Member Meeting and Pie Contest

Member Meeting/ Cook–Out/ Pie–Baking Contest: Sunday, August 19, 5–7pm

Mingle with fellow artists and art-supporting members, enjoy the summer cook-out, and learn about what's planned for DRA. Bring a sweet or savory pie to participate in the Pie-Baking Contest. Boarderlines

Boarderlines Show runs August 3 – September 2, 2012

An art exhibit showcasing work by six members of Del Ray Artisans Board of Directors: Kathryn A. Brown, Drew Cariaso, Michele Reday Cook, Lesley Hall, Dawn Wyse Hurto, and Nora Partlow. Boarderlines is a journey across "boarders" and features a silent auction, gallery artwork, and take-away art.

Bring Your Scraps and Come Have Fun with Collage Cut-Ups

  • Tuesday, August 14 from 1-4pm
  • Tuesday, August 28 from 1-4pm

Come play with the Collage Cut-Ups in a supportive environment that promotes an exchange of ideas, creativity and networking with beginner and experienced collage artists. Collage Cut-Ups is an informal group where everyone works on individual projects. This is not a workshop. For more information, contact Millie Mateu at milaenartes@gmail.com.


Open Life Drawing Sessions (including a Sunday Gesture Session!)

  • Wednesday, August 15 from 6:30-9:30pm (long pose)
  • Sunday, August 19 from 9:30-11:30am (gesture, clothed)
  • Wednesday, August 22 from 2pm-5pm (short/long pose)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $8 for DRA members and $10 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $6 for members and $8 for non-members. Partners in Art is a group of artists that meets regularly to share goals, report on progress, obtain feedback on current artwork and discuss topics of interest to the group. CALL FOR ENTRY

It Runs in the Family

Submissions due: THIS WEDNESDAY, August 15, 2012, by mail, email, or drop off. Call for Entry form, entry fees, images, and other particulars are due at the gallery August 15. Show us your "artistic heritage" by submitting 2 to 6 artworks of yours and your relatives' (one per person) to prove that art "runs in the family." (And we define "family" broadly!) Only one DRA member qualifies your whole group for lower DRA entry fee. Artwork receiving for accepted pieces: September 3rd and 4th. Show runs September 7–30. Questions? Telling Images Juried Photography Exhibit (DRA Members Only)

Submissions due online before August 31, 2012. Some photographs tell, compel, imply, or suggest some sort of narrative or story: character, place, mood, feeling, plot, past, present, future. Submit up to four (4) single images, each richly implying a story your viewer is induced to imagine from your visual vocabulary. Your topic might include people, or empty spaces that imply presence, in a realistic or abstract style. Choose from your work a group that together tells our jurors what your eye is like. Calling all Fine Art & Fine Craft Exhibitors: Holiday Market 2012

Application deadline: Friday, September 7, 2012. Interested in selling your fine art & fine craft treasures at DRA's Holiday Market in December? We are expanding to 3 weekends this year, so get your application in early! Why is there an application? Because, even though we are expanding, gallery space is limited and the variety of goods available at each Market weekend will be kept in balance. Application at: DelRayArtisans.org/shows/calls. Please read everything and follow all the directions. Artist notification will be on Friday, September 14.


Alexandria Art Market (1st Saturday of the month. Open to all artists)

The Alexandria Art Market is a monthly outdoor art market that gives local artists an opportunity to sell their original handmade artwork and provides them with consistent exposure to the community. The market also has musical performances and food. The remaining markets of the season are on the following Saturdays: September 1 and November 3 from 10am-4pm, rain or shine. Each artist is assigned a 10' X 10' space. Artists are responsible for providing their own tents, tables, chairs, and displays. Contact Kimberly Bush (703-627-7656 or ArtMarket@DelRayArtisans.org). CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 10 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

  • Adopt-A-Park in need of volunteers for weekends in August through November
    Litter needs to be picked up from the small Colasanto Park and around the gallery. About 1/2-1 hour of work on weekends through November 25. Contact Marlin at MGLAIA@aol.com or 703-836-2724 with your availability.
  • HTML Layout
    Put the eBlast content into HTML. About 1-hour/week; two volunteers would share the responsibility to make it a 2-hour/month commitment. Must know HTML and have internet access. Contact Dawn at Technology@DelRayArtisans.org for more details.
  • Filing and Organizing Paperwork
    Hours available Thursdays and Fridays, 12-6pm. Email Gallery@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Garden
    Dig, weed, and learn other skills by professional landscape designer and artist, Pamela Underhill. No experience necessary. Meet weekdays or weekends for an hour or more. Bring a friend or come solo. It's fun, meditative, and builds muscles! Contact Underhill.Pamela@gmail.com or 703-507-4964.

Performing Artists: Four Mile Run Farmers & Artisans Market Venue

The Office of the Arts, in partnership with the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, is seeking musicians and other interested performers for the Four Mile Run Farmers&Artisans Market held on Sundays from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. through October. Family-friendly entertainment is appreciated. Artists must be self-contained and provide their own equipment. Parking is available. Call for Entries: The Fall Springfield Art Guild 2012 Art Show and Sale at Green Springs

Deadline: Sunday, August 19, 2012. The Green Springs Show and Sale is an annual event sponsored by Springfield Art Guild and Friends of Green Springs It runs from August 28 to October 28 and registration is due August 19. Artwork submitted must be based on natural, horticultural or local history themes. Lisa Semerad of The Art League School is the judge; there are $500 in cash prizes. Call for Artists: Masquerade National Juried Exhibition

Deadline: August 24, 2012. The title of this show is Masquerade National Juried Exhibition. The juror (Jack Fischer, of Jack Fischer Gallery) will be choosing art with the most imaginative interpretation of the Masquerade theme. Artists may submit up to three pieces of art. Entry Fee: $35. Workshop Abroad: Painting in Sicily, May 25-June 5, 2013

Deadline: December 1, 2012. Paint and live at a villa near the historically famous and beautiful city of Palermo. Maurizio Lanzilotta leads workshop focusing on the challenges and adventures of landscape painting by concentrating on light, space and visual language.
