Tireless is the best way to describe DRA member Peggy Ashbrook’s dogged devotion to policing the park next to the Colasanto Center.

As she cruises through the area picking up unsightly debris, helping DRA earn over $900 annually, she’s also contributing to Alexandria’s beautification and providing “a beautiful gateway to the Del Ray neighborhood.” (from letter of recognition

DRA hosts Shelley A. Marshall Foundation workshop

During the Fun ‘n Games Redux exhibit, DRA was pleased to be able to offer our gallery facilities to the Shelley A. Marshall Foundation. This foundation, created by Donn Marshall in memory of his wife Shelley who was killed in the Pentagon attack on 9/11, “. . . fights inhumanity by stoking the fires of humanity, by stimulating creativity and compassion in order to inspire and enrich the human spirit.”

The Marshall Foundation offers high-school age students the opportunity to study and paint with various professional artists. On July 10th and 11th, a workshop was taught by Mehran Rashidfarokhy, a rising young Alexandria artist  who is rapidly earning acclaim for his impressionist-inspired works.

Students received all the necessary supplies- paintbox, easel, brushes, palette, palette cups, a palette knife, canvases, brushes, and more than two dozen oil paints-as well as meals during their Summer Arts Workshop Series.

DRA Vice President Jen Chappell helped facilitate DRA’s offering of the space to the Foundation for their classes. This outreach program helped both organizations as the Marshall Foundation donated and installed daylight-balanced light bulbs in the gallery to upgrade the existing fixtures.

To learn more about this worthwhile organization visit the foundation’s website at www.shelleysfoundation.org .

ByLaws draft completed

The Asiatic elephant is tops in the animal world at 760 days. But, after possibly one of the world’s longest gestation periods, the DRA have a draft set of ByLaws.

This essential document has been talked about, tossed around and had fitful starts and stops for years as Board members have come and gone.

Why are ByLaws important? They are the roadmap for how an organization operates.

Starting with the Articles of Incorporation, moving to the bylaws ultimate goal is to have a set of procedures that describe and define what an organization is all about and how it goes about its business.

Many thanks to Dave Nicholson for pulling this together. He used seven different sources for reference. The Board now is in the process of finalizing the document.
