Hand Tool Basics, a free program for DRA members
THIS TUESDAY, September 23 from 7:30-9pm. Join us for an instructional program by wood conservator and member Ron Blank as he discusses and explains the basic use and selection of hand tools and small electric tools. Tools for sawing, drilling, shaping, and sculpting wood will be compared and contrasted with similar tools for metals. This will provide great information for artists, whether you desire to incorporate wood in your mixed media piece or if you have a personal project to complete. The program is only open to DRA members and is free, but registration is requested online at: DelRayArtisans.org/Tools

Speed Dating at the Gallery
THIS WEDNESDAY, September 24 from 8-10pm. Join us for an evening of awesome art viewing and fun conversations! The evening will start at 8pm with viewing art from the Put a Bird on It show, mingling and conversation over light refreshments. Only $10 per person. Put a Bird on It! Art Exhibit
Embellishment can be art. Artists in all media were challenged to repurpose everyday objects or artworks to transform them into soaring new works, each incorporating a 'bird'. Show runs through September 28. Details at: DelRayArtisans.org

Metamorphosis! Opening Reception
Friday, October 3 from 7-9pm.
Metamorphosis is a juried art exhibit featuring work by local artists demonstrating how change can be positive, negative, frightening, or enlightening; metaphorical or physical.
The exhibit also includes the Mask-erpiece Silent Auction—artful, wearable masks created by artists. The silent auction runs from October 3-18.
The show runs from October 3 through November 2.

Art on the Avenue
Saturday, October 4, 10am-6pm. Come experience Art on the Avenue, a multi-cultural arts festival celebrating our community's diversity through the arts. There will be entertainment for all ages, art activities, food and over 300 artists displaying and selling their work all along Mount Vernon Avenue. Life Drawing - Open Sessions

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Alexandria Art Market
Saturday, October 11 from 10am-4pm; Live Music 12-2pm by Snakehead Run! This is the last market of the 5th season of Del Ray Artisans' outdoor art market. Shop from a variety of original artwork from local artists—including, but not limited to, painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, and glasswork. The market is held on the 2nd Saturday of the month (May-October) in Colasanto Park, adjoining Del Ray Artisans gallery (2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria VA). All Creatures Great and Small Art Exhibit at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter
Show runs through October 26 at the shelter. Del Ray Artisans and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria present our first animal-themed art exhibit on the walls of the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter (4101 Eisenhower Ave, Alexandria VA). Shelter hours for adoption and viewing are: Monday-Thursday 12-7pm, Friday closed, and Saturday-Sunday 12-5pm. Proceeds from the exhibit support the artist, Del Ray Artisans, and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria. DelRayArtisans.org/AWLA

Three Artists, Three Visions Art Exhibit at Prudential PenFed Realty
Show runs through October 31 at Prudential PenFed Realty. Del Ray Artisans and Prudential PenFed Realty present the artwork of Wendy Band, Sharon Frey, and Linda Lowery in the small group show: "Three Artists, Three Visions". Del Ray Artisans' Cookbook Fundraiser (Call for Recipes & Artwork)
Digital entries due by Friday, Sept 26 at 11pm. Inspired by the upcoming exhibit Nourish and Flourish: The Food Show (November 2014), Del Ray Artisans (DRA) is preparing a cookbook to sell during the holiday season and thereafter. Gallery Without Walls Exhibit at Shirlington Public Library
Digital entries due by Saturday, Sept 27. Del Ray Artisans (DRA) Gallery Without Walls program will have an 8-week (October-November 2014) show at the Shirlington branch of the Arlington Public Library (4200 Campbell Ave, Arlington VA). DRA is looking for artwork for this interesting and busy venue! Only DRA members are eligible and the Curating Committee will select up to three works of art from each artist. Metamorphosis
Receiving: Sunday, Sept 28 and Monday, Sept 29 from 6-8pm. Metamorphosis implies a distinct transformative change from one form to another. Change can be positive, negative, frightening, or enlightening. Consider physical changes such as a caterpillar's metamorphosis into a butterfly; philosophical changes such as a Christian embracing Buddhism or a liberal switching over to the conservative party; or personal life changes such as marriage, divorce, addiction and rehabilitation. Morph a Mask!
Calling all artists for help in a FUNdraiser for Del Ray Artisans! Purchase a blank mask ($3 each or 2 for $5) at Del Ray Artisans gallery ASAP, and create a unique wearable mask-erpiece. Drop off your mask creations during artwork receiving for the Metamorphosis show: Sunday, Sept 28 and Monday, Sept 29 from 6-8pm. These artful masks will be sold at a silent auction between October 3rd and October 18th. This is a fundraiser and 100% of the proceeds from the sale of these masks will be used to support Del Ray Artisans, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Alexandria Art Market
Applications accepted through the final market on October 11. Join Del Ray Artisans in its 5th season of monthly outdoor art markets on the lawn area of the gallery. These markets give artists an opportunity to sell their original handmade artwork and provide them with consistent exposure to the community. One market remains this season on the 2nd Saturday of the month (October 11) from 10am to 4pm, rain or shine. Rescue Me at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter

The Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) and Del Ray Artisans (DRA) invite artists to submit 2D artworks expressing the theme "Rescue Me" to be displayed on the walls of the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter for 3 months (November 14-January 25, 2015). This is a fundraising exhibit (40% donation split evenly between AWLA and DRA) through Del Ray Artisans' Gallery Without Walls program. Call for Entry at:

Time-Sensitive Requests
- Demo your artwork during Art on the Avenue (Saturday, Oct 4)
Seeking members to become part of the Art on the Avenue experience through Del Ray Artisans. Requesting volunteers to demo how they create their artwork for 1-3 hours between 10am-6pm. Great exposure to the community! To volunteer send your preferred time of day, length of shift, and media you'll demonstrate to Gale at Volunteers@DelRayArtisans.org
- Help organize the artist demonstrations during Art on the Avenue (Saturday, Oct 4)
Seeking 2+ coordinators to lead set-up (approx 8:30am) and take-down (approx 6pm) of the Del Ray Artisans tents for Art on the Avenue and to help artists as they set up for their demonstrations throughout the day (10am-6pm). - Join the Board of Directors

Seeking volunteers to take photos of Del Ray Artisans events for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Volunteer to photograph opening receptions, workshops, regular programs, or markets. We are hoping for around 10-20 photos from each event. Contact John at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org
- Photographers Needed to Document Shows

Communications
- Post our Events on assigned Online Calendars
Post approved DRA publicity materials on a specific online calendar. Each volunteer will have one or two calendars to update; instructions will be given. Must have internet access. Contact Dawn at Technology@DelRayArtisans.org
Curating & Curator Support
- Join the Curating Team!
Volunteer to curate or assist a curator (hanging artwork, data entry / spreadsheets, distributing postcards, people skills). Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Lesley at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org
- Help Curators design their Postcard
Postcards contain the vital show information: show title, dates, reception information, any special events and other information the curators wish to highlight. Help curators put together this file for the printer. Must have access to software capable of creating printer-ready files (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and be able to email documents. Gallery and Grounds
- Adopt-a-Park: Pick Up Litter
Del Ray Artisans volunteers pick-up litter in Colasanto Park every weekend from March through November as a part of the City of Alexandria's Adopt-a-Park program. Inspections are on Mondays, so Sunday is the best pick-up day but not a hard rule. If you are interested in assisting, contact Marlin with your preferred weekend(s) at AdoptAPark@DelRayArtisans.org
- Garden Clean Up
Seeking volunteers to help with clean up and weeding of the gardens at the gallery. Contact Pamela at Gardens@DelRayArtisans.org
- Misc Gallery Care Tasks

Are you available on an occasional Thursday or Friday? Artist Opportunity: 2016 Solo Shows at The Art League
Application Deadline: September 26 at 6pm. The Art League seeks artists who have a strong, cohesive, and exciting body of work expressing an aesthetic concept for our prestigious solo artist exhibitions. Interested artists should attend one of the informational sessions on the following dates: Friday, August 15, 1pm; Thursday, August 28, 6:30pm; or Saturday, September 13, 10:30am. Call for Artists: Art on the Avenue
Event Date: Saturday, October 4. Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists and is known for high quality artwork. All work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. Showcase your most recent and best work, and list materials and retail prices on the back of each photo. Standard booth rate is $195 ($180 for Del Ray Artisans members or students). The first round of judging is the first week in June. From June through the end of September any remaining spaces are filled by the judges as applications are received. Pastel Workshop: “Citiscapes” by Alan Flattmann, hosted by Pastel Society of Virginia

The Pastel Society of Virginia is hosting New Orleans Master Pastelist Alan Flattmann, who is featuring Citiscapes. It is our annual Veteran's Day weekend workshop at Franconia Government Center in Alexandria November 7-10, Friday evening through Monday afternoon.
