red" and "Red2" (not to mention her photography skills!), have greatly enhanced DRA. Her cool, Icelandic charm will be missed. "A Show of Hands," a new retail store, located at 2204 Mt. Vernon Avenue, showcasing original art in Del Ray, will hold their grand opening Sunday, December 3rd, from 3-6:00 PM. The store, owned by Pat Miller and Maria Wasowski, will sell original art from local artists. "We're hopeful that we can provide the community original fine crafts and art hand-made by local artists," said Pat. The shop will consign with artists to sell their work. "We are hopeful local artists will consign with us so we can show the public what great works our artists create." What a great opportunity for DRA artists!
