100th Anniversary of the Town of Potomac

100th Anniversary of the Town of PotomacDel Ray is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Town of Potomac in 2008.

The community of Del Ray grew up around the railroad and could be considered one of the first commuting suburbs in the area. As the 19th century was ending, the new neighborhoods of Del Ray and St. Elmo were being planned north of the Alexandria city limits. The communities were laid out in grids of long blocks and served by a light railway that could take residents to Washington, D.C., in minutes.

When Potomac Yard opened in 1906, the population of greater Del Ray began to grow significantly. In 1908, Del Ray and St. Elmo formed the incorporated Town of Potomac, with its own mayor, council and police and fire service. The City of Alexandria annexed the Potomac in 1930 and the town ceased to exist. The Town of Potomac was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.

Del Ray Slideshow

In anticipation of the 100-year anniversary of Potomac’s founding in 2008, citizens and business people in Del Ray are now making plans to document and celebrate the community’s heritage. Del Ray residents Rebecca and Jim Snyder produced a narrated slideshow about Del Ray (see above), featuring many fascinating historical photos and images, thanks to neighbor Leland Ness.

The annual Del Ray Art on the Avenue festival show cases the work of more than 300 artisans and craftspeople. In this segment artists and residents talk about their culturally rich neighborhood.

A beautiful garden and impressive restored Victorian greenhouse in North Devon, south-west England. The family also run a B&B and garden tours. And I've been there to visit them! A must, if you are in England.

The website which inspired us to create www.mooseyscountrygarden.com.
The Inadvertent Gardener
In September 2005, Genie moved to Iowa City. In April 2006, she decided to overcome her black thumb heritage and plant some herbs in a couple of pots. Next thing she knew, she had a garden. It's amazing what she'll do for a good tomato.
Catgarden in Belgium
Lorre and Peter share their garden in Belgium and their cat family. I love visiting this garden, and looking at the photographs of those chubby-cheeked cats! Lorre is a fabulous writer, too - she makes everything in her world come alive on the page.
Chloes Garden
The musings of a gardener (called Chloe) in Victoria, Australia, as she attempts to reclaim her paradise from the weeds. Delightful - gardening with cockatoos sounds rather interesting!

A wide range of rare and unusual plants in a small private garden in Wales, UK, with an emphasis on wildlife and biodiversity.
Turning Earth
A great site from a small Yorkshire garden. Here is another gardener who loves cats and who also loves writing about the garden.

William Martin's Australian garden has received international reknown, for his artistic eye and also planting for a dry climate. Half way up Mt Noorat in Victoria, the garden has unique sculptures mixed in with native planting. Gorgeous photography too!
