Open Life Drawing Sessions

Open Life Drawing Sessions (New Sunday Date Added)

  • Wednesday, April 18 from 7-9pm (Short Pose)
  • Sunday, April 22 from 9:30-11:30am (Gesture, Clothed)
  • Wednesday, May 9 from 11am-1pm (Gesture, Clothed)
  • Wednesday, May 16 from 6:30-8:30pm (Long Pose)
  • Sunday, May 20 from 9:30-11:30am (Gesture)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $8 for DRA members and $10 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $6 for members and $8 for non-members. Clay Portrait Workshop

Clay Portrait Workshop - April 28-29, 9am-1pm

Must register by April 25. This workshop introduces the participants to a basic study of the human head using an armature and clay. Participants will work with building the portrait structure on day one and use a model on day two. Principle of proportion will be discussed to better capture the physical and artistic expression. Lectures and demos will be presented throughout the day. The fee includes one bag of clay, the 4-hour model fee and instructor built armature. Firing fees and additional model time are extra. Childhood Memories - Show runs through April 29

If you've ever wondered where artists get some of their inspiration, what may be on their minds when thinking and creating art, or even more intriguing, what kind of childhoods they had, then you definitely won't want to miss this show. This exhibition features paintings, photographs, sculptures, traditional and abstract works by local area artists inspired by their childhoods or memories of their childhoods. Bring Your Scraps and Come Have Fun with Collage Cut-Ups

Come play with the Collage Cut-Ups in a supportive environment that promotes an exchange of ideas, creativity and networking with beginner and experienced collage artists. Artist Warriors: Post Apocalyptic Adventure at Prudential PenFed

The exhibit takes place at Prudential PenFed (300 N Washington St, Alexandria) and is open M-F 9am-5pm for viewing. This special DRA Gallery Without Walls art exhibit, Artist Warriors: Post Apocalyptic Adventure, will be on display until April 29 at Prudential PenFed. 15th Annual T.C. Williams Student Art Exhibition

Opening Reception: Friday, May 4 from 7-10 pm Once again we are proud to be showcasing the artworks of our area's teens. This year it is the art of thirteen T.C. Williams High School students, who were selected as this year's National Art Honor Society inductees, which will be on exhibit. Many of these students will continue their art studies at the college level and much of the work on exhibit was featured in their winning college admission portfolios. Show runs May 4-13. Decorating Parties for the United Way Shoebox Project

Tuesday, May 15 and Thursday, May 17 from 6-8 pm. Many of our neighbors are at risk of not meeting their basic needs including personal care products and emergency preparedness items. You can help by: (1) filling a shoebox with items like toothbrushes, socks, and soap; (2) decorating the shoebox and; (3) submitting a photo of the shoebox in the United Way Shoebox Project Decorating Contest. By entering the contest, you have the chance to win great prizes such as a Nook Simple Touch or a night stay at the Lorien Hotel and Spa in Old Town Alexandria. "Edgy Art" Workshop and Feedback Session

Workshop: Saturday, June 9, 10am-12:30pm. What is "edgy" art? Where did the idea come from? Is "edgy" up to the beholder to define? Creativity Workshop with Lynn Wyvill

Art on the Edge (June 1-24, 2012)

Receiving: Sunday, May 26 & Monday, May 27, 6:30-8:30pm. Where and what are the "edges" in your life experiences that inform your artwork? What kinds of edges draw you? How close do you dare get to a new artistic edge? How do you interpret "the edge"? Extend limits, break boundaries. Explore peripheries of the unfamiliar. Venture to the verge of a new reality. Art Camp

Dates/Times: July 23-27, 2012 from 9 am-4 pm daily
Gallery show: July 28, 2012 from 1-3 pm
Ages: 8-14

Del Ray Artisans invites young campers to spend a week creating art with professional artist instruction. All artist supplies, lunch and snacks are provided. The theme for this year's camp is: 5 Art Days ~ Different Ways! Each day of camp will focus on one new art medium and several of the uses for it (for example: painting on Wednesday includes watercolors, acrylic and fabric painting techniques). Students will then have an opportunity to display their work at a one-day only special gallery show on Saturday, July 28, where parents and friends can talk to the camp teachers and students about their experience.

Art Camp will be at the Del Ray Artisans gallery at the Nicholas A. Colasanto Center, 2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22301. The gallery is handicap accessible. Call for Entry: 224 Max Juried All-Media Show

Deadline for entry: Monday, April 16, 5pm. Artists are asked to submit works in any media that do not exceed 224 square or cubic inches in size. So a painting 12"x12" (144 total sq. in.) or a sculpture 8"x4"x6" (total cu. In.) or any work that met the side qualifications would be eligible. Call for Entry: Alexandria Commission for the Arts Special Opportunity Grant, Outdoor Temporary Public Art

Deadline: April 20, 2012 at 5pm. The Alexandria Commission for the Arts (ACA) is accepting proposals for the temporary placement or experience of art in public spaces through a special opportunity grant. The ACA is seeking innovative, thought-provoking projects by artists that relate to a proposed space or spaces in an engaging way. All artistic disciplines will be considered including, but not limited to: visual art, storytelling, poetry, spoken word, dance, music, theatre, performance art, and new media. Art In the Park - Easton, Maryland

Registration Deadline: April 21, 2012. Booth fees apply. "Art in the Park... Easton" is taking place at Idlewild Park on May 12, 2012, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This is the second year for this show. Talbot County Visual Arts Center is the hosting organization. The show is located in a beautiful park-like setting in a charming neighborhood of Idlewild Park. There will be extensive publicity for this show and hoping for a large turnout of shoppers. Jurying will be based solely on images that are provided with the application. Workshop: Seriously Simple with Robert Briscoe

Registration Deadline: Tuesday, May 1, 2012. Workshop Dates: May 19 & 20, 10 am to 4 pm. Join us in this two-day demonstration workshop with well known functional potter Robert Briscoe as he shares his techniques for wheel throwing and wet altering. After going through an impressive amount of clay on the wheel he will show his process of assembling pots to express and reflect the 'subtlety and nuance' of his aesthetic. Artwork Entries Due: May 6, 2012 (Postmarked by May 5). Rochester, NY's international small art phenomenon returns with thousands of original artworks, made and donated by celebrities, international & local artists, designers, college students, youths, and YOU. Each artwork must be 6"x6" inches square (or mounted to a 6"x6" board) and signed only on the back, to be exhibited anonymously. All entries will be accepted, exhibited, and will be for sale to the public for $20 each (in the gallery and online for global purchasing) to benefit RoCo. Call for Entry: Alexandria Fire Department's Design the Logo for Pink Breast Cancer T-Shirt Opportunity.

Deadline: June 1. Every October the Alexandria Fire Department wears a new t-shirt to help raise awareness and funds for the Alexandria Walk to Fight Breast Cancer Fund. There is a three-color limit and the image will be printed on pink shirts. This is a great opportunity for local artists and residents to have their artwork seen City-wide.
