Music In Art exhibit (Last weekend!)

Artwork influenced by a particular tune, song, movement or aria. Can you name that tune by the brush strokes in the painting, gems in the necklace, weave in fiber art, or see the movement in clay sculpture? Quick Draw Creative

Sunday, July 7, 7-9pm. Using basic drawing techniques, grown-ups get out of their routines with quick, creative drawing exercises. The instructor is a professional illustrator who will teach you: Techniques with lineworks; How to break down detailed drawing processes with simple techniques; and How to resolve creative road blocks. Creative Cut-Ups

2-Day Workshop: July 8 and July 9 from 3-7pm. Collage is a wonderful medium to ignite creativity in first-time artists, and for seasoned artists to spark or restart their engines. Come make hand-painted papers and use them in creating original works of art. The instructor will provide a supplies list to all participants. Instructor: Millie Mateu. Cost: $80 + supplies. Tiny Landscape Mandala

Wednesday, July 10, 10-12pm. Using observation of the natural world, in miniature, you can see a drama unfold and use these tiny landscapes in Nature Journaling. Learn how to use a nature journal to enhance observation and create a page in a Nature Journal by looking at the natural world at ants' level. Instructor: Margaret Wohler. Cost: $30 + $12 supplies. Tapestry Weaving

2-Day Workshop: July 10 and July 11 from 3:30-9:30pm. Learn basic and intermediate Gobelin tapestry weaving techniques, creating a miniature woven tapestry on a small frame loom. This class will cover warping the loom, basic techniques, color mixing and hatching, finishing and various design shaping techniques. Each student will work on individual small tapestries and will be able to exhibit the sampler they completed during the class. The instructor will work closely with students in class and provide individual guidance and demonstrations. Instructor: Tea Okropiridze. Cost: $160 + $30 supplies. Register: DelRayArtisans.org/GUAC

Friday, July 12, 9-12:30pm. This workshop is for non-artists and beginners. Pop-Up Sewing: Tote Bag

Friday, July 12, 7:30-9:30pm. If you've ever thought about learning how to sew (but didn't know how start) this event is for you. Professional seamstress Chrystal Cooper will teach you how to use a sewing machine to make an environment friendly tote bag to take home—and have fun doing it. Summer Art Camp for Kids

Artists Through the Ages - a week of art exploration through art history, historic time periods and themes, and influential artists

Choose July 15-19 or July 22-26.
There is still space available to register your child for DRA's summer art camp. This year we are offering two separate weeks of camp (with the same program for each week). Camp is open to students ages 8-14, and all supplies and lunch are included in the registration fee. There will also be a one-day only gallery show (Saturdays, July 20 and July 27) to show off the students' work from their week of camp. Students will receive top-notch art instruction by professional artists and teachers. These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Craft Night Social

Tuesday, August 27 from 6-9pm. Bring in your own projects in progress and spend a few hours of uninterrupted time crafting. Meet other creative like-minded individuals as well. Open to knit / crochet / fiber arts, paper crafts / scrapbooking / stamping / card-making, sewing, jewelry, drawing, and general crafts. No wet media other than glue please. Del Ray Dozen Invitational Photography Show

The Del Ray Dozen Invitational Photography Show returns to Del Ray Artisans after a 4-year hiatus. This is a juried show and DRA member photographers are invited to prepare a portfolio with examples of their work to present to the jury in a portfolio review. The reviews are scheduled for August 7th and 21st, so get your portfolio together. Photographers who are accepted will decide which of their recent work they wish to display and will be given a space in the gallery. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 10 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

  • Post DRA Events on assigned Online Calendars
    Post approved DRA publicity materials on online calendars assigned to you. Each volunteer will have one or two web calendars to update. Must have internet access and will take approximately 30 minutes each time (usually twice per month). DRA members only. Contact Dawn at Technology@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Join Our Curator Support Team
    Volunteer to assist a curator in September, October, or November; offer your particular skill (hanging, spreadsheets, design) to a curator who needs it; or apply for the position of Director of Curating! Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Lesley Hall at Volunteers@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Reach Out for DRA!
    DRA is forming several small groups of volunteers to help coordinate our participation in community events. Sign up today for the: First Thursday Committee (May-Sep), Art on the Avenue Committee (October 5th event), or Community Requests Committee (ad hoc).   • Adopt-A-Park
    It's the season where cleanness equals points towards cash. Trash needs to be picked up from the small park and from around the gallery. About 1-1 1/2 hours of work on weekends through November 30. Contact Marlin G. Lord at Facilities@DelRayArtisans.org or 703-508-7471 with your availability.
  • Help document and shape DRA's Privacy Policy
    As we have grown in this technological era, new privacy concerns are popping up with regards to sharing personal contact information, photography at events, security cameras, and more. The Board is seeking members to help formulate and document a comprehensive privacy policy. Suggested policy revisions will be presented to the Board and the membership for final approval.   • Help with the Gallery Garden
    Dig, weed, and learn other skills by professional landscape designer and artist, Pamela Underhill. No experience necessary. Meet weekdays or weekends for an hour or more. Open Call for Mural Artists

Deadline extended to Sunday, June 30, 2013. This is an open call for artists to submit concepts to be considered for a mural that will cover the walls inside of the Torpedo Factory Art Center along the waterfront entrance. This call is open to all local and regional artists. The winner of the selected mural will be awarded $2,000. The juror, Shane Pomajambo, will select the top three proposals, with final selection to be chosen by Eric Wallner, CEO of the Torpedo Factory Art Center. Deadline for Entry: July 8, 2013. In the Flesh 4 returns after popular demand; this is an exhibition that examines contemporary figurative art.
