2006 CALENDAR OF EVENTS

Are you out there Art Camp kids?

With just a few weeks to go, DRA's Multi- Cultural Art Odyssey Camp will be “the” creative hot spot for kids 9-15 years old. July 24-28, young artists will be painting, printmaking, beading, sewing, drumming and producing their very own works of art!

Classes will be taught by 9 professional artists and internationally-known percussionist Tom Teasley. Teasley will present a hands-on percussion workshop and performance on Friday of Art Camp week which will be followed by the Art Camp kids’ exhibit.

All this fun for $250 includes healthy lunches and swimming. Visit  our website for a camp application or call Linda Silk 703.838.4827.

Art camp volunteers needed

Volunteers can have as much fun as the campers! This is an excellent way to fulfill your DRA volunteer hours and have a day of making art magic happen for future artists. To lend a hand July 24-28 (8:30 am–3:30 pm) and experience art-in-the-making, email Karen Schmitz schmityk@yahoo.com or  call her at 703.317.9340.

Shelley A. Marshall and DRA team again

Once again, DRA will open the gallery to the Shelley A. Marshall Foundation (SAM) Arts Enrichment Program for one weekend in July.

The program provides 12 promising high school art students with painting supplies and easels along with art instruction from a professional working artist at several area locations. Instruction at the DRA site will be provided by artist Mehran Rashidfarokhy of Alexandria.

The SAM Foundation was established by Donn Marshall following his wife Shelley’s death at the Pentagon on September 11, 2001. Donn wanted to keep Shelley's memory alive as well as help further her dreams.

The SAM Foundation has several other programs that have benefited recipients young and old. Visit ShellysFoundation.org

Fall member Antics show

Goodbye Summer -- Hello Fall!

Board nominating committee

This year's annual DRA elections will take place in October. DRA has formed a Nomination Committee to marshal the process of preparing and submitting returning and potential Board members’ nominations to the General Membership at the annual election of officers. Members of the committee are President Susan Slattery, Secretary Linda Elliff, and Board chairs Karen Schmitz and Barbara Boehm.

If you are interested in learning more about being part of the action-packed arts community, DRA board positions or what creates the buzz about DRA in Alexandria, give one of our Nominating Committee members a shout. Please contact: Barbara Boehm barbxb@yahoo.com or Linda Elliff at llelliff@aol.com 703.360.1265

Silver art clay workshop

Join us Thursday and Friday, July 13th & 14th from 7-10 pm in an introduction to an exciting new medium. Art clay can be sculpted into infinite possibilities like any clay, but once this clay is fired, it becomes an actual silver piece. Our instructor, Dede Mandrell, will provide materials and the basics by starting us off with a small jewelry project. Each participant will have a completed piece to take home at the end of the class. The fee for the two night workshop is $185 for our DRA members and $205 for others. Please make reservations by contacting Theresa Kulstad 703.283.0399 or tkulstad@verizon.net.

Kimonos, Canvas and Collage show

And you didn't think that our Board members had any time for anything other than volunteering for DRA!!! Board members Linda Silk and Theresa Kulstad will exhibit their adventures in art August 4 - 27.

Wearable art will be wafting through the gallery in the form of hand-painted kimonos by Linda Silk. Silk is a graphic designer whose  passion for art extends into several community projects involving  children and the arts.

The show will also feature oil paintings and collage pieces by Theresa Kulstad. Her  paintings explore a variety of subject matter while her collage work is a more intuitive process.  Opening reception is Friday, August 4 7-10:00 pm. For a preview, join them on First Thursday, August 3rd, 6-9PM.

In-A-Gadda-Da-Bead-it !

Bead  it! is back to rock the gallery! Bead it! 2 will open on Friday, October 5, 2006 at 7:00PM.

Once again, bead artists from around the country will be represented in this juried show. Last year over 100 pieces were entered with 60 juried into the show. A nationwide call for entries will be sent to bead artists, bead publications and beading organizations. The entry form will be in the August issue of the DRA newsletter. The categories will remain the same as 2005: handmade beads, wearable bead art, and non-wearable bead art. There will be prizes for first place in each category.

If you are interested in volunteering to help put this show together, or want more information please contact Barbara Brecher at barb@brecherdesign.com. Please put Bead-It! in the subject line.

Pie in the sky or fool in the pool ?

No, it's just pie on the Avenue and time to cool in the pool! It's our second annual DRA Pie Baking contest at DRA’s annual Cookout and Pool party, Tuesday, August 15, at 6 PM. Any pie, made any way. Whether it's Grandma's signature recipe or your own secret creation, GO FOR IT! An entry form is included in this newsletter, ‘cause everyone wants a piece o' pie! Especially the judges!! Take a dip, have a sip and come be a part of what's happening at DRA, plus you might have a chance to be one of the judges!

Hot dogs and snacks will be on the menu, and of course, if you're lucky, a piece of prize-winning pie. Don’t forget - swimming starts at 6 pm! Families are welcome.

New junior DRA member

Courtney Brownewell, DRA Membership Chair, and her husband  signed up a new DRA family member, Trey Alexander, on Tuesday June 13th. His stats:  8lbs, 10oz, 20 inches, healthy, and super cute!

Young Trey joins his two brothers at the Brownewell hacienda. According to inside sources, “Courtney is feeling great and doesn't look at all like she has just had a baby!” Must be something about the water in Del Ray.
