Are you out there Art Camp kids?
Classes will be taught by 9 professional artists and internationally-known percussionist Tom Teasley. Teasley will present a hands-on percussion workshop and performance on Friday of Art Camp week which will be followed by the Art Camp kids’ exhibit. All this fun for $250 includes healthy lunches and swimming. Visit our website for a camp application or call Linda Silk 703.838.4827. Volunteers can have as much fun as the campers! This is an excellent way to fulfill your DRA volunteer hours and have a day of making art magic happen for future artists. To lend a hand July 24-28 (8:30 am–3:30 pm) and experience art-in-the-making, email Karen Schmitz schmityk@yahoo.com or call her at 703.317.9340. Shelley A. Marshall and DRA team again Once again, DRA will open the gallery to the Shelley A. Marshall Foundation (SAM) Arts Enrichment Program for one weekend in July. The program provides 12 promising high school art students with painting supplies and easels along with art instruction from a professional working artist at several area locations. Instruction at the DRA site will be provided by artist Mehran Rashidfarokhy of Alexandria. The SAM Foundation was established by Donn Marshall following his wife Shelley’s death at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Donn wanted to keep Shelley's memory alive as well as help further her dreams. The SAM Foundation has several other programs that have benefited recipients young and old. Visit ShellysFoundation.org Unread mail piling up? In an effort to counter ever-rising mailing costs, DRA is offering members the chance to “opt out” of receiving the monthly DRA newsletter via USPS. Kimonos, Canvas and Collage show
Wearable art will be wafting through the gallery in the form of hand-painted kimonos by Linda Silk. Silk is a graphic designer whose passion for art extends into several community projects involving children and the arts. The show will also feature oil paintings and collage pieces by Theresa Kulstad. Her paintings explore a variety of subject matter while her collage work is a more intuitive process. Opening reception is Friday, August 4 7-10:00 pm. For a preview, join them on First Thursday, August 3rd, 6-9PM.
Once again, bead artists from around the country will be represented in this juried show. Last year over 100 pieces were entered with 60 juried into the show. A nationwide call for entries will be sent to bead artists, bead publications and beading organizations. The entry form will be in the August issue of the DRA newsletter. The categories will remain the same as 2005: handmade beads, wearable bead art, and non-wearable bead art. There will be prizes for first place in each category. If you are interested in volunteering to help put this show together, or want more information please contact Barbara Brecher at barb@brecherdesign.com. Please put Bead-It! in the subject line. Pie in the sky or fool in the pool ?
Hot dogs and snacks will be on the menu, and of course, if you're lucky, a piece of prize-winning pie. Don’t forget - swimming starts at 6 pm! Families are welcome.
