Craft Night Social

THIS UPCOMING WEDNESDAY, February 26 from 6-9pm. Bring in your own projects in progress and spend a few hours of uninterrupted time crafting. Meet other creative, like-minded individuals as well. Open to knit / crochet / fiber arts, paper crafts / scrapbooking / stamping / card-making, sewing, jewelry, drawing, and general crafts. No wet media other than glue please. Each person will receive 2-3 feet of table space. This 3-hour session is FREE (donations appreciated), but register in advance to reserve your space. Del-Ray-geous art exhibit at Prudential PenFed Realty

Del Ray Artisans is pleased to present Del-Ray-geous art exhibit at Prudential PenFed Realty as a part of our Gallery Without Walls program. This all-member exhibit features artwork about Del Ray and community—focused on the outrageous, fun, exciting, and unique aspects. The exhibit is open to the public Monday through Friday, 9am to 5pm, at Prudential PenFed Realty (300 N Washington St, Alexandria) and runs through Friday, February 28. Reincarnations Art Exhibit

Show runs through March 2. Visit the gallery to experience Reincarnations, an exhibit of art created from salvaged discards. Artists find form and design in items that would otherwise be thrown out and headed for the landfills. Featured within this show will be select Artcyclopedias, altered books from a set of encyclopedias that were about to be discarded. Details at: DelRayArtisans.org

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Portraits of Pop Culture Opening Reception

Friday, March 7 from 7-10pm. Pop culture is so pervasive in our society that it distracts public's focus from the important issues that shape our world. The cartoonish celebrities that drive pop culture run from the profound to the profane. Artists have used famous people as their subjects from before da Vinci to after Warhol. What will our portraits of pop icons reveal? Do they fascinate or irritate? Curators Zade Ramsey and Gordon Frank highlight artists' most compelling cartoons, lampoons and caricatures of celebrities, politicians, and other pop figures. Show runs March 7-30. Featuring the Heads Up Silent Auction: Del Ray Artisans members used their artistry and imagination to transform dress form heads from mannequins to works of art. These wild and crazy sculptures will be for sale by silent auction during the Portraits of Pop Culture art exhibit. Proceeds go to support Del Ray Artisans exhibits.

Partners in Art

Partners in Art is a group of artists that meets regularly to share goals, report on progress, obtain feedback on current artwork, and discuss topics of interest to the group. Become a regular or drop-in with artwork if you are looking for feedback. By Women, About Women Gallery Without Walls (GWW)

Submissions due: February 28. Drop-off of accepted work: March 5. In honor of Women's History month, the next "Gallery Without Walls" exhibit at the Prudential PenFed Realty Old Town Alexandria office will be the Living Legends of Alexandria, featuring photographic portraits of women who have made a positive, tangible difference to the quality of life in Alexandria. Women (who are Del Ray Artisans members) are invited to submit 2D artworks to accompany this exhibit. These artworks should feature women, women's themes, and be "by women, about women," but not strict portraiture. Only 10 to 15 artworks will be selected for display. Receiving: Monday, March 3 and Tuesday, March 4, 2014 from 5-8pm. Popular culture is so pervasive in our society that it distracts the public's focus from the important issues that shape our world. This exhibit portrays and comments on our culture through its portraits of popular figures. Let your artworks reflect your point of view about our contemporary culture and its icons, good and bad. Call for Artist Vendors: Alexandria Art Market

Application Deadline: Monday, April 14. Join Del Ray Artisans in its 5th season of monthly outdoor art markets on the lawn area of the gallery. These markets give artists an opportunity to sell their original handmade artwork and provide them with consistent exposure to the community. There will be six monthly markets on the 2nd Saturday of the month (May through October) from 10am to 4pm, rain or shine. Sign up for space at one or more of the market dates. Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 12 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

• URGENT: Photographers Needed to Document Shows
  Seeking volunteer(s) to take photos of each piece of artwork in a show (as well as some overall gallery shots) for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Must be completed before the show comes down. We have a volunteer covering the current show; help needed for the next show. Contact Rusty at Volunteers@DelRayArtisans.org.
• Office Help
  The Office Manager needs help getting office-related things done on Thursdays and Fridays between 12-6pm. Tasks may include basic typing, labeling envelopes, shredding papers, organizing files, comparing lists, organizing things in closets (no heaving lifting). Would love to have a few people commit to 1-2 hours/month for consistent help (e.g. every 3rd Friday or every 2nd Thurs). Contact Tracy at Gallery@DelRayArtisans.org to help.
• Event Photography
  Seeking volunteers to take photos of Del Ray Artisans events for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Volunteer to photograph opening receptions, workshops, regular programs, or markets. We are hoping for around 10-20 photos from each event. Contact Rusty at Volunteers@DelRayArtisans.org.
• Join Our Curator Support Team
  Volunteer to assist a curator (hanging artwork, data entry / spreadsheets, people skills). Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Rusty at Volunteers@DelRayArtisans.org.
• Curator Support: Help Curators write their Call for Entry
  A Call for Entry consist of a description of the art exhibit vision (audience: artists), Entry Details, Accepted Artist Requirements & Find Print, Entry Form, and important dates. Help curators put together this document. Must have access to Microsoft Word and be able to email documents. Helpful skills: creative writing, content editing, MS Word formatting. • Curator Support: Help Curators write their Communications Packet
  A Communications Packet consist of a Press Release, 35-word blurb, and 75-word blurb explaining the exhibit (audience: the public). Help curators put together this packet for media consumption. Call for Entry: Coming Together presented by Old Mill Contemporary

Applications Due: March 5, 2014. Old Mill Contemporary Gallery and Studios will be hosting its first juried exhibition: Coming Together, an open call for artistic works from the DC Metro area (DC, MD, VA) exploring any theme. TFA Young Artists Fellowship

Applications due by March 28, 2014. The Touchstone Foundation for the Arts (TFA) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to educational and charitable purposes. Candidates for the Fellowship program must be artists between ages 18-29 living in the DC area who are prepared to commit to a 2-year fellowship that includes full membership in the Touchstone Gallery and a solo exhibition. Call for Entry: Mayhem at Gallery Underground in Crystal City

Online entry deadline: March 31 at midnight. Art about chaos, disorder, and confusion. Juried by Mark Cameron Boyd. All media accepted. $500 in cash awards. Fee $35 for up to two entries (digital entries only). Exhibit runs April 29 - May 30, 2014. Opening reception May 2.
