Power Art

POWER ART Exhibit (Last Weekend!)

Silent Auction ends TODAY (Friday, March 29) at 9pm. The show closes on Sunday, March 31. Artworks that evoke an emotion or that make an impact. Power Art can be big, bold, and graphic—or quiet, minimalist. Power Art may address civil liberties, human rights, or environmental issues. Come experience the art and unusual materials. Turn On Your Masters art exhibit

Turn On Your Masters Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Opening Reception: Friday, April 5 from 7-10pm. Artists pay homage to their favorite masters, question the hoopla surrounding particular pieces and praise, critique, or dish the artists who have influenced them. Satire is a big compliment to a master artist as are works that pay homage to the master of any era or today. Two- and three-dimensional art and textiles. Pop-up Sewing Class

Sunday, April 14, pick either 9-11am or 12-2pm. If you've ever thought about learning how to sew (but didn't know how start), this event is for you. You'll learn the basics of sewing by operating a sewing machine to make an environment friendly tote bag. For ages 11 years old to adult. Supplies provided. Fee: $20 DRA members or $25 non-members. These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Partners in Art is a group of artists that meets regularly to share goals, report on progress, obtain feedback on current artwork, and discuss topics of interest to the group. Inside The Beltway exhibit ends Friday, April 19

The current Art in City Hall exhibit, Inside The Beltway, explores the sights of the Washington Metropolitan area. Art in City Hall is a collaborative program of the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, the Office of the Arts, The Art League, Del Ray Artisans and the Torpedo Factory Arts Center. Craft Night Social

Tuesday, April 23 from 5-9pm. Bring in your own projects in progress and spend a few hours of uninterrupted time crafting. Meet other creative like-minded individuals as well. Open to knit / crochet / fiber arts, paper crafts / scrapbooking / stamping / card-making, sewing, jewelry, drawing, and general crafts. No wet media other than glue please. Call for Entry: Art in City Hall from April 22–November 15

Deadline: TODAY (Friday, March 29) at 6pm. The Art League and the City of Alexandria, in conjunction with the Mayor's initiative to promote the arts, are coordinating a rotating fine art exhibit to enhance the environment of Alexandria's City Hall and to promote the talent of local artists. The exhibit will be juried by an outside, independent expert in the arts, and will hang for six months on the second floor of the Alexandria City Hall. Call for Artist Vendors: Art on the Avenue on October 5, 2013

Application deadline for discounted rate: April 1, 2013. Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists and is known for high quality artwork. All work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. Showcase your most recent and best work, and list materials and retail prices on the back of each photo. Standard booth rate is $165 ($145 for Del Ray Artisans & students) if postmarked by April 1. Call for Artist Vendors: Alexandria Art Market

Application Deadline: April 8, 2013. Join Del Ray Artisans in its 4th season of monthly outdoor art markets on the lawn area of the gallery. These markets give artists an opportunity to sell their original handmade artwork and provide them with consistent exposure to the community. There will be five (5) monthly markets on the 1st Saturday of the month (May through September) from 10am to 4pm, rain or shine. Call for Proposals: Instruct a Workshop at Grown-Ups Art Camp (GUAC)

Proposal Deadline: April 15, 2013. GUAC is an intensive schedule of workshops (day, night, weekday, weekend, holiday) from July 1-12. Participants sign up for each workshop individually. Workshops may be any length of time. We are looking for instructors to teach art techniques (e.g. painting, photography, pen and ink, mixed media) as well as artist development (e.g. writing an Artist Statement, framing, what IS a jpg). You can instruct beginners or those with more experience. Since GUAC is scheduled to be the prime activity, there will not be an art exhibit in the gallery and the floors will be protected, so "messy" workshops (e.g. mosaics, sculpture) may also be submitted!     It's the season where cleanness equals points towards cash. Trash needs to be picked up from the small park and from around the gallery.   • Help plan and carry out the May 18th fundraiser art exhibit

  • Manage Del Ray Artisans' Flickr Albums
    Help manage DRA's Flickr account by posting show and event photos taken by John Hiller (Director of Archives) and other volunteers, organizing albums/sets, and revising metadata as needed. DRA members only. Contact Dawn at Technology@TheDelRayArtisans.org.
  • Help document and shape DRA's Privacy Policy
    As we have grown in this technological era, new privacy concerns are popping up with regards to sharing personal contact information, photography at events, security cameras, and more. The Board is seeking members to help formulate and document a comprehensive privacy policy. Suggested policy revisions will be presented to the Board and the membership for final approval.   • Help with the Gallery Garden
    Dig, weed, and learn other skills by professional landscape designer and artist, Pamela Underhill. No experience necessary. Meet weekdays or weekends for an hour or more.   • Post DRA Events on various Online Calendars

Call for Entries: Art Uniting People – A Celebration of Creativity and Mental Health

Artwork and entry form due: Friday, April 12. Opening reception: Thursday, May 9, 5-8pm, at Lee Center, 1108 Jefferson Street. We are looking for artists to help celebrate National Mental Health Month in May. Art Uniting People seeks to engage the Alexandria community in a conversation about each person's uniqueness and commonality. This is part of an effort to raise awareness about the stigma faced by those with mental illness, substance use disorders, and intellectual disorders. Artists are invited to share the inspiration behind their art pieces and some of their personal story. Request for Proposals: Grants for K-12 Arts Education Programs

Deadline: April 30, 2013. Arts, Culture & Design in Schools, a charitable initiative of national retailer Target, is accepting applications from schools and nonprofit organizations for programs that bring arts and cultural experiences directly to K-12 students. The company is awarding grants of $2000 for programs that take place between September 2013 and August 2014. Grants are restricted to K-12 educational institutions and organizations with tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Workshop: Creativity in the South of France - Color!

Deposit due: May 1. Workshop: June 3-10, 2013. Join Priscilla Treacy in tiny Durfort, France, in the Midi-Pyrenees Region. Our seven-day workshop will mix instruction in color and gouache (opaque watercolor), daily excursions for painting or sightseeing, relaxing by the river, and enjoying meals prepared by our own private chef. We'll stay in an 18th century house that is filled with the music of the river that flows nearby. Entry Deadline: May 2, 2013. Visualizing Change, Inspiring Action! is the art exhibit part of Fest Too hosted by Convergence of Alexandria, VA. We welcome both professional artists and student artists (high school and above) working in all media. Fest Too is a three-day arts and music festival celebrating the Northern VA and DMV DIY community. Fest Too encourages out of the box thinking, new and non-traditional media, and emerging artists. What do you see? What moves you? What challenges your assumptions? Ask yourself, "What potential does my art have to move people?" Imagine and dare to inspire action outside the gallery walls. Call for Entries: 3rd Annual Workhouse Clay National Ceramics Exhibition

Entry deadline: May 8, 2013. The Workhouse Arts Center (LAF) announced the 3rd Annual Workhouse Clay National Ceramics Exhibition as an “Open Call” for functional and/or sculptural ceramic artworks. All works must be primarily ceramic. Mixed media works will be accepted only if ceramic materials are the primary media. Size is limited to artwork that fits through a standard door. Photographer Fellowships: Aaron Siskind Foundation Invites Applications for 2013

Deadline: May 24, 2013. Fellowship grants of up to $10,000 will be awarded to artists working in photography and/or photo-based art who demonstrate a serious commitment to photography and who are professionally active in the field. Works submitted may be traditional photography projects or experimental works, but photographic techniques must be pivotal to the work submitted.
