History of Del Ray Artisans Celebrate the Art of Making |
|
Our gallery is located in the multi-culturally diverse community of Del Ray in Alexandria, Virginia. We believe that by using art to reach out to the community as a whole, Del Ray Artisans helps build a stronger, more vital place to live and work. Membership in the Del Ray Artisans is open to any person regardless of background. Del Ray Artisans (DRA) was founded in 1992 as a community art center to host exhibitions, slide lectures, classes, workshops and to introduce new audiences to fine and functional art. We have presented collaborative exhibitions with such groups as the Washington Woodworkers Guild, Virginia-Tech's Washington-Alexandria Architecture Center, LIFETIME Television, Jones Intercable (COMCAST), Springwater Fibers Workshop, City of Alexandria public schools, the Choreographers Collaborative Project and the Alexandria Office on Women. The DRA is ensuring its vitality by forming strategic partnerships with the following organizations: Potomac West Business Association, the Alexandria Convention and Visitors Association, The Avenue Partnership and the Fairfax County Office of Adult and Community Education. Arts Resource Foundation is a 501(c)(3) public membership organization formed to create and support community-based arts organizations and promote the arts as a resource for community development. Del Ray Artisans' mission is to foster a community of artists and art supporters who are a viable source for the development, teaching, and furtherance of appreciation of the arts through exhibits and events for members and the diverse populations in the City of Alexandria, the communities of Northern Virginia, and the greater Washington metropolitan area. Del Ray Artisans is funded, managed, and operated by Arts Resource Foundation. _________ ... __________ About Member Volunteers...REQUIRED TO GET INVOLVED *

What people are
saying about DRA ... Greetings from the sunny South, During this 2nd Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, I just wanted to take a few moments to say “Thank You for all of your support and help,” not only for myself but for the artists in Hancock County, Mississippi. Because of your huge generosity, I and we are getting back up on our feet and moving forward, recovering from that awful day 2 years ago that changed our lives forever — for the good and the bad. I am happy to report that I am back in my studio and house, and creating once again, slightly scarred but forever hopeful. My community, Bay St. Louis and Waveland, MS are both recovering albeit not fast enough. And of our artists in Hancock County, the majority of them are creating also, and quite a few are back in their homes and studios, but we have lost a few more artists that have struggled since the storm. Approximately 10 galleries have opened in our towns, and we will host our Arts Alive! 2007 Studio Tour next month (October 22-23). Because of you and your helping hands, you have shown us a light to move forward, and help provide us a purpose, a place to sell our artwork, and supplies to create. Thank you seems such a small thing, but in my heart and our hearts it is huge, because through you our wonderful arts community is rebuilding. All my love and thoughts, Liz

"On behalf of the
entire school, I would like to thank . . . the Del Ray Artisans for
sponsoring our exhibition . . . (it) gave us a wonderful opportunity
to engage the community and for the students to put their work out
for public review . . . Seeing their work . . . made them very proud
of their accomplishments."

"Del Ray Artisans
is a very important cog in the wheel of Potomac West in general and
Del Ray in particular. How do we celebrate our
diversity--generationally, economically, culturally and
artistically? Del Ray Artisans."
