Swing Dance Lesson (Tonight!)

One Percent Art Exhibit

Although inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby regarding the wealthy 1%, artists were asked to share the 1% in THEIR world, whether symbolic, political, physical, etc. Events include card-making party, resin workshop, and a dance lesson. Del-Ray-geous Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Friday, October 4, 7-10pm. The Del-Ray-geous art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans showcases member artwork focused on the outrageous, fun, and unique parts of the Del Ray neighborhood and community. Show runs October 4-27, 2013. Closing Reception with awards: Sunday, October 27, 3-6pm. Art on the Avenue

Saturday, October 5, 10am-6pm. On Mount Vernon Avenue from 10am to 6pm, you'll find: Art on the Avenue, a multi-cultural arts festival celebrating our community’s diversity through the arts. There will be entertainment for all ages, art activities, food and over 300 artists displaying and selling their work all along Mount Vernon Avenue. These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Partners in Art is a group of artists that meets regularly to share goals, report on progress, obtain feedback on current artwork, and discuss topics of interest to the group. Pop-Up Sewing: Decorative Pillow Workshop

Sunday, October 13, 11:30am-1:30pm. If you've ever thought about learning how to sew (but didn't know how start)—and would like to add a personal touch to your decorating—this event is for you. Professional seamstress Chrystal Cooper will teach you how to use a sewing machine to make a decorative pillow to take home—and have fun doing it. Annual Member Meeting with Board Elections

Sunday, October 20, 5-7pm. Join fellow members for the latest Del Ray Artisans news, pizza, and the election of next year's Board members. Craft Night Social

Tuesday, October 22 from 6-9pm. Bring in your own projects in progress and spend a few hours of uninterrupted time crafting. Meet other creative like-minded individuals as well. Open to knit / crochet / fiber arts, paper crafts / scrapbooking / stamping / card-making, sewing, jewelry, drawing, and general crafts. No wet media other than glue please. Each person will receive 2-3 feet of table space. Each 3-hour session is $8 for DRA members and $10 for non-members. DEL RAY ARTISANS' CALL FOR ENTRY

Call for Entry: Del-Ray-geous all-member show

Receiving: Sunday, Sept 29 and Monday, Sept 30 from 6-8pm. Del Ray (home of Del Ray Artisans) is a neighborhood, but it’s more than just a place—it’s a creative community. Whether you’ve lived here for years or if you just fell in love with it, we want you express what Del Ray means to you. Don’t be afraid to let your creativity be outrageous. Make it Del-Ray-geous! Focus your 2D or 3D artwork on some specific aspect of Del Ray or on community in general. Also consider entering shrink-wrapped 2D artwork or fine handcraft artisans work into the “Art-to-Go” market. This show is open to DRA members only (but you can join today!). CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 12 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

  • Seeking Raffle Prizes
    Donate services or goods to be raffle prizes to help support the October All Member show: Del-Ray-geous. A few ideas include: spa services, personal training, computer help, pet sitting, personal chef, gift certificates, etc. As a raffle prize donor you will be thanked in the Del Ray Artisans newsletter and on a poster posted at the gallery for the duration of the exhibition (October 4-27).   • Demo your artwork during Art on the Avenue (Saturday, Oct. 5)
    Seeking members to become part of the Art on the Avenue experience through Del Ray Artisans. Requesting volunteers to demo how they create their artwork for 1-3 hours.   • Help with the Children's Art Activity during Art on the Avenue (Saturday, Oct. 5)

  • Event Photography
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of Del Ray Artisans events for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Volunteer to photograph opening receptions, workshops, regular programs, or markets. We are hoping for around 10-20 photos from each event. Contact Lesley at Volunteers@TheDelRayArtisans.org.
  • Adopt-A-Park
    Trash needs to be picked up from the small park and from around the gallery. About 1-1 1/2 hours of work on weekends through November 30. Contact Marlin G. Lord at Facilities@TheDelRayArtisans.org or 703-508-7471 with your availability.
  • Post DRA Events on assigned Online Calendars
    Post approved DRA publicity materials on online calendars assigned to you. Each volunteer will have one or two web calendars to update. Must have internet access and will take approximately 30 minutes each time (usually twice per month). DRA members only. Contact Dawn at Technology@TheDelRayArtisans.org.
  • Join Our Curator Support Team
    Volunteer to assist a curator in September, October, or November; offer your particular skill (hanging, spreadsheets, design) to a curator who needs it; or apply for the position of Director of Curating! Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Lesley at Volunteers@TheDelRayArtisans.org.
  • Reach Out for DRA!
    DRA is forming several small groups of volunteers to help coordinate our participation in community events. Sign up today for the: First Thursday Committee (May-Sep), Art on the Avenue Committee (October 5th event), or Community Requests Committee (ad hoc). Contact Amber at Outreach@TheDelRayArtisans.org.
  • Help document and shape DRA's Privacy Policy
    As we have grown in this technological era, new privacy concerns are popping up with regards to sharing personal contact information, photography at events, security cameras, and more. The Board is seeking members to help formulate and document a comprehensive privacy policy. Suggested policy revisions will be presented to the Board and the membership for final approval.   • Help with the Gallery Garden
    Dig, weed, and learn other skills by professional landscape designer and artist, Pamela Underhill. No experience necessary. Meet weekdays or weekends for an hour or more.   • Develop new features using PHP or SQL for the DRA Web Site

Grant Opportunity: William H. Johnson Prize

Deadline: September 23, 2013. The William H. Johnson Foundation for the Arts is a nonprofit, tax-exempt organization that seeks to encourage African American artists early in their careers by offering financial grants. The Johnson Foundation awards grants to individuals who work in the following media: painting, photography, sculpture, printmaking, installation and/or new genre. Call for Entry: Celebrate The Season Of Art!

Artwork submissions due by email by Friday, October 1, 2013. You are cordially invited to submit your artwork for a City of Fairfax Spotlight Celebration. Artists from Northern Virginia are invited to compete with a variety of honors that will be awarded by the City of Fairfax. The public will be invited to a reception of the judged art exhibition on Friday, November 15 from 7-9pm. We will have two categories with 10 awards (including 6 cash awards from $25 - $100 each). One award category will be for all paintings, drawings, serigraphs, lithographs and multi-media. The second award category will be for fine art photography. Workshop: Creating and Painting with Custom Handmade Brushes with Glenn Grishkoff

Register by Wednesday, October 2. Workshop: Saturday October 5 and Sunday October 6. Learn how to make gorgeous handmade brushes that are works of art and functional tools. This course is open to all levels with in-depth step- by- step instruction of beginning and advanced brush making and painting techniques. In addition to brush making Grishkoff will present multiple demonstrations on how handmade brushes can be used to create dynamic one of a kind marks on a variety of surfaces. VMFA Visual Arts Fellowships 2014-15

Application deadline: Friday, November 8, 2013. Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (VMFA) is now accepting applications for 2014-15 Visual Arts Fellowships. VMFA is committed to supporting professional artists as well as art and art history students who demonstrate exceptional creative ability in their chosen discipline. Award amount include: $8000 Professional artists, $6000 Graduate students in the visual arts or art history, and $4000 Undergraduate students in the visual arts (including college-bound high school seniors).
