$100 & Under Art Exhibit Opening Reception (Tonight!)

Friday, November 1 from 7-9pm. Del Ray Artisans is bringing back our popular exhibit concept from 2015 and 2017, showcasing members' original arwork — all priced at $100 and under. Buyers will take art home immediately after purchase during this exhibit (November 1 – December 1). This will be a rapidly evolving exhibit, as sold artwork is replaced each week with new work, so visit frequently to shop from lots of great art at prices all art-lovers can afford. Local Artisan Showcase at VCA Alexandria

Call for Entry: Local Artisan Showcase at VCA Alexandria (Next week!)

Digital entries due: Tuesday, November 5 by midnight. This is a year-long Gallery Without Walls exhibit at the VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital that will showcase Del Ray Artisans members artwork in the hospital exam rooms. Most subjects are welcome, with pieces featuring animals preferred. No entry fee; only open to Del Ray Artisans members. Pieces will be sold in a “cash and carry” arrangement. Local Artisan Showcase is a Del Ray Artisans' Gallery Without Walls exhibit at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital from November 11, 2019 - November 18, 2020. Playing with Resin

Workshop: Playing with Resin

Sunday, November 10 from 6-9pm. Come play with resin in a safe environment – learning the ins & outs of mixing resin and using it in your artwork as an adhesive, a covering, or the main medium. You’ll leave your finished masterpiece(s) to set at the gallery at the end of the workshop, and pick them up during gallery hours later in the week. Cost: $40 members and $50 non-members; plus $10 supply fee. Register by November 7 at DelRayArtisans.org/event/resin/


Card Making Party

Card Making Party

Monday, November 11 from 4-8pm. Come to the gallery for our card making party on Veterans Day! All are welcome to this FREE, creative social party and giving event to benefit Del Ray Artisans. Donated handmade cards will be used to freshen up the gallery card display and for the Sunshine Committee to send to members and friends who could use a little "shine" to brighten their day. Plus, we'll make some upbeat cards for our Veterans on this national holiday! Creative Spark Book Club

Creative Spark Book Club

Saturday, November 16 from 10:30am-12pm. We meet every other month on a Saturday morning to discuss readings by a variety of authors to help you stay inspired and motivated for your creative practice. The club is FREE and open to members and non-members who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other like-minded creative people. Golden Paints Mixed Media Lecture & Demo

Sunday, November 17 from 7-9pm. Join certified working artist Amy Shawley Paquette for a FREE lecture and demo on Golden paints. Learn about the wide range of Golden acrylic paints and mediums, along with the new QoR Watercolors, and discover how they can enhance your Mixed Media projects! Learn what to put under paint, and how to layer, create washes, stains, and collage; plus learn about a variety of tools and techniques. Great for beginners and experienced artists. These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. All upcoming sessions may be found in this calendar view

Need support reaching your art related goals? Join this collegial group of artists to share your goals and get feedback on artwork. All local artists, from beginners to professionals, and all skill levels are invited. Meetings include discussions on exhibit opportunities, the creative process and the local art scene. Participants may also bring in 1-3 artworks, in any medium, in any stage, to discuss goals, process, and ask for advice. Free, donations ($1-3) greatly appreciated. Partners in Art: Field-trip to Glenstone Art Museum (Full, wait list only)

Trip date: November 7 from 10:30am-5pm; Ongoing registration. Join other DRA artists on this trip to the great new art museum "Glenstone" over in Potomac, MD. We have tickets for Noon that day and will be leaving about 10:30AM from a convenient location which will be announced later. We will leave Glenstone at 3PM for the trip back. The only cost will be for the bus - details to be given after you sign up. Spouses are welcome too. McDonald’s Spirit Night

Wednesday, November 20 from 4-7pm. Support Del Ray Artisans by attending Spirit Night at McDonald’s (1000 N Henry Street, Alexandria VA 22314). MCD Mateos McDonald’s is generously donating a percentage of sales between 4-7pm to our nonprofit. Call for Entry: Tangerine

Digital entries due: Monday, December 2 by midnight. Tangerine is a saturated, bold orange hue that describes the exterior of the delicious fruit. Like most other orange hues, tangerine is associated with energy, youth, and happiness. It is said to promote general wellness and emotional energy. Tangerine has been the love interest in songs; a tangerine dream is said to express the desire and ability to progress and prosper; and tangerine quartz stimulates the joyful energy of the inner child. What does tangerine mean to you? Open to all area artists and juried by Jane Hartman. The exhibit will run January 10 - February 2, 2020. Details at DelRayArtisans.org/2019/10/tangerine-cfe


Creature Comforts Art Exhibit at VCA Alexandria

Runs through January 26. The Creature Comforts art exhibit showcases Del Ray Artisans members’ artwork depicting animals that lift and fill our hearts and coincides with the winter holiday season in which creature comforts of all types are appreciated. The exhibit is through Del Ray Artisans’ Gallery Without Walls program at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital (2660 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314) and runs September 30, 2019 through January 26, 2020. CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 12 hours per year to support the organization and its mission.

Time-Sensitive Requests

  • Garden TLC Meet-Up
    On Saturday, November 9 from 9-11am, join our garden leaders: Pamela Underhill, Jenny Nicholson, and Jeff Lodge, as we work in the garden learning tips on weeding, trimming, etc. Wear appropriate clothing. If you want to bring your own tools, you may. Come join us (even if it's only an hour) to create a blooming success next Spring! MEMBERS: This task counts towards your annual membership volunteer hours. NON-MEMBERS: You are welcome to come help and learn too!
  • Volunteer at the annual DRA Holiday Market
    The market takes place in the gallery the first 3 weekends in December. Volunteers will work shifts at the DRA table to welcome visitors and sell DRA merchandise. Shifts:

    Fridays (12/6, 12/13, 12/20) 3:30-6:30pm setup and 6-9pm;
    Saturdays (12/7, 12/14, 12/21) 10:30am-1:30pm, 1pm-3:30pm, and 3-6pm;
    Sundays (12/8, 12/15, 12/22) 10:30am-1:30pm, 1pm-3:30pm, 3-6pm, and 6-8pm cleanup.

  • Editor of the Monthly Newsletter Needed
    The Well-Crafted Word is published online (PDF) and in print monthly, with input from curators, members, and the Board of Directors. The editor should have basic familiarity with word processing and publishing software (Adobe InDesign), as well as editing and design skills. If you don't know InDesign, the current editor can train you. For more information, contact editor Kathy Stoner at Newsletter@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Web Posting Volunteers Needed
    The web posting team needs you! We're looking for volunteers to post exhibit and event information to local media outlets. You can choose to take charge of one site (usually less than 15-20 minutes per post), or take on more than one. Web posting can be done from home at your convenience and is an easy way to earn volunteer hours. If interested, contact Kate at Post@DelRayArtisans.org

  • Curate/Coordinate an Exhibit outside the Gallery
    Del Ray Artisans' Gallery Without Walls program is seeking volunteers to coordinate exhibits with specific venues. The program is flexible to incorporate your ideas and value your time. Contact Monica at GWW@DelRayArtisans.org and Brittany at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Join the Curating Team!

Call for Artists: 2020 Open Call for Solo Exhibition

Deadline: Sunday, November 17. Target Gallery invites artists to apply for an open call for proposals for a solo exhibition for the summer of 2020. The individual or group associated with the chosen proposal will receive an exhibition at Target Gallery from June 6 - July 26, 2020. Honorarium: $3000 stipend. More Information.


Call for Artists: Images

Deadline: Sunday, November 17. Falls Church Arts Gallery has an open call for fine art photography. A concept statement is required with each image submitted and will be an important consideration in the acceptance process. More information.


Call for Entry: Hill Center Galleries 2020 Regional Juried Exhibition

Deadline: Wednesday, December 11. Open to Washington DC, Maryland, and Virginia Artists. Original hanging work, in any medium. Juried by Myrtis Bedolla, owner of Galerie Myrtis in Baltimore, MD. First place $1,000; Second Place $750; Third Place $500; and five Honorable Mention awards. Exhibition Dates: February 5-April 18, 2020. Opening Reception: February 5, 2020, 6:30-8:30pm.
