August too hot?  Cool off at SPLASH!

Jump in, the art is cool!  Take the heat off and refresh your perspective by joining DRA artists Jen Chappell, Karen Schmitz and Susan Slattery at  SPLASH!  This 3-person exhibit will showcase a variety of work which will include photographs, monotypes and paintings-plus a few surprises.
SPLASH! opens August 5th with a reception from 7-10:00 PM at the DRA gallery.  A Preview exhibit will take place August 4th, First Thursday, from 6-9:00 PM.  During FIRST Thursday the Choreographers Collaborative Project will debut several summer-themed dance pieces in the gallery.  Performances will be at 7 PM and 7:45 PM, and are free to the public.

So, this August plan to jump in the cool pool with the artists of SPLASH!  The exhibit runs through Sunday, August 28.

Eichers Scholarship winner announced

Claire M. Schoen was chosen by the T.C. Williams Art Department faculty to receive this year's Ted Eichers Memorial Art Scholarship from the Del Ray Artisans.  Claire will attend Virginia Commonwealth University majoring in art.  Announcement of the award was made at the opening of DRA's annual Student Show on May 6th.

The Scholarship, in the amount of $600, was presented to Claire at the 19th Anniversary Awards Ceremony of the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria by Linda Silk, DRA Outreach Chair, at the T.C. Williams' auditorium on June 1st.

Claire joins five previous Eichers art scholarship winners: Dan Krahn (2000), Brian McCarthy (2001), Kimberley Burke (2002, Caroline Gullickson (2003) and Michaela Murphy (2004).

It's not the Waltons nor Archie Bunker

Three families of DRA artists will exhibit artwork exploring both their similarities and their diversities in the gallery's Generation exhibit.  The show runs July 8-24, and opens with a reception to be held Friday, July 8th, 7-10:00PM.

Curator Guy Rando and "his three sons", Marco, Tony and Gaetano, will fill the gallery with paintings, sculpture, furniture and mixed-media works.

Bolivian painter Chela Velasquez De Sanabria and daughter Edith Graciela will exhibit traditional paintings and jewelry.  Layered ceramics and prints will be displayed by ceramic sculptor Joseph Dailey and his printmaker son, Joshua.

A Preview exhibit will take place July 7th, First Thursday, 6-9:00 PM along with an Artist Talk from 7-8:00 PM.

This multi-family, multi-generation, multi-media show runs through Sunday, July 24, 2005

Board openings and newsletter editor

Wonderful opportunities have opened up for members who would like to get their hands dirty, feet wet or just have a taste.  And...Nooooo, we are not talking about making wine!

What we do have on the menu are several positions on the Board of Directors plus a spot for a monthly Well-Crafted Word editor.  These positions require only minimal work when all the responsibilities are broken down...plus there is fun, friendship and a chance to learn about the inner workings of a successful nonprofit.  And did we mention fun?

Find out how an art exhibit gets hung.  See how budgets for shows are crafted.  Bask in the results of your efforts returned to you in accolades from your peers.

Currently there are several opportunities available.  Come to the July Board of Directors meeting on Tuesday, July 12th, at 7:00 PM.  Meet the Board, listen to the discussions, then make your decision.  New members are welcome too!

We promise not to make you stomp the grapes.

Cardmaking party Sunday, August 7th

Cardmaking party Sunday, August 7thWell, it's about time!  Mark your calendar for another of DRA's most popular events-a gallery cardmaking party.  You've seen the cards and heard the stories-now join the fun.  Bring paint, stamps, scissors, glitter, old magazines, scraps of fabric, dried flowers and general ephemera to the gallery on August 7th.

Spend a creative and stress-free afternoon (noon-4:00 PM) handcrafting cards for DRA.  You might even learn some new techniques!  Non-members are welcome too.  For more info, contact Theresa Kulstad 703.283.0399 or tkulstad@verizon. net or to sign up to bring edible goodies to share.

Art Camp volunteers needed

DRA's annual Art Camp is almost upon us and Director Linda Silk still needs ten volunteers to assist instructors, manage activities, meals and children.  Contact Linda at 703.533.7689 or lmsilk@worldnet.att.net

Grant application update

Late word has just been received from the Alexandria Commission for the Arts.  The City of Alexandria has again voted to help with the funding of the Del Ray Artisans.

The Del Ray Artisans have been awarded a grant in the amount of $6,636.00 for Fiscal Year 2005-06.  We wish to thank the City and the Arts Commission for their generous support.

Exhibitors sought for Art on the Avenue's 10th Anniversary

Art on the Avenue, scheduled for Saturday, October 1st, is a multi-cultural arts, crafts and music festival that takes place along Mt. Vernon Avenue in Del Ray, between Bellefonte and Hume Avenues.

The popular festival runs 10 AM - 6 PM, rain or shine.  All artists, artisans and craftspeople are invited to apply to sell their handmade items (paintings, pottery, baskets, stained glass, jewelry, furniture, wearables, etc).  In 2005, over 30,00 visitors strolled down the Avenue purchasing arts and crafts from the 200+ artisans who took part.

As always, exhibit space is limited so submit your application now!!

And don't forget - Del Ray Artisan members receive a reduced fee ($95) to participate!

$95 / art student or Del Ray artisan
$125 / individual artist (non-DRA)
$150 / 2 artists sharing ($75 each)

To apply, submit a completed Art on the Avenue craft vendor application available at http://www.artontheavenue.org/exhibitors/craft.htm along with a check for a 10' x 10' booth space, payable to Art on the Avenue.

For more information contact crafters@artontheavenue.org or call 703.683.3100 .

Art on the Avenue-part 2

The Del Ray Artisans will have the gallery open during Art on the Avenue (10 AM-6 PM) again this year.  2005 saw a steady stream of people passing through the gallery during the day.

We will have our bi-annual Fall All Member Show on display and are planning additional activities to take place in the gallery.  The popular Choreographers Collaborative Project has already signed on again to present dance performances.  More good news is that portrait artist and DRA member Angela Maray has agreed to do "quick" sketches of children too!  We want to fill the schedule for the remainder of the day.

Thus far, the tentative schedule of activities is:

12 - 1:00 PM - Choreographers Collaborative Project performances
1 - 2:00 PM - Portrait artist Angela Maray will do "quick sketches" of children (ages 5-10 years old)
  2 - 3:00 PM - OPEN
  3 - 4:00 PM  OPEN

If you or someone you know would be interested in doing a demo or leading a hands-on art activity, step up or speak up!  The activity should involve interactive elements for children.  Contact Susan Slattery with your ideas, 703.922.7290 or summerh@erols.com .

Photographers and gardeners

Attention DRA photographers!  We need a few new pics of our award-winning gardenfor use on the DRA website.  If you can snap a few pictures and let Karen Schmitz know, it would be appreciated.  Her contact info is: schmityk@yahoo.com or 703.317.9340 .

Also, volunteers are needed to help with watering and pulling weeds.  Just imagine, you can become part of the team that won the City's Beautification award!  Contact Jane Deweerd at 703.548.2612

Sharp-eyed people for Adopt-A-Park

Last year, thanks to the efforts of several sharp-eyed volunteers who "policed" the grounds for unsightly trash, DRA earned over $900 from the City.  We still need volunteers.

This is a great way to earn time towards your 10 hour volunteer commitment as part of your DRA membership.  Contact Marlin Lord at 703.683.1112 or mglaia@aol.com to sign-up.

Member benefits

Stephany Wright, owner of Artifacts, Inc., located in Del Ray, is offering DRA members a 10% discount on complete framing jobs.  Please call 703.519.1711 for details.
