Beyond Form: Expressing Art Call for Entry: February 27-28 (6-8 pm)

Beyond Form: Expressing Art, is open to all area artists, with a spotlight on painting. See the gallery zipping with positive energy, beauty, truth, and color! See the counterpoint of monochromatic simplicity, stillness, and restraint—lending balance and white space. Whichever direction you go, let it be lovely, for as Kandinsky once said, "An empty canvas is a living wonder... far lovelier than certain pictures." Download the Call for Entries at DelRayArtisans.org/shows/calls/Due-2011-02-28-BeyondForm.pdf. As a benefit to Del Ray Artisans members, an additional exhibit opportunity under our Gallery Without Walls program allows DRA members only to submit selected abstract artworks from Beyond Form to a juried exhibit at the Signature Theatre during the run of ART [for 8 weeks from March 29 through May 22]. DRA hopes this inspires you to start painting NOW! For more information, contact Betty Plummer at 703-892-8638 or DRA.newsletter@gmail.com.

Special Announcement

Arts Advocacy

Last week, President Barack Obama delivered his annual State of the Union speech where he addressed three areas of concern that resonate with arts advocates: federal spending, jobs and education policy. Earlier this week, 165 conservative members of Congress representing the Republican Study Committee called for termination of the National Endowment for the Arts [est. 1965] and key arts education programs at the U.S. Department of Education.

In the New York Times, Americans for the Arts President and CEO, Bob Lynch, pointed out that the arts support 5.7 million jobs in the United States that generate about $30 billion in taxes, nearly $13 billion of which goes to the federal government. He went on to say, "If they're serious about jobs and they're serious about income, they would invest more in the arts."

We know that the battle to protect these programs will be tough this year, but with your help, not insurmountable. Please take two minutes to send a message to your member of Congress in support of the National Endowment for the Arts or arts education at the U.S. Department of Education. Help continue this important work by becoming an official member of the Arts Action Fund—it's free and simple.

A Special Thanks

Please take a moment to reach out to Senator Chuck Colgan and Delegate Riley Ingram to thank them for supporting the Virginia Commission for the Arts this General Assembly Session. They showed how important they think the arts are in Virginia by submitting budget amendments that would add $1.2 million in general funds that would go to arts grants through Virginia Commission for the Arts. If these amendments were adopted, the investment would result in $14.4 million in economic activity across the Commonwealth. To contact their Richmond offices by phone, letter, or email please see the information below:
