Nourish and Flourish

Nourish and Flourish: The Food Show Opening Reception

Friday, November 7 from 7-9pm. Art inspired by food—realistic or metaphorical, but worthy of tasting, savoring, and digesting. During this month of Thanksgiving, we express gratitude for the abundance in our own lives and encourage gallery visitors to make donations of non-perishable food to support the Capital Area Food Bank. Partners in Art

Monday, November 10 from 2-4pm. Looking for a chance to get together with other creative people to discuss art and exchange ideas? Then, come to a meeting of our cooperatively led Partners in Art group. This program is free of charge and open to all. Donations ($1–3) greatly appreciated. Life Drawing - Open Sessions

  • Wednesday, November 12 from 11-1pm (Gesture)
  • Wednesday, November 12 from 2-5pm (Short/Long Poses)
  • Thursday, November 13 from 6:30-9:30pm (Long Poses)
  • Wednesday, November 19 from 6:30-9:30pm (Long Poses)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Rescue Me

Rescue Me Art Exhibit at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter

Join us for the reception on Friday, November 14 from 7-9pm at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter (4101 Eisenhower Avenue, Alexandria VA). Del Ray Artisans and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria teamed up to present this animal-themed, fund-raising exhibit. Both nonprofit organizations receive a percentage of each sale. Tuesday, November 18 from 7-9pm. Whether creating a collaborative piece, sharing ideas on current art events, or brainstorming for the next show, this informal program is designed to provide a positive and motivational environment for artists to network and share ideas. Art and Story art exhibit at the Shirlington Library

Show runs through November 30 at the Shirlington Library (4200 Campbell Avenue, Arlington VA). Del Ray Artisans’ Gallery Without Walls program presents artworks illustrating the power of art and story, with a portion of each sale benefiting the Friends of Shirlington Library and Del Ray Artisans. Del Ray Artisans 19th Annual Holiday Market

The Holiday Market features handcrafted work from local artists; handmade ornaments to benefit Del Ray Artisans; plus a Bake Sale to benefit Alexandria Tutoring Consortium. Different artists are featured each weekend! The market is held the first three weekends in December: December 5-7, December 12-14, and December 19-21. Art in City Hall 2014-2015

Art in City Hall is a collaborative program of the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, the Office of the Arts, The Art League, Del Ray Artisans, and the Torpedo Factory Arts Center. The exhibit is located in Alexandria City Hall (2nd floor, 300 King St, Alexandria VA). Hours are Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm. The current exhibit runs through January 16, 2015. Del Ray Artisans' Cookbook Fundraiser (Call for Recipes & Artwork)

Deadline extended. Submit your digital entries ASAP. Inspired by the upcoming exhibit Nourish and Flourish: The Food Show (November 2014), Del Ray Artisans (DRA) is preparing a cookbook to sell during the holiday season and thereafter. Nourish and Flourish: The Food Show (DRA Members Only)

Receiving: Sunday, Nov 2 and Monday, Nov 3 from 6-8pm. Art inspired by food—realistic or metaphorical, but worthy of tasting, savoring, and digesting. We invite artists to create art that reflects the ways food influences us all, how we gather it, prepare it, and consume it, as we gather around the table. The Color Pink (DRA Members Only)

Receiving: Sunday, Dec 28 and Monday, Dec 29 from 6-8pm. Artists have used the color pink throughout the centuries to evoke purity, hope, seduction, romanticism, and many other emotions. What can YOU do with the color pink? Will you make something sweet or sassy... sublime or shocking? This show challenges Del Ray member artists to use any shade of pink as little or as much as they like to create an artistic statement and evoke one or more of the many emotions associated with pink. Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 12 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

Time-Sensitive Requests

  • Volunteers needed for the Halloween Ball on Friday, Oct 31
    Volunteers are needed to help manage the Halloween Ball in 1-hour time slots from 8-9pm, 9-10pm and 10-11pm. The greatest need is for help from 10-11pm.   • Help with artwork receiving on Sunday, Nov 2 or Monday, Nov 3 from 6-8pm
    Help the curators receive artwork submissions for the Nourish & Flourish art exhibit. Contact curators Cathy and John Messina at jncmessina@att.net
  • Adopt-a-Park: Pick Up Litter on Nov 22-23 or Nov 29-30
    Del Ray Artisans volunteers pick-up litter in Colasanto Park which a part of the City of Alexandria's Adopt-a-Park program. Inspections are on Mondays, so Sunday is the best pick-up day but not a hard rule. Thank you to everyone who helped make this season a success.   • Join the Board of Directors
    The 2015 Board of Directors begins serving on January 1st. We still have a few open Board Positions: Assistant Treasurer, Director of Communications, Director of Fundraising Events, and Director of Youth Programs. Archives/Documentation

  • Event Photography
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of Del Ray Artisans events for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Volunteer to photograph opening receptions, workshops, regular programs, or markets. We are hoping for around 10-20 photos from each event. Contact John at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Photographers Needed to Document Shows
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of each piece of artwork in a show (as well as some overall gallery shots) for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Contact John at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org

Communications

  • Post our Events on assigned Online Calendars
    Post approved DRA publicity materials on a specific online calendar. Each volunteer will have one or two calendars to update; instructions will be given. Must have internet access. Contact Dawn at Technology@DelRayArtisans.org

Curating & Curator Support

  • Join the Curating Team!
    Volunteer to curate or assist a curator (hanging artwork, data entry / spreadsheets, distributing postcards, people skills). Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Lesley at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Help Curators design their Postcard
    Postcards contain the vital show information: show title, dates, reception information, any special events and other information the curators wish to highlight. Help curators put together this file for the printer. Must have access to software capable of creating printer-ready files (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and be able to email documents. Helpful skills: creative design, content proofing. Contact Lesley at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org

Gallery and Grounds

  • Garden Clean Up
    Seeking volunteers to help with clean up and weeding of the gardens at the gallery. Contact Pamela at Gardens@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Misc Gallery Care Tasks
    Please let the Officer Manager know if you can help with occasional tasks on an as needed basis. Tasks could include doing laundry, sewing, or Low-key interior facilities tasks. For details, contact Tracy at Gallery@DelRayArtisans.org

Call for Artist Vendors: Arlington Holiday Bazaar & Craft Fair

Applications ongoing until slots full (approx 10 left). Artisans and crafters bring your best to the Arlington Career Center (816 Walter Reed Dr, Arlington VA 22204). This free community event is on Saturday, December 13th from 10am-4pm. Vendor fees: Single Booth [8'x8'] $100 or Double Booth [16'x8'] $175; booths must be fully manned through the duration of the event. All vendors must provide own tables - tables available for rental fee of $15, backdrop and/or sides. Pastel Workshop: “Citiscapes” by Alan Flattmann, hosted by Pastel Society of Virginia

The Pastel Society of Virginia is hosting New Orleans Master Pastelist Alan Flattmann, who is featuring Citiscapes. It is our annual Veteran's Day weekend workshop at Franconia Government Center in Alexandria November 7-10, Friday evening through Monday afternoon. Fee include 2014-2015 PSV membership, lunches, snacks, three days of instruction, and one evening of a meet and greet / book signing. VMFA Visual Arts Fellowships 2015-16

Application deadline: Friday, November 7, 2014. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is now accepting applications for 2015-16 Visual Arts Fellowships. VMFA is committed to supporting professional artists as well as art and art history students who demonstrate exceptional creative ability in their chosen discipline. Award amount include: $8000 Professional artists, $6000 Graduate students in the visual arts or art history, and $4000 Undergraduate students in the visual arts (including college-bound high school seniors).
