Copyright Workshop Basics for Artists Workshop

Copyright Workshop Basics for Artists Workshop with Bill Briganti

Workshop: Thursday, June 21, 7–9pm. What is copyright? When is artwork protected? How does copyright law affect the use of previously created images, including photographs? What are the benefits of copyright registration? Bill Briganti, of the U.S. Copyright Office, will discuss such issues for visual artists, provide handouts, and answer questions. Information will be of a general nature; no legal advice will be given about specific artworks or individual artists. Limited space. Member-only registration until June 5; then open to all. Art on the Edge

Art on the Edge runs June 1 – June 24

This all-media "edgy" art show extends limits and breaks boundaries, daring artists to "go beyond the fringe" to explore peripheries of the unfamiliar, and celebrate the journey. Their creative responses may be inspired by sports, clothes, music, art, performance, food, lifestyle, violent nature, animals, living spaces, or dwelling places.

Open Life Drawing Sessions (including a Sunday Gesture Session!)

  • Sunday, June 17 from 9:30-11:30am (Gesture)
  • Wednesday, June 20 from 2-5pm (Short/Long Pose)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $8 for DRA members and $10 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $6 for members and $8 for non-members. Partners in Art is a group of artists that meets regularly (approximately twice a month) to share goals, report on progress, obtain feedback on current artwork, and discuss topics of interest to the group. Hot! Hot! Hot!

What comes to mind when hear "Hot! Hot! Hot!"? The surface of the sun, steamy dances, ice melting on the sidewalk? That's just what we asked area artists to do. No matter what our artists cook up, this show will definitely be hot! Chill with us as we heat up your sense with artwork and sizzling activities.

  • Salsa Dance Lessons, Friday, June 29, 7-9pm: Whether you are a seasoned Salsa-er or thought Salsa was just for chips, this event is sure to heat up the evening. Stop on by to learn some steps and mix and mingle with new people.
  • Reception, Friday, July 6, 7-10pm: Enjoy some "hot" music while appreciating the artwork and nibbles.
  • Steamy Action Movie Marathon, Friday, July 13, starting at 9pm: Movie night...no chick flicks in sight! Watch our website for a full movie listing.
  • Hot Dance Exhibition, Saturday, July 14, 7-10pm: Watch dancers perform some popular dances and try some of those moves after the performance.

ART CAMP

Wanted: Teachers, Instruction Ideas, and Volunteers

This year the theme to Art Camp is 5 Art Days ~ Different Ways! Art Camp runs from July 23-27 and the students are ages 8-14. What we are looking for are interesting craft or art ideas, artists who want to introduce these youths to a larger view of arts and crafts, and individuals willing to do tasks like help with lunch, help the instructors, and clean-up. Telling Images Juried Photography Exhibit (DRA Members Only)

Submissions due online before August 31, 2012. Some photographs tell, compel, imply, or suggest some sort of narrative or story: character, place, mood, feeling, plot, past, present, future. Submit up to four (4) single images, each richly implying a story your viewer is induced to imagine from your visual vocabulary. Your topic might include people, or empty spaces that imply presence, in a realistic or abstract style. Choose from your work a group that together tells our jurors what your eye is like. Alexandria Art Market (1st Saturday of the month. Open to all artists)

The Alexandria Art Market is a monthly outdoor art market that gives local artists an opportunity to sell their original handmade art work and provides them with consistent exposure to the community. The market also has musical performances and food. The remaining markets of the season are on the 1st Saturday of the months June through November (except October) from 10am-4pm, rain or shine. Seeking volunteers to help with...

  • Adopt-A-Park
    It's the season where cleanness equals points towards cash. Litter needs to be picked up from the small park and from around the gallery. About 1/2–1 hour of work on weekends through November 25. Contact Marlin G. Lord at MGLAIA@aol.com or 703-836-2724 with your availability. We are especially in need for volunteers June 16–17 and June 30–July 1 as well as the weekends in August.
  • The Hot! Hot! Hot!
    The Curators need help with receiving artwork on June 24 and 25 from 6:30–8:30pm, hanging artwork, creating wall tags, and helping with the variety of events presented throughout the show. If you are interested, please contact curator Tracy Wilkerson at tlwideas@comcast.net to sign up for one of these available volunteer spots.
  • eBlast HTML Layout [DRA members only]
    The eBlast Editor provides the content each week for the eBlast (this email!). The HTML Layout Coordinator takes that content and puts it into HTML format for dissemination. Must know HTML, how to FTP, and have internet access. About 1-hour/week; two volunteers would share the responsibility to make it a bi-weekly commitment.   • Rec Center After-School Art Program
    Looking for volunteers to teach an art class (about an hour long) once a month at the Mount Vernon Rec Center. Age group of kids is 9-12 years old. Teacher would be responsible for creating a project for the kids to work on in after-school care, and that they can take home. The Rec Center will coordinated purchasing art materials for each project. If interested in volunteering, contact Youth@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Gallery Without Walls Curator

  • Filing and Organizing Paperwork

  • Garden
    No experience necessary. Help in the garden. Dig, weed, and learn other skills by professional landscape designer and artist, Pamela Underhill. Call for Exhibition Proposals for City Galleries 2012–2015

Proposal Deadline: Monday, July 9, 2012 at 5 PM. Office of the Arts and Alexandria Commission for the Arts invite proposals from the artists for exhibitions in public galleries in the City. Proposals will be accepted from individual artists, consortia of artists, and organizations who work and/or live within the City of Alexandria. Exhibitions will run for six months. Call for Entries: Envisioning the Future

Deadline: Sunday, August 5, 2012. "What is in our future?" Isn't that the eternal question? How do you see your future? What have you fought and strived for? What do you hope for this country and the world – or beyond? Art is a way to express our hopes and dreams in a format that truly and completely conveys what we feel. Painting in Sicily – May 25-June 5, 2013

Deadline December 1, 2012. Paint and live at a villa near the historically famous and beautiful city of Palermo. Maurizio Lanzilotta leads workshop focusing on the challenges and adventures of landscape painting by concentrating on light, space and visual language.
