One Percent Art Exhibit Opening Reception (Tonight!)

Friday, September 6, 7-10pm. Although inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby regarding the wealthy 1%, artists were asked to share the 1% in THEIR world, whether symbolic, political, physical, etc. Events include card-making party, resin workshop, and a dance lesson. Playing with Resin Workshop

Thursday, September 12, 7-10pm. Learn how to use resin in your artwork. Come "play" with resin in a safe environment and learn the ins and outs of mixing resin and using it—as an adhesive, a covering, or the main medium. Instructor: Tracy Wilkerson. Card-Making Party

Card-Making Party back by popular demand!

Sunday, September 15, 3-6pm. Help DRA refresh and re-stock our hand-made greeting cards. Hosted by favorites, Karen and Theresa, participants will have plenty of materials to create one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted cards that will be available for purchase at the gallery. Join us while we create, clip and collage these little masterpieces. No experience necessary. Free, but a suggested donation for materials and time used is appreciated. Open to all over 12 years old. Bring a small amount of your favorite materials to share as well as a light snack. The sale of these cards will benefit the Del Ray Artisans Gallery. RSVP to Theresa at tkulstad@verizon.net.

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Swing Dance Lesson

Call for Entry: Del-Ray-geous all-member show

Receiving: Sunday, Sept 29 and Monday, Sept 30 from 6-8pm. Del Ray (home of Del Ray Artisans) is a neighborhood, but it’s more than just a place—it’s a creative community. Whether you’ve lived here for years or if you just fell in love with it, we want you express what Del Ray means to you. Don’t be afraid to let your creativity be outrageous. Make it Del-Ray-geous! Focus your 2D or 3D artwork on some specific aspect of Del Ray or on community in general. Also consider entering shrink-wrapped 2D artwork or fine handcraft artisans work into the “Art-to-Go” market. This show is open to DRA members only (but you can join today!). CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 10 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

  • Event Photography
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of Del Ray Artisans events for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Volunteer to photograph opening receptions, workshops, regular programs, or markets. We are hoping for around 10-20 photos from each event. Contact Lesley at Volunteers@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Adopt-A-Park
    Trash needs to be picked up from the small park and from around the gallery. About 1-1 1/2 hours of work on weekends through November 30. Contact Marlin G. Lord at Facilities@DelRayArtisans.org or 703-508-7471 with your availability.
  • Post DRA Events on assigned Online Calendars
    Post approved DRA publicity materials on online calendars assigned to you. Each volunteer will have one or two web calendars to update. Must have internet access and will take approximately 30 minutes each time (usually twice per month). DRA members only. Contact Dawn at Technology@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Join Our Curator Support Team
    Volunteer to assist a curator in September, October, or November; offer your particular skill (hanging, spreadsheets, design) to a curator who needs it; or apply for the position of Director of Curating! Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Lesley at Volunteers@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Reach Out for DRA!
    DRA is forming several small groups of volunteers to help coordinate our participation in community events. Sign up today for the: First Thursday Committee (May-Sep), Art on the Avenue Committee (October 5th event), or Community Requests Committee (ad hoc). Contact Amber at Outreach@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Help document and shape DRA's Privacy Policy
    As we have grown in this technological era, new privacy concerns are popping up with regards to sharing personal contact information, photography at events, security cameras, and more. The Board is seeking members to help formulate and document a comprehensive privacy policy. Suggested policy revisions will be presented to the Board and the membership for final approval.   • Help with the Gallery Garden
    Dig, weed, and learn other skills by professional landscape designer and artist, Pamela Underhill. No experience necessary. Meet weekdays or weekends for an hour or more.   • Develop new features using PHP or SQL for the DRA Web Site

Del Ray neighborhood logo and slogan

The Del Ray Business Association (DRBA) is looking for an artist / designer to come up with a community logo and slogan for the neighborhood of Del Ray in Alexandria, Virginia. This logo and slogan will be used for Marketing and Advertisement for years to come. What image comes to mind when you think of Del Ray? Now is the time to share that idea. Call for Entry: Young at Art, Juried Artists Exhibition for Artists 55+

Artwork Receiving: Thursday, September 12, 10am-Noon. Artists 55 years of age or older are invited to participate in the 27th annual Young At Art show to open on September 17, 2013 and run through January 22, 2014 at the Durant Arts Center (1605 Cameron St, Alexandria). Jointly sponsored by: Senior Services of Alexandria and Goodwin House Foundation. The juror will be Chris Haggerty, a Fine Arts Professor at Marymount University. Call for Entry: Recycled Art Exhibition

Deadline: September 13, 2013. Northern Virginia Community College is seeking submissions of recycled art for an exhibit publicizing sustainability, reducing, & recycling. Submissions may be sculptural (both free-standing or wall hangings) or 2D, but must be composed of a minimum of 75% recycled materials. Entry is open to any Virginia, Maryland, and/or D.C. residents. Workshop: Make Your Own "House of Memories" Journal Book

Register by September 9; Workshop on September 14, 10am to 4pm. Join DJ Gaskin for her next recycled-materials house book workshop -- "House of Memories" -- and make a pocket journal. Learn how to create the house-shaped book out of recycled materials then, using simple origami folds, junk-mail envelopes and more, embed envelopes and pockets within hand-stitched pages. Call for Entry: Celebrate The Season Of Art!

Artists from Northern Virginia are invited to compete with a variety of honors that will be awarded by the City of Fairfax. The public will be invited to a reception of the judged art exhibition on Friday, November 15 from 7-9pm. We will have two categories with 10 awards (including 6 cash awards from $25 - $100 each). One award category will be for all paintings, drawings, serigraphs, lithographs and multi-media. The second award category will be for fine art photography.
