Shades of White Art Exhibit closes this Sunday (Jan. 27)

This is the last weekend to view Del Ray Artisans all-member show: Shades of White. And white isn't "just white"! Chill out after the holiday madness in shades of white—tones and hues range from blues to beiges to yellows and more. Show closes Sunday, January 27, 2013.


Dot and Dash

Dot and Dash Opening Reception: Friday, February 1, 7-10pm

Art is getting back to the basics: dot and dash. Artists deconstruct their individualized art-making processes to interpret the theme in their unique styles—showcasing two- and three-dimensional work that is painterly, graphic, realistic, and abstract. Must see! Dot and Dash runs February 1-24, 2013.

Children's Art Workshop for Dot and Dash

Workshop: Saturday, February 9 from 1–3pm at Del Ray Artisans gallery. Hands-on workshop for children (ages 5-12) to express themselves. They will focus on the attributes of lines and shapes in two-dimensions and three-dimensions, and create two pieces of art. Fee: $10/child for DRA members, $12/child for non-members. Partners in Art is a group of artists that meets regularly to share goals, report on progress, obtain feedback on current artwork, and discuss topics of interest to the group. These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $8 for DRA members and $10 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $6 for members and $8 for non-members. DRA Winter All Member Meeting & Art Swap

Sunday, February 17 from 2–4pm in the gallery. This DRA tradition is where members come to swap unused art supplies for "new to you" supplies from fellow members. Check your stashed old art supplies you thought you would use—if you haven't used them yet, give someone else a chance! Bring your supplies and place them on tables for display. Light refreshments will be served as we hear the latest DRA news.


Sweet 'n Salty at Prudential PenFed Realty runs through February 24

Sweet 'n Salty is a special Del Ray Artisans Gallery Without Walls art exhibit at Prudential PenFed Realty. Artists were asked to "give in to their cravings" to create dynamic and interesting interpretations of this very tasty and feeling-filled theme. Dot and Dash Art Exhibit

Receiving: THIS Sunday, Jan. 27 and Monday, Jan. 28, 2013 from 6-8pm. All work starts with a basic dot or dash. What types of marks do you use to start your creative process? This show is an investigation about getting back to the basics. Deconstruct and reconstruct your unique art-making style to interpret the theme Dot and Dash. We are looking for area artists to create in their own unique style—painterly, graphic, realistic, or abstract—in two- or three-dimensions. Call for Entries: POWER ART Art Exhibit

Receiving: Sunday, Feb. 24 and Monday, Feb. 25, 2013 from 6-8pm. Open to all artists. POWER ART makes others see familiar things in new ways; it evokes emotions. POWER ART can be big and bold, but it can also be quiet and simple. Regardless, it makes the viewer stop, and think. POWER ART is often a philosophical or satirical commentary. Call for Artist Vendors: Art on the Avenue - October 5, 2013

Application deadline for discounted rate: April 1, 2013. Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists and is known for high quality artwork. All work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. Showcase your most recent and best work, and list materials and retail prices on the back of each photo. Standard booth rate is $165 ($145 for Del Ray Artisans & students) if postmarked by April 1. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 10 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

  • Post DRA Events on various Online Calendars
    Post approved DRA publicity materials on specified web calendars. Each volunteer will have one or two web calendars to update. Must have internet access. DRA members only. If you are interested, contact Dawn at Technology@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Office Help Needed
    • We need someone to inventory what is in the Historical Closet (archive notebooks, banners, etc). It would be great if that list could also be typed up when finished but the typing up part isn't critical :-) Should take about 1-2 hours but must be done during business hours and preferably when the Office Manager is working (Thursdays and Fridays 12-6pm).     • Data Entering Help. We need a few people to type guest book entries into the Membership Database. Workshop: Make Your Own "Love Shack" House Journal

Register by: February 2, 2013. Workshop on: February 9. Bookmaking workshop Feb. 9 from 10am to 4pm. Join DJ Gaskin for some love-ly fun making a recycled-materials house book, themed "Love Shack"! Start with a food box, trim it to a house shape, use paper bags for pages, stitch it up pretty with colored thread & beads, add collage elements, and we’ll each have a little "house" journal! Call for Entries: Trash Talk

Deadline for Entry: February 4, 2013. Trash Talk is an all-media exhibition featuring work made from recycled/found objects. The work may include new materials, but 50% must be made of found/recycled objects. It is open to all artists nationally and internationally. The juror is Maren Hassinger, Director of the Rinehart School of Sculpture at Maryland Institute College of Art. Exhibition Dates: April 10-28, 2013. Call for Entries: Visiting Artist program at the Torpedo Factory

Application due: February 10, 2013. This Program is intended to serve as a professional development opportunity for emerging and experienced visual artists and to expose visitors to a new group of artists and projects. Applicants may apply for a one-, two-, or three-month summer residency (June, July, August). The Visiting Artist has the opportunity for informal collegial exchanges with Torpedo Factory artists. Call for Entries: 2013 Open Exhibition

Deadline for Entry: February 11, 2013. This is an Open Call for proposals for an exhibition in the summer of 2013. This call is open to all artists from North America working in all visual media. Proposals for exhibitions by both individuals and groups will be considered. The jurors this year are Foon Sham, Samantha May, and Morgan Hungerford West. Call for Entries: March150

Pick up Panel by: Feb 17. Artwork Due: March 1-5 (10am-6pm). The Target Gallery and the March of Dimes are teaming up to raise money for both organizations with the 3rd annual exhibition fundraiser: March150. The exhibit is not juried and is open to all artists with the requirement that the work must be created on the gallery's provided 10x10" wood panels. The $15 entry fee guarantees entry into the exhibit, a chance to win awards chosen by special judges, and free entry to the Art Party on Friday, March 15. Limit of 3 entries per artist. Call for Entries: Mayhem National Juried Exhibition

Deadline for submission: February 24, 2013. Join in the madness, mischief, and monkey business with the aim to create pandemonium, chaos, and discord at Arc Gallery's Mayhem National Juried Exhibition. Mayhem runs from May 4–25 at Arc Gallery, 1246 Folsom Street in San Francisco. No jewelry, video, film, performance, installations, works requiring external electrical source. $35 entry fee for up to three pieces. 60% of sale goes to artists, 40% to Arc. Call for Entries: Beyond Function

Deadline for Entry: March 4, 2013. Beyond Function is a media-specific exhibition with a focus on non-functional ceramic artwork. These works go beyond utility, seeking to be valued for their aesthetic quality over their usefulness. It is open to all artists nationally and internationally. Call for Entries: ArtsCONNECT; Project grants from Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation (MAAF)

Application deadline: March 15. For projects taking place between July 1, 2013 and June 30, 2014. Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation works to increase access to the arts in DE, DC, MD, NJ, NY, PA, VA, WV, and US Virgin Islands. MAAF’s ArtsCONNECT program supports collaborations across the region to facilitate tours of artists involving all performing arts disciplines (including dance, music, theater, & folk/traditional arts). MAAF is dedicated to bringing artists to underserved audiences throughout the region & encouraging meaningful exchanges between artists, audiences, & their communities. Call for Entries: Torpedo Factory 2013 Jury

Receiving: Monday, March 18, 9am-6pm. "As your new vice president DRA one of my hopes is to provide greater possibilities, avenues and mentorship for members who want to possibly work full-time in the arts. The upcoming jury at the Torpedo Factory is a really great place to start. You need 5 original pieces of your work plus another 10 to 20 on CD and a check for $50. At most you have $50 to lose.
