Del-Ray-geous Art Exhibit Opening Reception (Tonight!)

Friday, October 4, 7-10pm. The Del-Ray-geous art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans showcases member artwork focused on the outrageous, fun, and unique parts of the Del Ray neighborhood and community. Show runs October 4-27, 2013. Closing Reception with awards: Sunday, October 27, 3-6pm. Events during this exhibit include Art on the Avenue, Life Drawing Sessions, Decorative Pillow Sewing Workshop, Craft Night Social, and more. For details, visit: www.TheDelRayArtisans.org.

Art on the Avenue

Saturday, October 5, 10am-6pm. On Mount Vernon Avenue from 10am to 6pm, you'll find: Art on the Avenue, a multi-cultural arts festival celebrating our community's diversity through the arts. There will be entertainment for all ages, art activities, food and over 300 artists displaying and selling their work all along Mount Vernon Avenue. Stop by the gallery to view artist demonstrations. Pop-Up Sewing Workshop

Pop-Up Sewing: Decorative Pillow Workshop

Sunday, October 13, 11:30am-1:30pm. If you've ever thought about learning how to sew (but didn't know how start)—and would like to add a personal touch to your decorating—this event is for you. Professional seamstress Chrystal Cooper will teach you how to use a sewing machine to make a decorative pillow to take home—and have fun doing it. There is no need to bring supplies, everything you need will be provided. Instructor: Chris Cooper. Cost: $30 (includes supplies). Register in advance at calendar.TheDelRayArtisans.org

Looking for support in reaching your art-related goals? Partners in Art is a group of artists that meets regularly to share goals, report on progress, obtain feedback on current artwork, and discuss topics of interest to the group. Become a regular or drop-in with artwork if you are looking for feedback. Life Drawing - Open Sessions

  • Wednesday, October 9 from 11am-1pm (gesture)
  • Wednesday, October 9 from 2-5pm (short/long pose)
  • Wednesday, October 16 from 6:30-9:30pm (long pose)
  • Sunday, October 20 from 9:30am-11:30am (gesture)
  • Wednesday, October 23 from 2-5pm (short/long pose)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Annual Member Meeting with Board Elections

Sunday, October 20, 5-7pm. Join fellow members for the latest Del Ray Artisans news, pizza, and the election of next year's Board members. If you are interested in running for a Board position or have questions, contact the Nominating Committee (Tessa Barsic, Rusty Lynn, and Kathy Turner) at Nominations@TheDelRayArtisans.org. Even if you are not considering running for office, we still need your help to elect the new Board. Those attending will also be the first to witness the unveiling of our 2014 shows! Craft Night Social

Tuesday, October 22 from 6-9pm. Bring in your own projects in progress and spend a few hours of uninterrupted time crafting. Meet other creative like-minded individuals as well. Open to knit / crochet / fiber arts, paper crafts / scrapbooking / stamping / card-making, sewing, jewelry, drawing, and general crafts. No wet media other than glue please. Each person will receive 2-3 feet of table space. Each 3-hour session is $8 for DRA members and $10 for non-members. Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 12 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

  • Demo your artwork during Art on the Avenue (Saturday, Oct. 5)
    Seeking members to become part of the Art on the Avenue experience through Del Ray Artisans. Requesting volunteers to demo how they create their artwork for 1-3 hours. Great exposure to the community! To volunteer or request more information, contact Lesley Hall at Volunteers@TheDelRayArtisans.org.
  • Help with the Children's Art Activity during Art on the Avenue (Saturday, Oct. 5)
    Seeking members to help direct children in an art activity inside the gallery during Art on the Avenue. To volunteer or request more information, contact Lesley Hall at Volunteers@TheDelRayArtisans.org.
  • Event Photography
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of Del Ray Artisans events for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Volunteer to photograph opening receptions, workshops, regular programs, or markets. We are hoping for around 10-20 photos from each event. Contact Lesley at Volunteers@TheDelRayArtisans.org.
  • Adopt-A-Park
    Trash needs to be picked up from the small park and from around the gallery. About 1-1 1/2 hours of work on weekends through November 30. Contact Marlin G. Lord at Facilities@TheDelRayArtisans.org or 703-508-7471 with your availability.
  • Join Our Curator Support Team
    Volunteer to assist a curator in October or November; offer your particular skill (hanging, spreadsheets, design) to a curator who needs it; or apply for the position of Director of Curating! Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Lesley at Volunteers@TheDelRayArtisans.org.
  • Reach Out for DRA!
    DRA is forming several small groups of volunteers to help coordinate our participation in community events. Sign up today for the: First Thursday Committee (May-Sep), Art on the Avenue Committee (October 5th event), or Community Requests Committee (ad hoc). Contact Amber at Outreach@TheDelRayArtisans.org.
  • Help document and shape DRA's Privacy Policy
    As we have grown in this technological era, new privacy concerns are popping up with regards to sharing personal contact information, photography at events, security cameras, and more. The Board is seeking members to help formulate and document a comprehensive privacy policy. Suggested policy revisions will be presented to the Board and the membership for final approval.   • Help with the Gallery Garden
    Dig, weed, and learn other skills by professional landscape designer and artist, Pamela Underhill. No experience necessary. Meet weekdays or weekends for an hour or more.   • Develop new features using PHP or SQL for the DRA Web Site

Call for Entry: Celebrate The Season Of Art!

Artwork submissions due by email by Friday, October 4, 2013. You are cordially invited to submit your artwork for a City of Fairfax Spotlight Celebration. Artists from Northern Virginia are invited to compete with a variety of honors that will be awarded by the City of Fairfax. The public will be invited to a reception of the judged art exhibition on Friday, November 15 from 7-9pm. We will have two categories with 10 awards (including 6 cash awards from $25 - $100 each). One award category will be for all paintings, drawings, serigraphs, lithographs and multi-media. The second award category will be for fine art photography. VMFA Visual Arts Fellowships 2014-15

Application deadline: Friday, November 8, 2013. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is now accepting applications for 2014-15 Visual Arts Fellowships. VMFA is committed to supporting professional artists as well as art and art history students who demonstrate exceptional creative ability in their chosen discipline. Award amount include: $8000 Professional artists, $6000 Graduate students in the visual arts or art history, and $4000 Undergraduate students in the visual arts (including college-bound high school seniors).
