THE CUSTOM FLORAL DESIGNER

One of DRA's treasured members is floral artist and small business  owner Royce Cohen. She is also one of our volunteers par excellence, contributing a fabulous arrangement for every exhibit opening. She  keys each design to the theme of the show. The designing aspect is the most satisfying and the easiest part of the job for her, she says.

She learned the flower business on her own talking with wholesalers and designers as she started her business in her home, moving to a warehouse and to a shop in Crystal City and selling flowers in the Old Town farmers' market before establishing her present charming site in a plum colored building on Mt. Vernon Ave. in 1997. She commissioned one of Chad Brady's first outdoor murals on a side wall and installed refrigerated storage behind her shop. Visitors there can enjoy her two friendly hounds, as well as an array of unusual flowers and accessories. Royce is a Vassar graduate and her previous careers included stints with the federal government and as a stock broker.

Royce loves all kinds of flowers, but especially favors the natural English garden effect and the European design approach. She particularly enjoys creating custom arrangements with large and unusual roses, lilies and orchids.  Many of those who attended DRA's Aloha Elvis seventieth birthday celebration commented on the stunning arrangement of huge peach roses and large lilies, embellished with a cascade of small purple orchids in a guitar lent by Acoustic Instruments.

Royce enjoys supporting the Artisans because of its grass roots community focused nature. She also provides flowers for a full schedule of other non-profits and worthy organizations. These include the Alexandria Commission on Women and the Northern Virginia AIDS Ministry. She receives many appeals for floral contributions from non-profit organizations, but is unable to consider further requests.  We are indeed fortunate to claim Royce as a creative member of the Artisans.
