The Mighty Mug

The Mighty Mug Workshop at The Clay Queen Pottery (Register Now)

Saturday, September 10 from 10am-4pm. In conjunction with the Fire and Earth exhibit, the juror Dan Finnegan is conducting a 1-day workshop, "The Mighty Mug," that will be hosted by The Clay Queen Pottery (2303 Mt Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22301). This demonstration workshop will explore a variety of forms suitable for 'beverage delivery systems' with a particular emphasis on pulling and attaching handles. Monday, September 12 from 2-4pm. Looking for a chance to get together with other creative people to discuss art and exchange ideas? Del Ray Artisans’ Personnel Committee is seeking to hire an Assistant Office Manager for the organization. This is a paid position on Thursdays and Fridays, 12-6 pm. Position entails greeting visitors and general office work with emphasis on organizational skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office required. Life Drawing - Open Sessions

  • Sunday, September 18 from 9:30-11:30am (Gesture)
  • Wednesday, September 21 from 2-5pm (Short/Long Pose)
  • Wednesday, September 21 from 6:30-9:30pm (Long Pose)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Help Submitting Artwork to the Local Flavor Exhibit

Monday, September 19 from 6-8pm and Thursday, September 22 from 12-2pm. The Local Flavor exhibit is using an online submission process. If you need some help with this electronic format, come to the gallery for some hands on assistance. Please try to establish your artwork titles, media, dimensions, and prices in advance. If you do not have an electronic image of the artwork you wish to submit, bring your artwork with you. We will show you how to take a cell phone picture and use that photo for the entry form. Call for Entry: Local Flavor Art Exhibit (Members Only)

Digital entries due: Thursday, September 22. When you’re not in town, what do you miss? What do you crave? Does your “local” have a taste or feel? Capture an experience, mood or vibe from your neck of the woods, and express this in a big way. Artists are encouraged to explore their minds and their daily life for inspiration for this exhibit. The curator is looking for art that is vibrant, engaging, warm, and welcoming. This is an all-member show, and the theme is meant to be fairly broad. Your Del Ray Artisans membership must be up-to-date. Artwork receiving for accepted exhibit artwork is on Sunday, October 2 and Monday, October 3 from 6-8pm. Show runs October 7-30, 2016. Art on the Avenue

Saturday, October 1 from 10-6pm. Art on the Avenue, a multicultural arts festival celebrating our community's diversity through the arts in Alexandria, Virginia. There will be entertainment for all ages, art activities, food and over 300 artists displaying and selling their work all along Mount Vernon Avenue. Fire and Earth National Ceramic Cup & Regional 2-D Art Exhibit

Runs through October 2. Fire and earth are two of the four elements. The Fire and Earth art exhibit celebrates these classical elements in a hybrid show combining a national ceramic cup exhibit with a regional 2-D show, exploring how fire transforms earth. The exhibit is juried by Dan Finnegan, an internationally recognized potter. Details: DelRayArtisans.org


Call for Entry: "Birdhouses of Del Ray" Silent Auction Fundraiser

Drop off October 2 and October 3 from 6-8pm. Looking for artists to design an artistic birdhouse for a Del Ray Artisans' fundraiser. Create your own birdhouse from the materials of your choice or purchase one of our wooden 'blanks' to decorate and embellish and to donate to DRA. Select a 'blank' birdhouse model of your choice ($3-10) at the gallery while supplies last. The Silent Auction will be open for bids October 7-25 during the Local Flavor show. Time-Sensitive Requests

  • Art on the Avenue: Volunteers needed Saturday, October 1
    Del Ray Artisans participates in the annual arts festival Art on the Avenue. We need volunteers: from 8:30am-10am to set up the DRA tent, artist demo tables/chairs, and create some colorful sidewalk chalk directional arrows to the gallery door; in shifts 10-12pm / 12-2pm / 2-4pm / 4-6pm to hand out DRA literature and help visitors with our Photo Op; and from 6-7pm to take down the tent, table and chairs.   • Nominating Committee Members
    This is a short-term position with a job to be completed by mid-September. The Nominating Committee puts together the slate of candidates for the 2017 Board of Directors.   • Adopt-a-Park: Pick Up Litter
    Del Ray Artisans volunteers pick up litter in Colasanto Park, which is a part of the City of Alexandria's Adopt-a-Park program. Inspections are on Mondays, so Sunday is the best pick-up day but not a hard rule. We need volunteers to sign up for weekends now through November 30. If you are interested in assisting, contact Marlin with your preferred weekend at AdoptAPark@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Web Posting Volunteers Needed
    Looking for an at-home way to earn volunteer hours? Help post exhibit and event information to the WETA and Eventful websites. The time commitment is usually minimal and can be done from your own computer anywhere! For more information contact Betsy at egmead@gmail.com

  • Curate/Coordinate an Exhibit outside the Gallery
    Del Ray Artisans’ Gallery Without Walls program is seeking volunteers to coordinate exhibits with specific venues. The program is flexible to incorporate your ideas and value your time. Contact Eileen at GWW@DelRayArtisans.org and Kathy at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Join the Curating Team!
    Volunteer to curate or assist a curator (hanging artwork, data entry / spreadsheets, distributing postcards, people skills). Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Kathy at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Help Curators design their Postcard
    Postcards contain the vital show information: show title, dates, reception information, any special events and other information the curators wish to highlight. Help curators put together this file for the printer. Must have access to software capable of creating printer-ready files (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and be able to email documents.   • Event Photography
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of Del Ray Artisans events for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Volunteer to photograph opening receptions, workshops, regular programs, or markets. We are hoping for around 10-20 photos from each event. Contact Sean at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Photographers Needed to Document Shows

    Seeking volunteers to process photos for our Flickr Photostream. Task involves cropping, downsizing, color correcting (if needed), and adding meta data (e.g. artist name, title, media, price, show). Must have Photoshop or comparable application. Contact Sean at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Seeking Videographer / Film Maker
    Seeking a volunteer to record a Del Ray Artisans workshop and edit for online viewing. Alternative option is to create an online course explaining an art or art-related activity. Contact John at VP@DelRayArtisans.org

The Arlington Arts Center’s annual Dia de los Muertos exhibition invites artists living in the Mid-Atlantic states to submit work that responds to the concepts, themes, and imagery of this beloved holiday. Call for Entry: Root to Bloom: Place Artists Call Home Exhibit at Principle Gallery

Digital Entries due September 28. Principle gallery invites entries of paintings that are of the featured artists’ place they call “home.” Washington DC artist, Teresa Oaxaca will be the juror. The artwork must be no larger than 40 inches along the longest edge. The exhibition will run in November 2016 in Alexandria, VA. Details: principlegallery.com/alexandria/call-entries-root-bloom
