August too hot? Cool off at SPLASH!
Jump in, the art is cool! Take the heat off
and refresh your perspective by joining DRA artists Jen Chappell, Karen
Schmitz and Susan Slattery at SPLASH! This 3-person
exhibit will showcase a variety of work which will include photographs,
monotypes and paintings-plus a few surprises. So, this August plan to jump in the cool pool with the artists of SPLASH! The exhibit runs through Sunday, August 28. Eichers Scholarship winner announced Claire M. Schoen was chosen
by the T.C. Williams Art Department faculty to receive this year's Ted Eichers
Memorial Art Scholarship from the Del Ray Artisans. Claire will attend
Virginia Commonwealth University majoring in art. Announ The Scholarship, in the amount of $600, was presented to Claire at the 19th Anniversary Awards Ceremony of the Scholarship Fund of Alexandria by Linda Silk, DRA Outreach Chair, at the T.C. Williams' auditorium on June 1st. Claire joins five previous Eichers art scholarship winners: Dan Krahn (2000), Brian McCarthy (2001), Kimberley Burke (2002, Caroline Gullickson (2003) and Michaela Murphy (2004). 3 Art Camp scholarships available! DRA is thrilled to announce that there are three Art Camp 2005 scholarships available for young artists aged 9-15 years old! It's not the Waltons nor Archie Bunker Three families of DRA artists will exhibit artwork exploring both their similarities and their diversities in the gallery's Generation exhibit. The show runs July 8-24, and opens with a reception to be held Friday, July 8th, 7-10:00PM. Curator Guy Rando and "his three sons", Marco, Tony and Gaetano, will fill the gallery with paintings, sculpture, furniture and mixed-media works. Bolivian painter Chela Velasquez De Sanabria and daughter Edith Graciela will exhibit traditional paintings and jewelry. Layered ceramics and prints will be displayed by ceramic sculptor Joseph Dailey and his printmaker son, Joshua. A Preview exhibit will take place July 7th, First Thursday, 6-9:00 PM along with an Artist Talk from 7-8:00 PM. This multi-family, multi-generation, multi-media show runs through Sunday, July 24, 2005 Board openings and newsletter editor Wonderful opportunities have opened up for members who would like to get their hands dirty, feet wet or just have a taste. And...Nooooo, we are not talking about making wine! What we do have on the menu are several positions on the Board of Directors plus a spot for a monthly Well-Crafted Word editor. These positions require only minimal work when all the responsibilities are broken down...plus there is fun, friendship and a chance to learn about the inner workings of a successful nonprofit. DRA's annual Art Camp is almost upon us and Director Linda Silk still needs ten volunteers to assist instructors, manage activities, meals and children. The City of Alexandria has again voted to help with the funding of the Del Ray Artisans. The Del Ray Artisans have been awarded a grant in the amount of $6,636.00 for Fiscal Year 2005-06. We wish to thank the City and the Arts Commission for their generous support. Exhibitors sought for Art on the Avenue's 10th Anniversary Art on the Avenue, scheduled for
Saturday, October 1st, is a multi-cultural arts, crafts and music festival that
takes place along Mt. Vernon Avenue in Del Ray, The popular festival runs 10 AM - 6 PM, rain or shine. All artists, artisans and craftspeople are invited to apply to sell their handmade items (paintings, pottery, baskets, stained glass, jewelry, furniture, wearables, etc). In 2005, over 30,00 visitors strolled down the Avenue purchasing arts and crafts from the 200+ artisans who took part. As always, exhibit space is limited so submit your application now!! And don't forget - Del Ray Artisan members receive a reduced fee ($95) to participate! $95 / art student or Del Ray
artisan To apply, submit a completed Art on the Avenue craft vendor application available at http://www.artontheavenue.org/exhibitors/craft.htm along with a check for a 10' x 10' booth space, payable to Art on the Avenue. The Del Ray Artisans will have the gallery open during Art on the Avenue (10 AM-6 PM) again this year. 2005 saw a steady stream of people passing through the gallery during the day. We will have our bi-annual Fall All Member Show on display and are planning additional activities to take place in the gallery. The popular Choreographers Collaborative Project has already signed on again to present dance performances. More good news is that portrait artist and DRA member Angela Maray has agreed to do "quick" sketches of children too! We want to fill the schedule for the remainder of the day.
