From our Trees... Artistry is Revealed October 10 - Nov 2, 2008From OurTrees...Artistry is Revealed

From different perspectives and with different tools, artists and artisans will draw inspiration from the gentle giants of the plant world.  Included will be the American Arts & Crafts inspired designs of furniture maker Stewart Crick; the vibrant watercolors of Alice Kale, known for her renderings of Del Ray; the signature fluted trumpet bell forms of Phil Brown; the serene views of Oscar and Emmy Award winning photographer John Hiller; oils by Michele Reday Cook and Diane McClaugherty; sculpture by Lynda Smith-Bugge; and natural edge turned vessels by Patrick O’Brien.   The exhibit is curated by furniture conservator Ron Blank.

The Artistic Self-Portrait in the 21st Century Picture Me
The Artistic Self-Portrait in the 21st Century. Self-portraits have been an artistic expression of self for centuries from Michelangelo who depicted himself twice in the Sistine Chapel’s The Last Judgment (both as St. Bartholomew and as flayed skin held by St. Bartholomew) to Rembrandt who portrayed himself more than 90 times during his lifetime. Taking the self-portrait beyond the canvas, abstract sculptor Louise Nevelson depicted herself in black painted wood with a wall-sized piece titled, Self-Portrait: Silent Music IV. Today, new media are allowing artists to redefine the self-portrait as witnessed in the millions of pixilated images that are e-mailed, IM’ed, posted on Facebook and printed from the home computer everyday. How do you define self-portrait?

The Del Ray Artisans’ All-Member Show, PICTURE ME! The Artistic Self-Portrait in the 21st Century is your opportunity to portray yourself as you truly are, wish you were, or pray that you are not. Be a part of this redefining exhibition, all are invited to submit works in any style or medium.

ART CAMP 2008 students created two large collaborative murals that will be on display. The art-field week ended with storytelling by Dianna Dietz and "bang up" drumming circle ring run by Mahiri Keita and Dan Peterson.

Since the beginning of time, artists have attempted to
capture the human figure in all its diversity. Ancient drawings
and sculptures may have been symbols of fertility
or of great bravery. The human figure was depicted as deities and in religious rites.

Your Life is Art

AUGUST 11, 2007
1:00-4:00 p.m.  • Del Ray Artisans
2704 Mount Vernon Ave.  • Alexandria, VA
703) 838-4827

$60 DRA members • $75 non-DRA members

( Have you ever heard yourself say something like, “I’m not creative,”  or
“I’ve never been good at art...I can’t even draw flies!”

Ever watched wistfully as your child colored outside the lines, drew green and purple tigers pouncing on clouds of marshmallows, or whipped up a family portrait of meltingly moving stick figures, complete with the family dog and goldfish? Why is it we believe that creativity and visual expression are the exclusive domains of children, or worse…those mysterious, uber-talented, somewhat eccentric, and often vastly scary creatures called “artists?”

Your Life is Art is about showing people that they are creating art every day simply by the way they live. The way you live is the outward expression of the person you are, the feelings you have, the words you use, your posture, your humor, the way you move, the way you do anything…Is artful. It’s artful because no one can live the exact same life the exact same way. We all create as we go along.

Participants in Your Life is Art will learn to:

• Embrace the creative energy of destruction
• Discover the expressive power of the stick figure
• Explore the graphic nature of the written word
• Learn new ways to “process” life.
• Find freedom in using their “voices” visually.
• Own what in their lives is done artfully.
