An evening of Art Games

All are invited to "get their game on" at Del Ray Artisans gallery this Friday, February 10 from 7:30-9:30pm. Newly created Art Bingo will be played after a couple of artful mixer games. A prize will be awarded to the winner and light refreshments provided. The event is free, but a lucky $7 donation is suggested. For adults age 18 and older.

The time is here!!! DRA's winter All Member Meeting is this Sunday, February 12 from 2-4pm in the gallery. This is DRA's traditional opportunity for members to swap unused art supplies for "new to you" supplies from fellow members. If you haven't already, check your studios, basements, closets, attics - wherever you have stashed those old art supplies that you really thought you would use, but didn't... bring your old supplies with you to swap! Love, Politics & Scrabble: The Games People Play

Area artists interpret the games people play in life - sports, electronic games, mind games, or board games. The show was juried by local artist Moira McQuillen. There is also a fine art & craft Marketplace filled with art-to-go and handcrafted Valentine's Day cards. Let the games begin! Show runs February 3 - February 26, 2012.


Bring Your Scraps and Come Have Fun with Collage Cut Ups

Come play with the Collage Cut Ups in a supportive environment that promotes an exchange of ideas, creativity and networking with beginner and experienced collage artists. Collage Cut Ups is an informal group where everyone works on individual projects. This is not a workshop. For more information, contact Millie Mateu at milaenartes@gmail.com.

Open Life Drawing Sessions

  • Wednesday, February 22 from 2-4pm (Short/Long Pose)
  • Wednesday, March 7 from 11am-1pm (Gesture, clothed) and 2-4pm (Short/Long Pose)
  • Wednesday, March 14 from 6:30-9:30pm (Long Pose)
  • Sunday, March 18 from 9:30-11:30am (Gesture)
  • Wednesday, March 21 from 2-4pm (Short/Long Pose)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $8 for DRA members and $10 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $6 for members and $8 for non-members. Artist Trading Cards

It's time for another Artist Trading Card night on Friday, February 17 from 7-9pm! What better time to have it than during the show featuring games? Come join in the fun. Bring a finished ATC created from a playing card. You will also create some new ATC's under the leadership of ATC Queen Theresa Kulstad. Light refreshments served. Free. Adults 18+

Game Talks

On Saturday, February 25 from 3-5pm meet and learn from members of the illustrious Capital Pool Checkers Club, part of Del Ray Artisans February art exhibit, "Love, Politics, and Scrabble: The Games People Play". After discussing pool checkers strategy, Capital Pool Checkers Club members will challenge the audience to games of pool checkers. Extreme couponist Gladys Wise will also share her insights into the game of couponing. Refreshments; adults 18+; Free.

Partners in Art Group

Looking for a chance to get together with other creative people to discuss art and exchange ideas? Then come to a meeting of our cooperatively-led Partners in Art group. You may find us engaged in a creativity exercise, enjoying a short demonstration or having in a lively art-related discussion. This program is free of charge and open to all. XX: 1992-2012 DRA's 20th Anniversary Celebration (March 2 – April 1, 2012)

Receiving: Sunday, February 26 & Monday, February 27, 6:30-8:30pm. Del Ray Artisans are celebrating 20 years of art in the neighborhood. This show will feature the best works then and now. If you have been a Del Ray Artisans member for 10, 15, or 20 years, then consider entering a piece that you showed here for the first time as well as a current piece. If you are a new member, bring in a piece that best represents your artwork. There is no "theme" and anything goes. Bring the best! Curator: Kurt Peterson (kfpeterson@gmail.com). Childhood Memories (April 6–29, 2012)

Receiving: Sunday, April 1 & Monday, April 2, 6:30-8:30pm. Dig deep into the recesses of your mind and recall your childhood memories. The Virginia Art Commission declared 2012 the Year of Children in Arts. Further details will be coming. Seeking DRA Members for...

  • Plan a Reception: Volunteers needed to help plan the March 8th reception for the new City Manager. Please respond ASAP.
  • Photographing Opening Receptions: We need volunteers who know how to shoot pictures that we could use in our publications and as a part of the archive. We also need someone to process the images for upload to Flickr. Photoshop knowledge is helpful.
  • Monthly Phone Messages: We need a volunteer to record and update the phone message at the gallery around the 1st of every month. Time commitment is about 30 minutes per month.
  • Membership Database: We need a couple of volunteers to transfer contact information from our Guest Book into the Membership Database. Ideally commit to Thursdays or Fridays between noon & 6pm, but other arrangements could be made.
  • Monthly Mailing: Although we have gone "green" with our newsletter, we still have a few members who need to have their newsletter mailed to them. Requesting a volunteer to commit to about an hour per month folding, sealing, stamping, labeling and mailing approximately 60 newsletters. This needs to be done at the end of each month.

Public Art Committee seeks volunteers

Applications Due: Friday, February 10, 5 pm. The Alexandria Commission for the Arts is seeking volunteers to serve on the Public Art Committee. This Committee provides advice to the Arts Commission and staff on the acquisition and funding of public art in the City. Volunteers should plan to devote 12-16 hours/month. Committee volunteers serve an important role assisting the Alexandria Commission for the Arts in advancing the organization's goals, objectives and strategies. Call for Entry: Love Notes

Register by Friday, February 10, 2012 at 4pm. A Valentine Show/Sale/ Fundraiser at the Sandy Spring Museum, in Sandy Spring, Maryland on February 11 & 12, 2012. A note, a letter, an image, a shape that conveys an aspect or expression of love. A Valentine can be about or to a person, an animal, a place, our world, anything or anyone the artist cares about. Call for Entry: Art and Earth Juried Exhibit

Register by February 20, 2012. The exhibit, which will be produced by the Berkeley Arts Council in collaboration with The Arts Centre in Martinsburg, WV, has the theme: Art and Earth: My Art - My World. Artists in all media are invited to submit works that express their feelings about nature and the environment. The Juror for the exhibit will be Laura Amussen, Director of Exhibitions and Art Collection Coordinator at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland. Call for Entry: ISMs

Register by Wednesday, February 22, 2012 by 5pm. In this show, artists are asked to pick an "ism" and submit a work in that style. Can you see references in your work to Georges Braque's cubism, Georges Rouault's fauvist paintings, Pierre-Auguste Renoir's impressionism, or to any other "ism" of any period? Mentoring Opportunity through Art Cart: Saving the Legacy

Seeking visual Artists from Washington, D.C. to participate in this intergenerational art project. ART CART will connect senior professional artists with teams of student fellows to undertake the preparation and documentation of their creative work, offering both groups an educational experience that will help shape the future of our cultural legacy. The nine-month project (September 2012-May 2013) is run by the Research Center for Arts and Culture at the National Center for Creative Aging. Currently, we are looking for visual artists; age 62+, who may want to participate in the program.
