First Thursday

Fashion's Night Out: TONIGHT (First Thursday, September 6) from 6–9pm

Art is always in fashion! Come to the gallery dressed as you please for a sneak preview of our exhibit, It Runs in the Family, which opens on Friday! Also during First Thursday, Del Ray Business Association will be collecting donations of new household items (towels, sheets, laundry supplies, dishes, etc) for Women's Domestic Violence Shelter. Drop off donations at the Farmers Market (Oxford and Mount Vernon Avenues) between 6–9pm.


It Runs in the Family

It Runs in the Family Opening Reception: TOMORROW (Friday, September 7) from 7–10pm

It Runs in the Family art exhibit explores how the need to create seems to run in families. The curators are exhibiting the artwork arranged together by "family" groups so visitors can explore the differences and similarities among the artists who are connected and related to one another.


Card Making Party

Card Making Party: Sunday, September 16 (2–4 pm)

A fun way to share and practice techniques and to make unique, creative greeting cards to re-stock the Del Ray Artisans card rack. Some supplies are provided, but bring any paper craft supply you have and wish to share. Bringing refreshments to share is encouraged too. No experience necessary. Partners in Art is a group of artists that meets regularly to share goals, report on progress, obtain feedback on current artwork and discuss topics of interest to the group. Bring Your Scraps and Come Have Fun with Collage Cut-Ups

Come play with the Collage Cut-Ups in a supportive environment that promotes an exchange of ideas, creativity, and networking with beginner and experienced collage artists. Art in City Hall exhibit runs through September 15

Art in City Hall is a collaborative program of the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, the Office of the Arts, The Art League, Del Ray Artisans and the Torpedo Factory Arts Center. Life Drawing - Open Sessions

  • Wednesday, September 19 from 7-9pm (short pose, clothed)
  • Sunday, September 23 from 9:30-11:30am (gesture)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $8 for DRA members and $10 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $6 for members and $8 for non-members. Calling all Fine Art & Fine Craft Exhibitors: Holiday Market 2012

Application deadline: TODAY (Friday, September 7, 2012). Interested in selling your fine art & fine craft treasures at DRA's Holiday Market in December? We are expanding to 3 weekends this year, so get your application in early! Why is there an application? Because, even though we are expanding, gallery space is limited and the variety of goods available at each Market weekend will be kept in balance. Application at: DelRayArtisans.org/shows/calls. Inside the Beltway, Art in City Hall: October 22–April 19

Deadline: Friday, September 28 at 6pm. The Art League and the City of Alexandria, in conjunction with the Mayor's initiative to promote the arts, are coordinating a rotating fine art exhibit to enhance the environment of Alexandria's City Hall and to promote the talent of local artists. The exhibit will be juried by an outside, independent expert in the arts, and will hang for six months on the second floor of the Alexandria City Hall. Members of The Art League, Del Ray Artisans, and the Torpedo Factory Artists' Association are invited to participate. For more information, visit DelRayArtisans.org/shows/calls/


Sweet 'n Salty Art Exhibit

Receiving: Sunday, September 30 and Monday, October 1, 2012 from 6:30-8:30pm Give in to your cravings and become inspired by the theme Sweet 'n Salty. Both words have a variety of connotations and meanings. Let your senses and personal experiences inspire you, and create dynamic and interesting interpretations of this very tasty and feeling-filled theme. Alexandria Art Market (1st Saturday of the month. Open to all artists)

The Alexandria Art Market is a monthly outdoor art market that gives local artists an opportunity to sell their original handmade artwork and provides them with consistent exposure to the community. The market also has musical performances and food. The remaining market of the season is on Saturday, November 3 from 10am-4pm, rain or shine. Each artist is assigned a 10' X 10' space. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 10 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

  • Adopt-A-Park in need of volunteers
    Litter needs to be picked up from the small Colasanto Park and around the gallery. About 1/2-1 hour of work on weekends: Oct 20-21, Oct 27-28, Nov 3-4 and Nov 10-11. Contact Marlin at MGLAIA@aol.com or 703-836-2724 with your preferred weekend.
  • Garden

Call for Performing Artists: Four Mile Run Farmers & Artisans Market Venue

The Office of the Arts, in partnership with the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, is seeking musicians and other interested performers for the Four Mile Run Farmers & Artisans Market held on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October. Family-friendly entertainment is appreciated. Artists must be self-contained and provide their own equipment. Parking is available. Call for Entries: Upheaval Photography Exhibit, Part of Fotoweek DC

Deadline extended to: Monday, September 10, 2012. In celebration of Fotoweek DC (November 9–18), the Target Gallery will host a juried photography exhibition that explores the theme Upheaval; whether in our own lives or throughout the world - illness, political unrest, and natural disasters are examples. This is a media specific photography exhibit that is open to all artists nationally and internationally. The juror is Brie Castell, owner and chief curator of Castell Photography. Call for Entries: Young at Art, Juried Artists Exhibition for Artists 55+

Artwork Receiving: Wednesday, September 12, 10am-Noon. Artists 55 years of age or older are invited to participate in the 26th annual Young At Art show to open on September 17, 2012 and run through January 24, 2013 at the Durant Arts Center (1605 Cameron St, Alexandria). This is the fifth year that Senior Services of Alexandria and Goodwin House Foundation have co-sponsored this juried show. Opportunity to Illustrate Creative Nonfiction Magazine

Deadline: Monday, September 17. The quarterly magazine, Creative Nonfiction, is seeking an illustrator for an upcoming "Southern Sin" issue. Will consider various media—line drawings, watercolor, collage; all styles of interpretation; must be well-suited to print format. Workshop: In a Pinch with Emily Schroeder Willis

Register by Monday, September 24. Workshop: Saturday, September 29 and Sunday, September 30 from 10am-4pm. This workshop will challenge common stereotypes of working with the simple pinch pot. Emily will demonstrate her process of creating vessels through pinching and coiling with porcelain. This workshop will have a balance of demonstrations, discussions, and hands-on studio time. Mornings will be spent with Emily showing her techniques and in the afternoon participants will try their hand at creating objects utilizing her methods. Deadline for Entry: October 8, 2012. Back by popular demand, this small works show is a juried exhibition at the Target Gallery that invites artists to submit work that cannot exceed 5" in any directions. This is an all media exhibit open to all artists nationally and internationally. The juror is Stefanie Fedor, the Executive Director of Arlington Arts Center. Workshop: Handle It! with Ryan J. Greenheck

Register by Monday, October 15. Workshop: Saturday, October 20 and Sunday, October 21 from 10am-4pm. This hands-on workshop will focus on wheel thrown forms that incorporate a handle. Ryan will demonstrate wheel throwing and trimming techniques emphasizing the mug form; lidded jars, pitchers, and teapots will also be presented. Placement of the handle in each piece will be a consideration from the start. Ryan will share ways to make handles using slab and coiled techniques; with a concentration on several 'pulled' handle skills. Call for Artist Vendors: Mount Vernon High School's Fall Fest 2012

Event: Saturday, October 20, 9am-4pm (Rain or Shine). The Fall Fest is a fun, family, community-based affair offering an opportunity for friends of Mount Vernon High School to display and sell their arts, crafts, rummage/garage sale items or small business services and goods. Proceeds benefit MVHS Student Activities. We are offering inside tables at a nominal rate for vendor sales. At a lower rate, we will also offer parking lot space to vendors who would prefer to be outside with the rummage and garage sale items. Call for Entries: Between the Lines: Contemporary Drawing Now

Deadline for Entry: November 5, 2012. Between the Lines: Contemporary Drawing Now is an exhibition at the Target Gallery that examines current trends in drawing today. This is an all media exhibit ranging from pencil on paper, to the conceptual, and to the three-dimensional. It is open to all artists nationally and internationally. Pastel Workshop: The Pastel Society of Virginia Hosts Maggie Price

Deadline: Friday, November 9, 2012. The Pastel Society of Virginia (PSV) is pleased to host Maggie Price, internationally known and respected pastelist/author, Veteran's Day weekend November 10-12 at the Franconia Governmental Center. The theme is developing your vacation photos into pastel paintings, whether you're a beginner or more advanced. The $400 registration fee includes three days of instruction, an opportunity to win up to $125 worth of Richeson products, daily boxed lunches, and 2012-13 membership in PSV.
