Halloween Costume Party

Halloween Costume Party (Tomorrow Night)

Saturday, October 31 from 8pm-midnight. Attend in your finest costumery! The “Queen of the Ball” (curator) will award badges of honor to those in her favorite costumes. Mingle with monsters and witches; enjoy festive music, finger foods and (of course) candy. Skeletons: Exploring Under the Surface exhibit artwork is also available for purchase during the party and can go home with you that night! The 2016 Wall Calendar featuring artwork by talented Del Ray Artisans members is available for pre-order now at just $15/calendar. (Regular price $18/calendar.) Pre-populated events include Del Ray Artisans' programs, community events (from Del Ray Business Association, Del Ray Citizens Association, and Del Ray Artisans), national holidays, and major religious holidays. Skeletons: Exploring Under the Surface Art Exhibit (Last Weekend)

Runs through November 1. Artists explore what is under the surface—the framework, the under-structure. Come experience the artwork that digs deeper and discover what is 'under there', literally and figuratively. Details: TheDelRayArtisans.org


Under $100

Under $100: Affordable Masterpieces Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Friday, November 6 from 7-9pm. Artists showcase affordable artwork for $100 or less. This "cash and carry" exhibit is an opportunity for art patrons to collect and own a precious piece of art at a pocketbook-friendly price and take it with them at time of purchase. The gallery is closed on Thanksgiving day, but will be open the remainder of this final weekend of the exhibit. Please also join us for a special Black Friday shopping reception from 6-9pm on Friday, November 27 (the day after Thanksgiving). The show runs November 6-29, 2015. Details: TheDelRayArtisans.org

Partners in Art

Monday, November 9 from 2-4pm. Looking for a chance to get together with other creative people to discuss art and exchange ideas? Then come to a meeting of our cooperatively led Partners in Art group. This program is free of charge and open to all. Donations ($1–3) greatly appreciated. Life Drawing - Open Sessions

  • Wednesday, November 11 from 11am-1pm (Gesture)
  • Wednesday, November 11 from 2-5pm (Short/Long Pose)
  • Wednesday, November 18 from 6:30-9:30pm (Long Pose)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. SocialLights

Tuesday, November 17 from 7-9pm. Whether creating a collaborative piece, sharing ideas on current art events, or brainstorming for the next show, this informal program is designed to provide a positive and motivational environment for artists to network and share ideas. Art in City Hall 2015

Runs through December 18. Art in City Hall is a collaborative program of the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, the Office of the Arts, The Art League, Del Ray Artisans, and the Torpedo Factory Artists' Association. The exhibit is located in Alexandria City Hall (2nd floor, 300 King St, Alexandria, VA). Hours are Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm. Details at: TheDelRayArtisans.org/GWW


VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital Art Show

Runs through January 16. VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital at 2660 Duke Street has joined Del Ray Artisans' Gallery Without Walls family. On August 30 the curator hung the first show featuring art by Del Ray Artisans members selected from past shows. Artwork is displayed in the waiting areas and examination rooms. CALL FOR ENTRY

Del Ray Artisans’ 2016 Calendar (Members Only)

Digital entries due Friday, October 30 (TONIGHT by 11:59pm). Members: Submit your best work to the 3rd annual Del Ray Artisans' calendar! All entries are to be received digitally, so no physical pieces of art will be collected. There is no theme, no entry fee, and work previously shown at Del Ray Artisans gallery is completely acceptable. This calendar is a fundraiser to benefit Del Ray Artisans, but also a fun way to show your support for our arts organization and share your talent with the community. Around the Next Corner at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter (Members Only)

Digital entries due Sunday, January 17. Del Ray Artisans (DRA) invites member artists to submit 2D artworks expressing the theme "Around the Next Corner" to be displayed on the walls of the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria's (AWLA) Vola Lawson Animal Shelter from January 31 through May 15, 2016. This is a fundraising exhibit (40% donation split evenly between AWLA and DRA) through Del Ray Artisans' Gallery Without Walls program. Call for Entry at: TheDelRayArtisans.org/CFE


CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 12 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

Time-Sensitive Requests

  • Adopt-a-Park: Pick Up Litter
    Del Ray Artisans volunteers pick up litter in Colasanto Park, which is a part of the City of Alexandria's Adopt-a-Park program. Inspections are on Mondays, so Sunday is the best pick-up day but not a hard rule. We need volunteers to sign up for weekends now through November 30. If you are interested in assisting, contact Marlin with your preferred weekend at AdoptAPark@TheDelRayArtisans.org

Communications

  • eNews Co-Editor position open
    This weekly email filled with DRA news and local calls for entry doesn't write itself! Approx 2-hour commitment per issue; must either know Microsoft Word or HTML. Work with the current eNews Editor to divide up the weeks. Great way to "stay in the know" about local art opportunities. Contact Liz at eNews@TheDelRayArtisans.org
  • Edit and/or layout The Well-Crafted Word newsletter

    Post approved DRA publicity materials on a specific online calendar. Each volunteer will have one or two calendars to update; instructions will be given. Must have internet access. Contact Dawn at Technology@TheDelRayArtisans.org

Curating & Curator Support

  • Join the Curating Team!
    Volunteer to curate or assist a curator (hanging artwork, data entry / spreadsheets, distributing postcards, people skills). Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Kathy at Curating@TheDelRayArtisans.org
  • Help Curators design their Postcard
    Postcards contain the vital show information: show title, dates, reception information, any special events and other information the curators wish to highlight. Help curators put together this file for the printer. Must have access to software capable of creating printer-ready files (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and be able to email documents. Photography & Video

  • Event Photography
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of Del Ray Artisans events for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Volunteer to photograph opening receptions, workshops, regular programs, or markets. We are hoping for around 10-20 photos from each event. Contact Sean at Archives@TheDelRayArtisans.org
  • Photographers Needed to Document Shows
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of each piece of artwork in a show (as well as some overall gallery shots) for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Contact Sean at Archives@TheDelRayArtisans.org
  • Photograph Processing
    Seeking volunteers to process photos for our Flickr Photostream. Task involves cropping, downsizing, color correcting (if needed), and adding meta data (e.g. artist name, title, media, price, show). Must have Photoshop or comparable application. Contact Sean at Archives@TheDelRayArtisans.org
  • Seeking Videographer / Film Maker
    Seeking a volunteer to record a Del Ray Artisans workshop and edit for online viewing. Alternative option is to create an online course explaining an art or art-related activity. Contact John at VP@TheDelRayArtisans.org

Become an Art-O-Mat Artist!

Art-o-mat® machines, located throughout the United States, are retired cigarette vending machines that have been converted to vend individual, small-sized art. The machines provide a unique and inexpensive art source for beginning art collectors. There are about 400 contributing artists currently involved in the Art-o-mat® project and the company is always searching for fresh work. Call for Artist Vendors: Arlington Holiday Bazaar & Craft Fair

Artisans and crafters bring your best to the Arlington Career Center (816 Walter Reed Dr, Arlington VA 22204). Vendor registration is open, but space is limited! This free community event is on Saturday, December 12 from 10am-4pm. Vendor fees: Single Booth [8'x8'] $100 or Double Booth [16'x8'] $175; booths must be fully manned through the duration of the event. All vendors must provide own tables (tables available for rental fee of $15), backdrop and/or sides. Call for Artists: Public Art at Simpson Park

Deadline: November 8 at 11:59pm MDT. The City of Alexandria invites artists/artist teams to submit qualifications to be considered for a public art project as part of the Simpson Park Playground and Passive Space Renovation. The Selected Artist(s) will work with the Design Team to form a cohesive public art proposal that aligns with the overall renovation design of the site. The Artist’s role is to integrate public art into the concepts and oversee the fabrication and installation of the approved public art. Call for Entry: VIVID - Abstract Expressions

Entries due by November 30 at 11pm. An all-media, juried show open to all artists, at ArtSpace Falls Church. VIVID - bright - intense - brilliant. Interpretations for artists to translate in their chosen medium—juror is looking for bold and striking/saturated color treatments in wide-ranging styles.
