Students' show showcase arriving
One of the largest, most time-consuming (from a
preparation standpoint), gallery-packing exhibits is the annual Student Show.
This year it opens on May 12th. Organizer Linda Silk,
has been busy finishing the details for this show before the hundreds of works
are delivered to the gallery. The week before the opening involves significant amounts of time to organize and hang the show. Please contact either Barbara Boehm - Volunteer Chair at 703.838.6265 or barbxb@yahoo.com, or Linda Silk to lend some assistance. And mark your calendar for the night of the 12th for the 7-9:30PM opening. Join the Board of Directors, fellow members and artists for another quarterly general meeting on Tuesday, May 16th at 7:30PM and artist networking opportunity. As usual, munchies and beverages will be served. Announcements of upcoming activities and other items will be on the agenda.
You might have noticed an elated Anna Bohlin Sternd beaming "rainbows all over the gallery" when she found out that her Seaflowers" mosaic not only won an equal merit award but also sold! Likewise for glass artist Ron Tickerhoff who sold "Ocean Wave." "This cobalt blue kiln formed glass is done in a series of strips that takes 3 months to complete,” explained Ron. Later in April, Co-curator Karen Schmitz made the day for new member Sharon Schultz when she told her the painting "Boats in A Greek Harbor" had been sold. Oldrich Olubar also received a congratulatory call that his “Spring at the Basin" painting had sold. Schmitz explains that she knows these sales not only give artists a boost but shows the membership that artwork really can sell at DRA. Total sales, with one week still to go in the month, stood at a over $2,300.00! Quite the thing to put a spring in everyone’s step. This show had it all!!! Ceramics by Teresa Haggerty, wood sculpture by Alan Becker, purses by Jennifer Athanas, photography by Fierce Sonia, organic jewelry by Courtney Brownewell, even a reflecting pool for Barb Craley's stained glass egret & seagull provided by co-curators Susan Slattery and Karen Schmitz. Three Equal Merit awards for recognition of outstanding work were presented: Grace Hill for her oil, "Springtime," Laurel Lukaszewski for her black stoneware work, "Neruda's Ode" and Anna Bohlin Sternd for her mosaic, "Seaflowers." Special thanks to poet M. Magnus for painting the opening reception with words and bringing his art-loving friend. Many thanks to all the show’s "blossoms" Brian Marquis, Laurel Lukaszewski, Linda Eliff, Juli Branson, Courtney Brownewell, Jen Chappell, David Kosar, Irene Hoffman, Kathryn Brown, Marlin Lord, Michele Reday Cook, Liz Martinez, Nicole Basso, Irene Hoffman, Charlotte Corcoran, Juli Branson, Jamee Telford, Barbara Boehm, Ted Smouse ....and....that adorable, magical hoppin’ brown bunny!
There are 23 artists participating: Jill Amstutz (painting), Jen Athenias (accessories), Catherine Bott and Courtney Brownewell (jewelry), Kimberley Bush (pottery), Barbara Chiminello (painting), Candace Clifford (photography), Worth Cooley-Prost (jewelry), Barbara Craley & family (stained glass and jewelry), Linda Eliff (jewelry), Oeone Hammersley (painting), Paige Ireland (photography), Julie Jernigan (jewelry), Jewell Lewis-Terry (pottery), Laurel Lukaszewski (wearable sculpture), Patti North-Rudin (jewelry), Patrick O'Brien (turned wood), Michelle Reday Cook (painting), Rob Rudick (photography), Edith Sanabria (jewelry and miniatures), Leah Sturgis (jewelry), Kimberley Tyler (illustrated stationery and lithographs), and Heidi Varblow (framed embroidery).
