Successful Spring Outdoor Art Sale

A beautiful Spring day contributed to the success of the second annual Outdoor Spring Art Sale, held May 7th.

Coordinator Rob Rudick reported that 23 Del Ray Artisans participated, exhibiting paintings, photographs, pottery, jewelry, textile and glass works of art to a steady stream of customers.  Final sales figures are yet to be totaled, but early indications are that sales grossed approximately 46,000 for the exhibitors!

Photographer Paige Ireland sold over $1,000 in photographic works.  Painters Dick Wyvill, Barbara Chiminello, and Michele Banks reported that several of their paintings have found new homes.

Artists reported enjoying the day and the sale was also successful in raising money for DRA.

Special thanks to Eve Stocker who comprised the one-person volunteer committee on Sale day.

July Generation exhibit

It's a three-family affair for the month of July when DRA brings Generation to the gallery.  The exhibit will feature the art of two generations of DRA's Dailey, Rando, and Sanabria families.

Generation is the brainchild of painter, sculptor and landscape architect Guy Rando.  He will curate (and show off) the talents of his three sons Marco (sculptor), Tony (mixed-media) and Gaetano (painter).  Marco hand carves wood using felled trees, and incorporates found objects into his sculptures.  Tony's diverse works include garden furnishings, sculptures and paintings.  Son Gaetano explores dramatic and romantic subjects in his acrylic paintings on canvas.

Patriarch Rando's work focuses on the unusual, often from a humorous perspective, incorporating variations on classical themes using an array of materials.

Bolivian painter Chela Velasquez De Sanabria says, "When I paint I forget about everything that concerns me, I am a dreamer, a bohemian soul."  Encouraged by matriarch De Sanabria, daughter Edith Graciela became a painter, a poet and a jewelry designer.

Ceramic sculptor Joseph Dailey explores the contrast between organic and architectural forms.  Says Dailey, "Life is about taking layers apart and putting layers together."  Son Joshua, is a printmaker.  His work often expresses awe, curiosity and grasping the infinite.

Generation is an "all in the family" experience which will highlight the similarity and the diversity of artistic talent within families.  The exhibit runs July 8-24 with an opening reception on Friday, July 8th, 7-10 PM.  A preview of the exhibit will be from 6-9:00 PM on First Thursday, July 7th.

Art Camp also in July

Be on the lookout for the postcard announcing this year's Art Camp which takes place July 25-29.  Linda Silk, Camp coordinator, has been hard at work lining up teachers for this annual week of creative classes for young artists ages 9-15.

If you haven't seen the really cool advertising piece, pick one up at the gallery or visit. delrayartisans.org and click the "Art Camp" link.

...and speaking of the DRA website...many, many thanks to Roy Wright for keeping the site fresh and up-to-date!

Student show report

Best show ever, best opening reception ever!  Wonderful turnout of students, parents and community leaders including Councilmen Rob Krupicka, Alexandria Sheriff's candidate Bill Cleveland, School Board members Molly Danforth and Ken Foran, and realtor Sean McEnearney, Alexandria Gazette photographer Louise Krafft conducted several interviews with the students.  Full page coverage of the show was in the following week's edition.  Although Mayor Euille could not attend, he sent "Congratulations to all of the participants who are a tribute to their families and the City as well."

Curator Linda Silk, spoke glowingly of Joe Dailey who assisted in hanging the show and was especially "wonderful" in lining up the judges-art faculty from Fairfax County Public Schools!

A plan has been made for some of the Alexandria schools (Minnie Howard and Jefferson School for the Arts) to bring students to the gallery on a field trip.  The teachers were jazzed by the idea!

Sharp-eyed people for Adopt-A-Park

This is a great way to earn time towards your 10 hour volunteer commitment as part of your DRA membership.  Contact Marlin Lord at 703.683.1112 or mglaia@aol.com to sign-up.
