T.C. Williams Student Art Exhibition

16th Annual T.C. Williams Student Art Exhibition Opening Reception (Tonight)

Friday, May 3 from 7-10pm. The art of thirteen T.C. Williams High School students, who were selected as this year's National Art Honor Society inductees, will be on exhibit. Many of these students will continue their art studies at the college level and much of the work showcased was featured in their winning college admission portfolios. Show runs May 3-12. Alexandria Art Market

The Alexandria Art Market Returns!

Saturday, May 4 from 10am-4pm. The 4th season of The Alexandria Art Market will be held on the first Saturday of the month from May through September on the green space outside our gallery. A variety of original artwork from over 25 artists will be on display including painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, and glasswork. Partners in Art

View the Earth Matters exhibit with Partners in Art

On Monday, May 6 Partners in Art is taking a field trip rather than meeting at the gallery as usual. We are meeting at the Pavilion Café in the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden (www.pavilioncafe.com) for lunch at 11:30am. We will then congregate in the lobby of the National Museum of African Art (africa.si.edu) at 1pm to view the exhibit Earth Matters (africa.si.edu/exhibits/earthmatters). If you can join us for the museum and/or lunch please RSVP to Katherine Rand (katherine@katherinerand.com), so we will know to keep an eye out for you.

Life Drawing - Open Sessions

  • Monday, May 6 from 7-9pm (short pose)
  • Wednesday, May 8 from 11am-1pm (gesture)
  • Wednesday, May 8 from 2-5pm (short/long pose)
  • Sunday, May 19 from 9:30-11:30am (gesture)
  • Wednesday, May 22 from 2-5pm (short/long pose)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Artworks For Good Exhibit Opening Reception

Friday, May 17, 7-10pm. Del Ray Artisans (non-profit) is hosting a fundraiser art exhibit titled Artworks For Good. This exhibit features original artwork by area artists. Artwork is priced starting at $100; Take-Away art starts at $50. Artworks For Good runs from May 17 through June 1, and ends with a Closing/ Fundraiser/ Benefit Reception on June 1st (with open-mic auction!) to benefit Del Ray Artisans and the American Cancer Society in honor of arts patron Becky Arnold. Partners in Art

Monday, May 20 from 2-4pm. Looking for support in reaching your art-related goals? Partners in Art is a group of artists that meets regularly to share goals, report on progress, obtain feedback on current artwork, and discuss topics of interest to the group. Artworks For Good Exhibit Closing/ Fundraiser/ Benefit Reception

Saturday, June 1, 7-10pm, with an open-mic auction! This Reception honors Becky Arnold who passed away last fall after a battle with cancer. Becky was a passionate supporter of the arts and helped to grow Del Ray Artisans’ Gallery Without Walls program. Proceeds from this Reception will be split between Del Ray Artisans and the American Cancer Society in honor of Becky. Tickets to this Reception are $10. Grown-Ups Art Camp

July 1-12. What is "GUAC" you say? It stands for Grown-Ups Art Camp and represents a jam-packed 12 days of 18+ workshops. Sign up for as few or as many as you can handle! The schedule will be released within the next 2 weeks so stay tuned!

Call for Entry: Artworks For Good Fundraiser Exhibit

Receiving: Sunday, May 12 and Monday, May 13 from 6:30-8:30pm. Del Ray Artisans is hosting a fundraiser art exhibit with a closing Fundraiser/Benefit Reception. The proceeds of the art exhibit will go to DRA. Proceeds from the closing reception will be split between DRA and The American Cancer Society in honor of Becky Arnold. Artwork may be submitted through the Call For Entry process with a requested 40% donation from artwork sale -or- as a full donation to DRA. Only a limited number of donated artworks will be accepted. Members whose donated artworks are accepted will automatically satisfy their required 2013 DRA membership volunteer hours and are not required to gallery host for this show. Call for Entry: Music In Art

Receiving: Sunday, June 2 and Monday, June 3 from 6-8pm. This all-member, all-media exhibit explores the relationship between music and art. There is a long history of musical references and influences in the visual arts. We are looking for artists to give us their interpretations—your chance to bring music in art to life with your painting, sculpture, glass, fiber, jewelry, or a mixed media creation! CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 10 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

  • Help Needed for the 16th Annual Student Art Show
    Help out at the Opening Reception on Friday, May 3. Sitters needed to assist student sitters throughout the show, May 3–12. Please contact Lesley Hall at Volunteers@theDelRayArtisans.org for availability options.
  • Help with the May 18th fundraiser art exhibit: Artworks For Good
    Please contact Drew Cariaso at Curating@TheDelRayArtisans.org.
  • Join Our Curator Support Team
    Volunteer to assist a curator in September, October, or November; offer your particular skill (hanging, spreadsheets, design) to a curator who needs it; or apply for the position of Director of Curating! Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Lesley Hall at Volunteers@TheDelRayArtisans.org.
  • Reach Out for DRA!
    DRA is forming several small groups of volunteers to help coordinate our participation in community events. Sign up today for the: First Thursday Committee (May-Sep), Art on the Avenue Committee (October 5th event), or Community Requests Committee (ad hoc).   • Adopt-A-Park
    It's the season where cleanness equals points towards cash. Trash needs to be picked up from the small park and from around the gallery.   • Help document and shape DRA's Privacy Policy
    As we have grown in this technological era, new privacy concerns are popping up with regards to sharing personal contact information, photography at events, security cameras, and more. The Board is seeking members to help formulate and document a comprehensive privacy policy. Suggested policy revisions will be presented to the Board and the membership for final approval.   • Help with the Gallery Garden
    Dig, weed, and learn other skills by professional landscape designer and artist, Pamela Underhill. No experience necessary. Meet weekdays or weekends for an hour or more.   • Develop new features using PHP or SQL for the DRA Web Site

Call for Entries: 3rd Annual Workhouse Clay National Ceramics Exhibition

Entry deadline: May 8, 2013. The Workhouse Arts Center (LAF) announced the 3rd Annual Workhouse Clay National Ceramics Exhibition as an "Open Call" for functional and/or sculptural ceramic artworks. All works must be primarily ceramic. Mixed media works will be accepted only if ceramic materials are the primary media. Size is limited to artwork that fits through a standard door. Wall-mounted pieces are limited to 20 lbs. per section. Submit up to 3 entries. Juror: Virginia Scotchie. $30 entry fee. Cash awards. Workhouse Arts Center is in Lorton, Virginia. Photographer Fellowships: Aaron Siskind Foundation Invites Applications for 2013

Deadline: May 24, 2013. Fellowship grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to artists working in photography and/or photo-based art who demonstrate a serious commitment to photography and who are professionally active in the field. Works submitted may be traditional photography projects or experimental works, but photographic techniques must be pivotal to the work submitted. Call for Artist Vendors: Art on the Avenue on October 5, 2013

Submit Application by June 1 to be in the first round of judging. Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists and is known for high quality artwork. All work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. Showcase your most recent and best work, and list materials and retail prices on the back of each photo. Standard booth rate is $185 ($165 for Del Ray Artisans & students). Workshop: Altered Art Assemblage - Recycled Robot with Leslie Brier

Register by Friday, June 7; Workshop on Sunday, June 16, 10am-4pm. $85 fee, many supplies provided. Learn a variety of cold-connection techniques, collage methods, and experiment with Aves Apoxie Sculpt (a two-part epoxy clay) as you recycle/upcycle familiar objects, such as alarm clocks and spice tins, to construct your own altered art robot.
