Enjoy a play on sweet-n-saltiness as we watch performance artists (novice? experienced? you interpret!) perform poetry and prose written by others. We are sure that unexpected outcomes will abound as writers see their writings being performed in ways they may not have expected!

Calling All Area Writers and Performing Artistst

Deadline extended: Apply Now! Event date: Sunday, October 14, 4–6pm. We are looking for: (1) writers to submit poetry or short prose that interpret the theme: Sweet 'n Salty, and (2) performers to "perform" the submitted works. Writers: Poem/prose should be no more than a page long. Performers: Performances can be spoken word, dance, music—whatever you are inspired to do by your assigned writing—but should be no longer than 5 minutes. Details at DelRayArtisans.org/shows/calls.


Serve on the Board: Act now for a 2013 Position!

Del Ray Artisans Board of Directors elections are on Sunday, October 21. The Nominating Committee is seeking volunteers interested in running for a Board position. In particular, the committee is looking for candidates for Vice President and Director of Fundraising. Terms of office are one year from January 1 to December 31.

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $8 for DRA members and $10 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $6 for members and $8 for non-members. Partners in Art is a group of artists that meets regularly to share goals, report on progress, obtain feedback on current artwork, and discuss topics of interest to the group. Bring Your Scraps and Come Have Fun with Collage Cut-Ups

Come play with the Collage Cut-Ups in a supportive environment that promotes an exchange of ideas, creativity, and networking with beginner and experienced collage artists. Sweet 'n Salty show runs through to Sunday, October 28

Artists were asked to "give in to their cravings... let their senses and personal experiences inspire them... push their boundaries" to create dynamic and interesting interpretations of the very tasty and feeling-filled theme: Sweet 'n Salty.


Telling Images Opening Reception: Friday, November 2, 7–10pm

The images in this juried photography exhibition tell, compel, imply, or suggest some sort of narrative or story: character, place, mood, feeling, plot, past, present, future, each richly implying a story the viewers are induced to imagine from the photographer's visual vocabulary. Any photographic technique qualifies, from pinhole camera, to film, to digital, to collage, whether monochrome or color. Visitors can expect a variety of images and interpretations of the theme. The show runs November 2–25, 2012.


Alexandria Art Market (Last One of the Season!) Saturday, November 3, 10am-4pm

The DRA is excited to announce its 3rd season of The Alexandria Art Market, which will be held on the green space at our Gallery. A variety of original artwork from over 25 artists will be on display including painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, and glasswork. Music performance by Jana Audey, 12-2pm. Del Ray Artisans' Holiday Market: Nov. 30–Dec. 2, Dec. 7–9, Dec. 14–16

The 17th annual Holiday Market offers handmade work from local artists, a children's table where little ones can shop for family members, and handmade ornaments. Bake Sale benefits the non-profit Computer CORE. The Market runs for three weekends: Nov 30–Dec 2, Dec 7–9, and Dec 14–16. Different artists each weekend! Alexandria Art Market (1st Saturday of the month. Open to all artists)

The Alexandria Art Market is a monthly outdoor art market that gives local artists an opportunity to sell their original handmade artwork and provides them with consistent exposure to the community. The market also has musical performances and food. The remaining market of the season is on Saturday, November 3 from 10am-4pm, rain or shine. Each artist is assigned a 10' X 10' space. Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 10 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

  • Co-Editor for the eBlast
    This weekly email filled with DRA news and local calls for entry doesn't write itself! Approximately 2-hour commitment per issue; must know either Microsoft Word or HTML. Work with the current Eblast Editor to divide up the weeks. Great way to "stay in the know" about local art opportunities. Contact Liz at enews@DelRayArtisans.org.
  • Holiday Market Bake Sale Coordinator (BSC)
    The BSC whips up bakers enthusiasm and assigns helpers to host the Bake Sales at each Holiday Market in December. Contact Tracy at HolidayMarket@DelRayArtisans.org if you are interested or would like more information.
  • Holiday Market Reception Food Coordinator
    Each Holiday Market weekend has a reception on Friday night. We are looking for someone to line up food from local restaurants and assign helpers for each Market reception. Please contact Tracy Wilkerson at HolidayMarket@DelRayArtisans.org if you are interested or would like more information.
  • Post DRA Events on various Online Calendars

Third Annual Handmade Holiday Craft Fair

Deadline for Vendor Applications: October 12, 2012.The third annual handmade holiday craft fair will take place at TC Williams HS on Saturday, November 17 from 10 am - 3 pm. This event will feature over 40 local, handmade vendors, student work, food, and more! There are still slots available to become a vendor! Workshop: Handle It! with Ryan J. Greenheck

Register by Monday, October 15. Workshop: Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 21 from 10am-4pm. This hands-on workshop will focus on wheel thrown forms that incorporate a handle. Ryan will demonstrate wheel throwing and trimming techniques emphasizing the mug form; lidded jars, pitchers, and teapots will also be presented. Placement of the handle in each piece will be a consideration from the start. Ryan will share ways to make handles using slab and coiled techniques; with a concentration on several 'pulled' handle skills. Call for Artist Vendors: Mount Vernon High School's Fall Fest 2012

Event: Saturday, October 20, 9am-4pm (Rain or Shine). The Fall Fest is a fun, family, community-based affair offering an opportunity for friends of Mount Vernon High School to display and sell their arts, crafts, rummage/garage sale items or small business services and goods. Proceeds benefit MVHS Student Activities. We are offering inside tables at a nominal rate for vendor sales. At a lower rate, we will also offer parking lot space to vendors who would prefer to be outside with the rummage and garage sale items. Call for Entries: Between the Lines: Contemporary Drawing Now

Deadline for Entry: November 5, 2012. Between the Lines: Contemporary Drawing Now is an exhibition at the Target Gallery that examines current trends in drawing today. This is an all media exhibit ranging from pencil on paper, to the conceptual, and to the three-dimensional. It is open to all artists nationally and internationally. Call for Artist Vendors: In search of artists for Artist Expo in Arlington

Proposals Due: November 7, 2012. Artist Expo on Sunday, December 2, 2012, at Congregation Etz Hayim (2920 Arlington Blvd - Rte 50) in Arlington, VA, 11:30 to 4 pm. Participation fee is $65. We provide a space no smaller than 9' x 6' (exact dimensions will depend on number of artists). We usually have 30-35 artists. This will be our 7th year. Call for Artists: Seeking Instructors for Spring 2013 Senior Arts Festival

Proposals Due: Friday, November 9, 2012. Goodwin House Bailey's Crossroads will host a Senior Arts Institute in the Spring of 2013, thanks to a Project Support grant from the Arts Council of Fairfax County. The Institute will consist of daily art classes that will be offered in various 'worlds of the arts,' including theater, dance, music, visual arts, handcrafts, and photography. Senior adults are the primary attendees of the classes, as well as creative arts staff from senior service organizations. Each session will be reimbursed at $125 per session. Pastel Workshop: The Pastel Society of Virginia Hosts Maggie Price

Deadline: Friday, November 9, 2012. The Pastel Society of Virginia (PSV) is pleased to host Maggie Price, internationally known and respected pastelist/author, Veteran's Day weekend November 10-12 at the Franconia Governmental Center. The theme is developing your vacation photos into pastel paintings, whether you're a beginner or more advanced. Call for Poets: City of Alexandria Poet Laureate

Nominations due: Monday, November 26, 2012 by 5pm. The City of Alexandria's Office of the Arts is in search of a Poet Laureate to promote an appreciation of poetry as an art form, encourage the creative writing and reading of literature, and promote literacy through poetry. The individual will serve as Poet Laureate for three years and receive a modest honorarium. Submit nominations to the Office of the Arts, 1605 Cameron St., Alexandria, VA 22314.
