Annual Spring Outdoor Art Sale
The 2nd Annual Del Ray Artisans Spring Outdoor Art Sale will be held Saturday, May 7th, (the day before Mother's Day), 10:00 AM-5:00 PM. The sale will take place in the Nicholas A. Colasanto Park, which adjoins the DRA gallery at 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue. Twenty-two DRA members are banding together to show and sell their creations "aux pleine air." Sale coordinator Rob Rudick hopes that DRA members will bring their friends and their checkbooks to support this event! it's a great opportunity to see a lot art from a lot of artists, many of whom will offer unframed or matted work priced lower than framed pieces. The timing of the sale will also afford buyers a chance to buy one-of-a-kind gifts for Mother's Day. May General Member Meeting-Hats off to volunteers
Come and Be Appreciated at the General Member meeting, Tuesday, May 17th, 7:30PM. The theme is Volunteer Appreciation. Relax, kick back, enjoy pizza and celebrate (or pat yourself on the back) DRA's strong spirit of volunteerism! Participate in the "Give 'n Get" (a warm, fuzzy feeling) by bringing an item to donate to the residents of Alexandria's Carpenter's Shelter. We'll be collecting and delivering them to the shelter. See list below for their specific needs at this time:
DRA's gallery space will be filled with exciting artwork from nearly two hundred Alexandria students May 6-29. Since 1997, DRA has sponsored this exhibition of artwork by students from Minnie Howard School, F.C. Hammond Middle School, George Washington Middle School, and T.C. Williams High School. The show, curated by Linda Silk, is the result of a yearlong collaboration of Alexandria's 6th-12th grade art teachers, their students and the Del Ray Artisans. It's a win-win situation: emerging artists have an opportunity to exhibit in a public setting while the community has a chance to see what young artists are creating today. Ribbons will be awarded in a variety of media by a judging panel of professional artists. The exhibit opening reception will be held Friday, May 6th, 7-9:30 PM. The recipient of the DRA-Ted Eichers Memorial Art Scholarship will also be announced during the reception. A show preview will be held May 5th, during First Thursday in Del Ray (6-9:00 PM). Bead n. 4. A small perforated body, spherical or otherwise, of glass, amber, metal, wood, etc. used as an ornament, either strung in a series to form a necklace, bracelet, etc. or sewn upon various fabrics. Oxford English Dictionary Beads are coming to the DRA gallery! On June 3rd Bead It! opens with a collection of handmade beads plus wearable and non-wearable bead art. The show runs until June 26. The opening reception, June 3rd (7-10PM), will feature a demonstration of glass beadmaking!
There will be a first prize of a $100 gift certificate for each of three categories (handmade bead, wearable bead art and non wearable bead art). The certificates are from Arts Afire, Imagine Artwear, and Michaels Arts and Crafts. Barbara Brecher, curator for the show, is excited about the prospect of having Del Ray Artisan members plus local and national bead artists represented in the gallery. Volunteers Michelle Reday Cook, Dick Wyvil and Marie Nierenberger donated considerable time to hanging the show. Many thanks to them. Also, a very special thank you to designer Brian Marquis for this wonderful April postcard design. In line with the springtime theme, two members

DRA is fortunate to be able to enjoy her floral talents at our show openings, as Royce provides us with colorful arrangements cleverly keyed to the exhibit themes. Del Ray artist, teacher and illustrator Alice Kale demonstrated painting flowers from life in watercolor. She discussed key factors such as brush strokes, color mixing, composition, background and cropping. She showed examples of unusual formats which can produce interesting works. There were also examples of her portrait and local scene work, including some from her illustrations for the annual Del Ray calendar sponsored by the Potomac West Business Association.
