Alexandria Art Market

Saturday, July 12 from 10am-4pm; Live Music 12-2pm by the Back Alley Blues Boys! Del Ray Artisans' 5th season art market features a variety of original artwork for sale from local artists—including, but not limited to, painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, and glasswork. The market is held on the 2nd Saturday of the month (May-October) from 10am-4pm in Colasanto Park, adjoining Del Ray Artisans gallery (2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria VA). Art in City Hall: Intersections of Art and History

Show runs through July 18. Art in City Hall is a collaborative program of the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, the Office of the Arts, The Art League, Del Ray Artisans, and the Torpedo Factory Arts Center. The current exhibit is called "Intersections of Art and History" and is located in Alexandria City Hall (2nd floor, 300 King St, Alexandria VA). Hours are Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm. Board and Beyond Art Exhibit

Opening Reception: Friday, August 1, 7-9pm. At Del Ray Artisans gallery, the month of August is traditionally dedicated to showcasing the artwork of our Board members. This year the Board has invited three incredible volunteers who go "above and beyond" to join selected Board members in the "Board" showcase. “Board and Beyond” features the artwork of John Hiller, Lesley Hall, Stacy Rausch, Eileen O'Brien, Pamela Underhill, Liz Martinez, and Gale Goldfarb. Their styles are unique expressions of individuals committed to their pursuit of lives as artists. Show runs August 1-31. DelRayArtisans.org/shows


First Thursday

Thursday, August 7 from 6-9pm. First Thursday is a Del Ray community event sponsored by the Del Ray Business Association from 6-9pm along Mount Vernon Avenue. The gallery stays open until 9pm tonight.


All Creatures Great and Small Art Exhibit at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter

Reception: Friday, August 8, 7-9pm. Del Ray Artisans and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria present our first animal-themed art exhibit on the walls of the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter (4101 Eisenhower Ave, Alexandria VA). Join us for the reception on Friday, August 8 from 7-9pm. Shelter hours for adoption and viewing are: Monday-Thursday 12-7pm, Friday closed, and Saturday-Sunday 12-5pm. Drop off donations of blankets and towels at the animal shelter year-round or at Del Ray Artisans gallery during this exhibit. Show runs August 3 through October 26 at the shelter. Put a Bird on it! Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Friday, September 5, 7-9pm. Embellishment can be art. “Put a Bird on It!” juried art exhibit opens Friday, September 5 (opening reception 7-9pm) at Del Ray Artisans gallery. Artists in all media were challenged to repurpose everyday objects or artworks to transform them into soaring new works, each incorporating a ‘bird’. Show runs September 5-28. “Make a Bird of it!” Workshop

Saturday, September 6, 9am-1pm. The “Make a Bird of It!” mixed-media sculpture workshop with artist Laura Hummel is on Saturday, September 6, 9am-1pm. Spend a morning repurposing new or vintage metals and other found objects to create a unique bird sculpture. Various cold connection techniques will be taught. Age 18+. CALL FOR ENTRY

All Creatures Great and Small at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter

Digital submissions due: Friday, July 18. This exhibit is in partnership with the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (AWLA) and will be displayed on the walls of the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter for three months. Del Ray Artisans members are invited to submit 2D artworks with the subject matter of animals and art with animal-related themes, and may submit animal-themed art that was previously shown at Del Ray Artisans (DRA) gallery. Put a Bird on It!

Receiving: Sunday, August 31 and Monday, September 1 from 6-8pm. Prove that embellishment can be art. Channel your inner Duchamp, your inner Jasper Johns, your inner Bird! Embellish everyday objects, recycled items, or even your own artwork, to transform them into new soaring pieces. But, you must remain true to the theme: all artwork must incorporate a 'bird', either thematically or literally. Artists may submit up to 3 pieces of art for the show and 6 pieces for the marketplace. Jurors are Laura Perritt and Mikeual Perritt. Download the Call for Entry: DelRayArtisans.org/shows/calls/


Alexandria Art Market

Application due ASAP (accepted throughout the season). Join Del Ray Artisans in its 5th season of monthly outdoor art markets on the lawn area of the gallery. These markets give artists an opportunity to sell their original handmade artwork and provide them with consistent exposure to the community. Four markets remain in the season on the 2nd Saturday of the month (July through October) from 10am to 4pm, rain or shine. Sign up for space at one or more of the market dates. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 12 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

Time-Sensitive Requests

  • Volunteers to help with Grown-Ups Art Camp
    Help take down (July 11), be an instructor’s assistant, or check in workshop participants. If you're available day or night, anytime between June 30 and July 11, please contact Tracy at GUAC@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Yard Sale Helpers
    Give 2 or more hours to help organize, price and tag donations on Sunday, July 6 (2-6pm), Thursday, July 10 (1-8pm) and Friday, July 11 (1-8pm). Also needed are helpers during the INDOOR Yard Sale itself on Saturday, July 12 in 3-hour shifts (7am-3pm). Please contact Gale at Volunteers@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Outreach Volunteers Needed
    On Saturday, July 12 during the Alexandria Art Market volunteer artists are needed to man a “Make-It-Take-It” tent. The artist can pick the project (should cost about a $1 per visitor). Think small and walk-awayable. Lots of supplies already at the gallery, and reimbursement forms are available from Kim at outreach@DelRayArtisans.org. The project will be free to participants.
  • Opening Reception Help
    The Board and Beyond Opening Reception on August 1st is in need of greeters, food runners, and bartenders. If you can help please contact Gale at Volunteers@DelRayArtisans.org.

Archives/Documentation

  • Event Photography
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of Del Ray Artisans events for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Volunteer to photograph opening receptions, workshops, regular programs, or markets. We are hoping for around 10-20 photos from each event. Contact John at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Photographers Needed to Document Shows
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of each piece of artwork in a show (as well as some overall gallery shots) for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Contact John at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org.

Communications

  • Seeking Newsletter Editor
    Seeking an editor for The Well-Crafted Word newsletter August issue. Editor collects and edits articles and sends to the layout designer; then proofs the newsletter draft and sends to Board members for approval. If you are interested or have questions, contact Dawn at Technology@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Post our Events on assigned Online Calendars
    Post approved DRA publicity materials on a specific online calendar. Each volunteer will have one or two calendars to update; instructions will be given. Must have internet access. Contact Dawn at Technology@DelRayArtisans.org.

Curating & Curator Support

  • Join the Curating Team!
    Volunteer to curate or assist a curator (hanging artwork, data entry / spreadsheets, distributing postcards, people skills). Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Lesley at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Help Curators write their Call for Entry
    A Call for Entry consist of a description of the art exhibit vision (audience: artists), Entry Details, Accepted Artist Requirements & Fine Print, Entry Form, and important dates. Help curators put together this document. Must have access to Microsoft Word and be able to email documents. Helpful skills: creative writing, content editing, MS Word formatting. Contact Lesley at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Help Curators write their Communications Packet
    A Communications Packet consists of a Press Release, 35-word blurb, and 75-word blurb explaining the exhibit (audience: the public). Help curators put together this packet for media consumption. Must have access to Microsoft Word and be able to email documents. Helpful skills: creative writing, content editing, MS Word formatting. Contact Lesley at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Help Curators design their Postcard
    Postcards contain the vital show information: show title, dates, reception information, any special events and other information the curators wish to highlight. Help curators put together this file for the printer. Must have access to software capable of creating printer-ready files (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and be able to email documents. Helpful skills: creative design, content proofing. Contact Lesley at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org.

Fundraising

  • Adopt-a-Park: Pick Up Litter
    Del Ray Artisans volunteers pick-up litter in Colasanto Park every weekend from March through November as a part of the City of Alexandria's Adopt-a-Park program. Inspections are on Mondays, so Sunday is the best pick-up day but not a hard rule. If you are interested in assisting, contact Marlin with your preferred weekend(s) at AdoptAPark@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Seeking coordinator for our 2015 Wall Calendar
    Past curators select the artwork to showcase in the calendar. The volunteer calendar coordinator collects all the digital files and arranges them in a calendar using on online tool. Contact Dawn at Technology@DelRayArtisans.org.

Gallery and Grounds

  • Garden Clean Up
    Seeking volunteers to help with clean up and weeding of the gardens at the gallery. Contact Pamela at Gardens@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Misc Gallery Care Tasks
    Please let the Officer Manager know if you can help with the occasional laundry, sewing cloth, or helping with banner hanging/takedown on an as needed basis. For details, contact Tracy at Gallery@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Office Administrative Help
    Are you available on an occasional Thursday or Friday? The Office Manager needs extra hands to help with prepping materials for notebooks (cutting paper and punching holes), prepping materials for shredding, and other office-related activities. OTHER REGIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ARTISTS

Illustration needed for Del Ray's First Thursday

Respond by July 11; Artwork due by July 18. Volunteer your time and talent and create an illustration following the theme "Playdate in Del Ray" for the [August 7] First Thursday community event. Part of the event program will include a 3x5" "ticket" that participants will take from station to station throughout the event, then turned in for raffle prizes. The illustration would be used on this ticket. The artwork can be new or work you previously finished. Gallery Underground announces juried solo or group exhibition opportunities for artists from the Greater Washington, DC area for the Special Exhibitions space. Paint Herndon "Art on the Lawn" Call for Vendors

Paint Herndon Call for Artists, Performers, and Art Educators RFP

Call for Artists: Art on the Avenue on October 4

Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists and is known for high quality artwork. All work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. Showcase your most recent and best work, and list materials and retail prices on the back of each photo. Standard booth rate is $195 ($180 for Del Ray Artisans members or students). The first round of judging is the first week in June. From June through the end of September any remaining spaces are filled by the judges as applications are received. For questions about the jury process or the show, email artontheavenue@gmail.com.
