Art Inspired by the Twilight Zone Exhibit Opening Reception (Tonight!)
Friday, October 4 from 7-9pm. The original Twilight Zone took viewers to another dimension and explored humanity’s hopes, despairs, prejudices and more in metaphoric ways that conventional television could not. Art on the Avenue 2019 (Tomorrow!)
Along Mount Vernon Avenue in Del Ray on Saturday, October 5 from 10am-6pm, you’ll find Art on the Avenue, a multicultural arts festival celebrating our community’s diversity through the arts in Alexandria, Virginia. There will be entertainment for all ages, art activities, food and over 300 artists displaying and selling their work all along Mount Vernon Avenue. Come visit Del Ray Artisans tent to see artist demos, stop inside the gallery to see the exhibit, and shop from our members in the festival—buy local! Workshop: 6-Week Chair Yoga (Register today!)
Starting Tuesday, October 8 from 5-6pm. Balance. Explore. Learn. Join instructor Kay Sidahmed as she guides you through a 60-minute mostly-seated yoga practice. Each class will include the following elements: yoga philosophy, movement practice (asana), breath work (pranayama), meditation (dhyana). This class is suitable for everybody and inclusive of those with limited mobility. Classes are Tuesdays from 5-6pm from October 8 through November 19. McDonald’s Spirit Night
Thursday, October 17 from 4-7pm. Support Del Ray Artisans by attending Spirit Night at McDonald’s (1000 N Henry Street, Alexandria VA 22314). MCD Mateos McDonald’s is generously donating a percentage of sales between 4-7pm to our nonprofit. Call for Entry: $100 & Under (Members only)
Digital entries due: Sunday, October 20 by midnight. Del Ray Artisans is bringing back our popular exhibit from 2015 and 2017, inviting members to submit their best work — all priced at $100 and under. All media and all themes are welcome. Del Ray Artisans depends on member volunteers to ensure a smooth-running organization—including everything from gardening to curating exhibits. We need volunteers to fill the Board Executive and Directorship positions for 2020. At the Annual Membership meeting on October 24, 2019, members will be voting for candidates for these positions. Life Drawing - Open Sessions

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. All upcoming sessions may be found in this calendar view.

Need support reaching your art related goals? Join this collegial group of artists to share your goals and get feedback on artwork. All local artists, from beginners to professionals, and all skill levels are invited. Meetings include discussions on exhibit opportunities, the creative process and the local art scene. Participants may also bring in 1-3 artworks, in any medium, in any stage, to discuss goals, process, and ask for advice. Free, donations ($1-3) greatly appreciated. Annual Member Meeting, 2020 Board Elections
MEMBERS: The annual member meeting will be held on Thursday, October 24 at 7pm, and all members in good standing will vote on the nominations for the 2020 Board of Directors. Attend the meeting and enjoy the October exhibit, plus learn about the exciting 2020 exhibit schedule. If you cannot attend, we urge you to make a Proxy vote by Sunday, October 20. Workshop: “Stained Glass” Window Paintings
Saturday, October 26 from 10am-1pm. Instructor: Jonathan Ottke. Students will paint clear and translucent papers to mount on windows, creating a stained glass effect. Partners in Art: Field-trip to Glenstone Art Museum (Full,wait list only)
Trip date: November 7 from 10:30am-5pm; Ongoing registration. Join other DRA artists on this trip to the great new art museum “Glenstone” over in Potomac, MD. We have tickets for Noon that day and will be leaving about 10:30AM from a convenient location which will be announced later. We will leave Glenstone at 3PM for the trip back. The only cost will be for the bus - details to be given after you sign up. Spouses are welcome too. Creative Spark Book Club
Saturday, November 16 from 10:30am-12pm. We meet every other month on a Saturday morning to discuss readings by a variety of authors to help you stay inspired and motivated for your creative practice. The club is free and open to members and non-members who are interested in keeping their creative muse flowing and connecting with other like-minded creative people. Creature Comforts Art Exhibit at VCA Alexandria
Runs through January 26. The Creature Comforts art exhibit showcases Del Ray Artisans members’ artwork depicting animals that lift and fill our hearts and coincides with the winter holiday season in which creature comforts of all types are appreciated. The exhibit is through Del Ray Artisans’ Gallery Without Walls program at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital (2660 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314) and runs September 30, 2019 through January 26, 2020. Time-Sensitive Requests
- Seeking Garden Volunteers
On Saturday, October 12 from 8-11am come join our garden leaders: Pamela Underhill, Jenny Nicholson, and Jeff Lodge. We will be working in the garden learning tips on weeding, trimming, etc. Please wear appropriate clothing and bring bug spray. If you want to bring your own tools, you may. Once a month we will be meeting in the DRA garden to maintain the beauty of nature. Please come join us (even if it's for an hour) to fulfill your annual membership hours in this rewarding way.
- Web Posting Volunteers Needed
The web posting team needs you! We're looking for volunteers to post exhibit and event information to local media outlets. You can choose to take charge of one site (usually less than 15-20 minutes per post), or take on more than one. Web posting can be done from home at your convenience and is an easy way to earn volunteer hours. If interested, contact Kate at Post@DelRayArtisans.org

Alexandria Photo Contest
Deadline: Tuesday, October 15. The Alexandria Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities invites all photographers, both amateur and professional, to share your best original photos taken at any City of Alexandria park, center, program, or event. Photo submissions are being accepted through October 15 with public voting online November 1-15. All photos have the possibility of being used in publications and promotions, with photographer acknowledgment when feasible. View the complete Contest Rules and Information. Call for Artists: 2020 Emerging Artists
Deadline: Sunday, October 28. Target Gallery presents a new yearly exhibition featuring the work of 3-4 regional emerging artists. This exhibition spotlights new talent and the up-and-coming artistic innovators of the D.C. metropolitan area. Each artist will receive a $500 stipend. The selected artists will be chosen by a panel of 3 jurors, all art experts based in the D.C. metropolitan area. Eligibility: Artists should have no more than 5 years of experience as a professional exhibiting artist, live within D.C., Maryland, or Virginia, and have never had a solo exhibition in a professional gallery space (excluding BFA/MFA exhibitions). Entry fee $35. Exhibition Dates: April 10 - May 31, 2020. More Information.
Call for Artists: 2020 Open Call for Solo Exhibition
Deadline: Sunday, November 17. Target Gallery invites artists to apply for an open call for proposals for a solo exhibition for the summer of 2020. The individual or group associated with the chosen proposal will receive an exhibition at Target Gallery from June 6 - July 26, 2020. Honorarium: $3000 stipend. More Information
Call for Artists: Alexandria Waterfront Art & Craft Market
No Deadline; Rolling Applications. Riverside Taco Co is the newest Alexandria Restaurant Partners' food venue, located on the Alexandria Waterfront boardwalk, next to Torpedo Factory.
