First Thrusday

First Thursday: Open Late (Tonight)

Thursday, August 8, 12-9pm. The gallery will be open until 9pm on Del Ray's First Thursday (rescheduled to August 8th due to the weather). Between 6pm and 9pm at the corner of Mount Vernon and Oxford Avenues, the Del Ray Business Association (DRBA) is collecting art supplies, new and used books, and gently used children's clothing for the Mount Vernon Community School. The DRBA is also hosting a "Did You Know" scavenger hunt—make sure you find the answer to Del Ray Artisans' question! Details at: calendar.DelRayArtisans.org


Sidewalk Sale

Art Supplies at the Sidewalk Sale (This Weekend)

August 10-11 (9am-5pm Saturday and 11am-5pm Sunday). We have a truckload of new and used art supply goodies for the sale: paints, canvases, artist tools, crafting supplies, and more. Part of the 4th Annual Alexandria Sidewalk Sale to support shopping locally. Come support Del Ray Artisans and pick up some great supplies!


Pie Contest

Member Meeting/ Cook–Out/ Pie–Baking Contest

Sunday, August 18 from 5-7pm. Mingle with fellow artists and art-supporting members, enjoy the summer cook-out, and learn about what's planned for DRA. Bring a sweet or savory pie to participate in the Pie-Baking Contest. After the judging all are welcome to sample the delicious submissions! Volunteers are needed to set up, clean up, and grill. Craft Night Social

Craft Night Social

Tuesday, August 27 from 6-9pm. Bring in your own projects in progress and spend a few hours of uninterrupted time crafting. Meet other creative like-minded individuals as well. Open to knit / crochet / fiber arts, paper crafts / scrapbooking / stamping / card-making, sewing, jewelry, drawing, and general crafts. No wet media other than glue please. Each person will receive 2-3 feet of table space. Each 3-hour session is $8 for DRA members and $10 for non-members. Register at: DelRayArtisans.org/craft


Anything Goes

Anything Goes Art Exhibit

Del Ray Artisans Board of Directors presents Anything Goes, an exhibit showcasing artwork by seven members of the Board: Michele Reday Cook, Susan Amber Gordon, Lesley Hall, John W. Hiller, Nora Partlow, Betty Plummer, and Stacy Rausch. The show runs through September 1.

Life Drawing - Open Sessions

  • Wednesday, August 14 from 6:30-9:30pm (long pose)
  • Sunday, August 18 from 9:30-11:30am (gesture - clothed)
  • Wednesday, August 21 from 2-5pm (short/long pose)
  • Wednesday, August 28 from 6:30-9:30pm (long pose)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Partners in Art

Monday, August 19 from 2-4pm. Looking for support in reaching your art-related goals? Partners in Art is a group of artists that meets regularly to share goals, report on progress, obtain feedback on current artwork, and discuss topics of interest to the group. Become a regular or drop-in with artwork if you are looking for feedback. One Percent Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Friday, September 6, 7-10pm. Although inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel The Great Gatsby regarding the wealthy 1%, artists were asked to share the 1% in THEIR world, whether symbolic, political, physical, etc. Events include card-making party, resin workshop, and a dance lesson. The Last Alexandria Art Market of 2013

Saturday, September 7 from 10am-4pm. Don't miss the last Alexandria Art Market of 2013 held on the green space at our gallery! A variety of original artwork from over 25 artists will be on display including painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, and glasswork. Live music by Mean Mary from 12-2pm. Boat Painting!

Saturday, September 7 from 10am-4pm. Our latest community outreach is with the Alexandria Seaport Foundation (ASF). During the Alexandria Art Market on September 7th, we'll be "arting up" a 6 foot scaled reproduction Bevin Skiff built by the foundation. The fully completed boat will make its debut at Alexandria's Seaport Day on September 28th! The boat will be auctioned off for the benefit of ASF and DRA.


Playing with Resin Workshop

Thursday, September 12, 7-10pm. Learn how to use resin in your artwork. Come "play" with resin in a safe environment and learn the ins and outs of mixing resin and using it—as an adhesive, a covering, or the main medium. Instructor: Tracy Wilkerson. Card Making Party back by popular demand!

Sunday, September 15, 3-6pm. Help DRA refresh and re-stock our hand-made greeting cards. Hosted by favorites, Karen and Theresa, participants will have plenty of materials to create one-of-a-kind, hand-crafted cards that will be available for purchase at the gallery. Join us while we create, clip and collage these little masterpieces. No experience necessary. Free, but a suggested donation for materials and time used is appreciated. Open to all over 12 years old. Bring a small amount of your favorite materials to share as well as a light snack. The sale of these cards will benefit the Del Ray Artisans Gallery. RSVP to Theresa at tkulstad@verizon.net.


DEL RAY ARTISANS' CALL FOR ENTRY

Call for Proposals: 6' Boat Design/Painting

Deadline: Friday, August 9, 2013. The Alexandria Seaport Foundation (ASF) is building a 6-foot scale reproduction of their "Bevin Skiff," and DRA is soliciting proposals to paint it artistically. Decorative schemes may include lighting or sculptural additions. Model construction will be either wood or a wooden frame covered in canvas. Del Ray Dozen Invitational Photography Show

The Del Ray Dozen Invitational Photography Show is a juried show. DRA member photographers are invited to prepare a portfolio with examples of their work to present to the jury in a portfolio review. Reviews are being scheduled for August 21st, so get your portfolio together and email Rob Rudick at robrudick@yahoo.com to schedule your review. Photographers who are accepted will decide which of their recent work they wish to display and will be given a space in the gallery. Show dates: November 1-December 1, 2013.


Fine Art & Fine Craft Holiday Market 2013

Application Deadline: Monday, August 26, 2013. Interested in selling your fine art & fine craft treasures at DRA's Holiday Market in December? We will continue this year with 3 weekends and will offer booth space as well as wall space. Gallery space is limited and the variety of goods available at each Market weekend will be kept in balance, so get your applications in early! Exhibitor opportunities open to all; Del Ray Artisans members receive priority and a discount. Please read everything and follow all the directions. Call for Entry: One Percent

Receiving: Sunday, Sept 1 and Monday, Sept 2 from 6:30-8:30pm. Although inspired by F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby regarding the wealthy 1%, this all-area artist, all-media show concept is about defining and depicting the 1% of anything you choose in a representational, abstract, or symbolic form in any media (2D/3D). One percent might be related to something overlooked or unnoticed, natural resources, indigenous cultures, achievement of happiness, a grain of sand or a drop of water etc. What is the 1% that inspires you? CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 10 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

  • August show Anything Goes, our annual Board Showcase
    Seven hard working board members would love help from Del Ray Artisans members in putting on a fantastic show for the month of August. Help us keep the gallery open during this show (August 3-September 2). We need your help in filling all the shifts! Sign-up now for an available gallery hosting slot, which counts toward your required hours. Contact Lesley Hall at Volunteers@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Art Supplies Sidewalk Sale on August 10-11 (THIS WEEKEND)
    Volunteers needed to help organize, set-up, sell goodies, and take-down the sidewalk sale. Volunteer for 2-3 hours or more, and get first look at the great art supplies for sale! Saturday, August 10 shifts start at 7:45am; Sunday, August 11 shifts start at 9:45am. Contact Lesley Hall at Volunteers@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Adopt-A-Park
    Trash needs to be picked up from the small park and from around the gallery. About 1-1 1/2 hours of work on weekends through November 30. Contact Marlin G. Lord at Facilities@DelRayArtisans.org or 703-508-7471 with your availability.
  • Post DRA Events on assigned Online Calendars
    Post approved DRA publicity materials on online calendars assigned to you. Each volunteer will have one or two web calendars to update. Must have internet access and will take approximately 30 minutes each time (usually twice per month). DRA members only. Contact Dawn at Technology@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Join Our Curator Support Team
    Volunteer to assist a curator in September, October, or November; offer your particular skill (hanging, spreadsheets, design) to a curator who needs it; or apply for the position of Director of Curating! Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Lesley Hall at Volunteers@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Reach Out for DRA!
    DRA is forming several small groups of volunteers to help coordinate our participation in community events. Sign up today for the: First Thursday Committee (May-Sep), Art on the Avenue Committee (October 5th event), or Community Requests Committee (ad hoc).   • Help document and shape DRA's Privacy Policy
    As we have grown in this technological era, new privacy concerns are popping up with regards to sharing personal contact information, photography at events, security cameras, and more. The Board is seeking members to help formulate and document a comprehensive privacy policy. Suggested policy revisions will be presented to the Board and the membership for final approval.   • Help with the Gallery Garden
    Dig, weed, and learn other skills by professional landscape designer and artist, Pamela Underhill. No experience necessary. Meet weekdays or weekends for an hour or more.   • Develop new features using PHP or SQL for the DRA Web Site

Del Ray neighborhood logo and slogan

The Del Ray Business Association (DRBA) is looking for an artist / designer to come up with a community logo and slogan for the neighborhood of Del Ray in Alexandria, Virginia. This logo and slogan will be used for Marketing and Advertisement for years to come. What image comes to mind when you think of Del Ray? Now is the time to share that idea.
