Beyond Form: Expressing Art Exhibit at Signature Theatre – Closing June 12

This is a juried selection of pieces from the recent abstract art show at the DRA gallery. This all media, abstract art show is exhibited in the lobby gallery of Signature Theatre in conjunction with their run of "ART" by Yasmina Reza in which a white-on-white abstract painting plays a leading role! Visit our exhibit whenever the Signature lobby is open, Tuesday – Friday 10 am - 10 pm, Saturday and Sunday noon - 10 pm.


Artist Trading Card Party

ATC (Artist Trading Card) Party - Friday, June 17, 7-9pm

Come join us for an evening of free fun at the gallery. We will provide desserts and beverages or bring something to share. Cards, magazines for collage, markers and paint provided. Make several cards and start a collection of traded "mini art". The gallery's show, Drawing Inspiration From the Human Figure, will be our theme for at least one of your cards, to be hung in the show as a compilation ATC piece.

This all members exhibit showcases DRA members' artwork inspired by the human form. Included is a captivating collection of drawings of the figure done from life. Of particular interest are preliminary sketches done by artists that were then developed further into works that hang in this show. The show runs through June 26.

Bring Your Scraps and Come Have Fun with Collage Cut Ups

Do you feel overwhelmed with the deluge of junk mail and magazines that come in the mail? Well here's your chance to beat the paper avalanche. Come play with the Collage Cut Ups in a supportive environment that promotes an exchange of ideas, creativity and networking with beginner and experienced collage artists.

Open Life Drawing Session in June

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models.

  • Wednesday, June 15 (6:30 pm - 9:30 pm long poses)
  • Wednesday, June 22 (11-1 pm, gestures; 2-5 pm, short/long poses)

Partners in Art Group

Looking for a chance to get together with other creative people to discuss art and exchange ideas? Then come to a meeting of our cooperatively led Partners in Art group. You may find us engaged in a creativity exercise, enjoying a short demonstration or having in a lively art-related discussion. Through it all we will always be striving to inspire and encourage.

Alexandria Art Market – Saturday, July 2, 10am-4pm

Alexandria Art Market's 2nd season is now underway. Upcoming markets will be held the 1st Saturdays of July, August, September and November 2011, 10-4 pm, rain or shine. The market boasts amazing artwork from local artists, music from multicultural musicians and great food from local restaurants. Located on the green space of the Del Ray Artisans' gallery in Colasanto Park.

Art in City Hall

Art in City Hall "Around Town"

This juried exhibit was open to members of The Art League, Del Ray Artisans, and the Torpedo Factory Artists' Association. The Juror was Ginger Hammer, Assistant Curator of Old Master Drawings at the National Gallery of Art. The exhibit showcases images in all media of and about Alexandria, and is on display in the second floor corridors of Alexandria's City Hall through December 16, 2011. City Hall is open 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday.

Artistic Rain Barrel Artists' Reception and Silent Auction

Saturday, June 11, 5-7 pm: Have you seen the delightful rain barrel attached to the front railing at the DRA gallery? Over the last month DRA has served as an Artistic Rain Barrel site sponsor for Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District. On Saturday, June 11 from 5-7 pm at Green Spring Gardens (4603 Green Spring Road, Alexandria, VA 22312) there will be a Meet-the-Artist Reception and Silent Auction of this barrel and 24 other rain barrels decorated by local artists. Montpelier Arts Center: Writing Workshop For Artists – MD

Writing Workshop For Artists, 3 classes, June 11-25, Saturdays 1-4 pm. This course covers the ABC's of writing for the artist including the artist's statement; the press release, corresponding with galleries, developing texts for catalogs and new media. Knowing how to write for each situation is an invaluable tool for the artist. The Instructor, Kay Lindsey, is a poet and artist. Alexandria Commission for the Arts is seeking a volunteer for Public Art Committee (NEW)

Deadline: Friday, June 17 at 5pm. The Alexandria Commission for the Arts is seeking a volunteer to serve on the Public Art Committee who will represent the West End of Alexandria. The Committee member appointed will serve an unexpired term through October 2011, at which time the member may reapply for a three-year term. Academy of Fine Arts Annual National Juried Photography Exhibition – VA (NEW)

Call for Entries: SOLOS 2012 – VA

Deadline: July 1, 2011. Each year AAC selects 10 to 14 artists from across the Mid-Atlantic region for solo exhibitions in AAC's seven separate gallery spaces – or outside on the grounds. This SOLOS exhibition program provides an invaluable opportunity for emerging artists to exhibit work in an environment that is well-known for cutting edge, exciting contemporary art in the DC metro area. Southern Regional Tech/Rec Complex Public Art Project #1 Exterior Entry – MD

Deadline: July 15, 2011. The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Department of Parks and Recreation invites artists with professional experience in creating public art or site specific commissions to submit an application to design, fabricate and install original works of art for the exterior grounds of the Southern Regional Tech/Rec Complex (Tech/Rec), currently under construction in Fort Washington, Maryland. Eligibility: Artists and artist teams residing in Maryland, Virginia, Washington, DC, Delaware, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, North Carolina, and West Virginia with previous public art or large scale installation experience may apply. First Annual Silver Spring Latino Fiesta

You're invited to be part of the celebration, promotion and diffusion of Latin American culture in the Washington Metropolitan. Hispanic Heritage month pays tribute to heritage, tradition, and diversity.
