Call for Entry: High Note (This weekend!)
Digital entries due: Sunday, August 11 by midnight. This exhibit will explore the connections between music and the mind. Music has a profound influence on us, shaping the way we feel and think. We often associate music with major life events. Artists are encouraged to submit works that capture the high notes from the soundtrack of their lives. Open to all area artists and juried by Britt Conley, a visual soundscape artist who paints and draws music, its physics, sound shapes, and concepts from her studio at the Workhouse Arts Center. Member Meeting and Annual Pie Contest
Sunday, August 18 from 5-7pm. You say Summer, we say BBQ! BBQ Indoor Picnic from our neighbor Pork Barrel BBQ. So show up hungry for our membership’s annual Pie Baking Contest meeting and social event! To enter the pie contest, you may bake a sweet or savory pie. Our group of judges will determine the PRIZE winner for each category. The meeting portion of the evening will cover the latest updates on exhibits and plans for upcoming opportunities and events. Call for Artists: Holiday Market 2019
Application deadline: Tuesday, September 3 by midnight. Applications for exhibitors in Del Ray Artisans' 24th Holiday Market to be held each weekend from December 6-22 are now open. Different artists from a variety of media categories will be selected for each weekend. Artists who apply by the deadline will be notified of acceptance by September 15. Thursday, August 15 from 7-8:30pm. Instructor: Dixie Pond. Learn the basic foundation steps of Brazilian zouk — a partner dance from Brazil characterized by flowy, circular movements — as well as timing and connection. Wear comfortable clothing. FREE; donations appreciated. (Register by August 14)
Saturday, August 17 from 10am-12pm. Instructor: Margaret Wohler. Learn how to set up a field sketch page, methods of observation of natural subjects, and draw plant structures and pollinators. (Register by August 15)
Thursday, August 22 from 6:30-8:30pm. Instructor: Sharon Burton. Do you feel that you have an inner artist or creative inside but need help coaxing it out? We will explore our core beliefs about being creative, address our negative self-talk as creatives, learn the benefits of affirmations, and how to create our own affirmations. (Register by August 18)
Saturday, August 24 from 10am-1pm. Instructor: Jonathan Ottke. Students will paint clear and translucent papers to mount on windows, creating a stained glass effect. Students will learn about painting, design, and luminosity. No experience necessary. Family-friendly workshop. (Register by August 20)
Sundays, August 25 from 2-5pm. Instructor: Joan Bickelhaupt. Practice quick interior or exterior drawings done in one sitting. The facilitator will suggest different compositional approaches to sketching in ink, pencil, or watercolor. This session's focus is Color Media – On the go. (Register by August 23)
Saturday, August 31 from 5-9pm. Instructor: Stacy Rausch. Learn how to recycle any cardboard board game into a one- of-a-kind, hand-bound, art book using traditional book binding methods and materials. (Register by August 28)

Need support reaching your art related goals? Join this collegial group of artists to share your goals and get feedback on artwork. All local artists, from beginners to professionals, and all skill levels are invited. Meetings include discussions on exhibit opportunities, the creative process and the local art scene. Participants may also bring in 1-3 artworks, in any medium, in any stage, to discuss goals, process, and ask for advice. Free, donations ($1-3) greatly appreciated. Life Drawing - Open Sessions Resume
- Wednesday, August 21 from 2-5pm (Short/Long Pose)
- Wednesday, August 21 from 6:30-9:30pm (Long Pose)
These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. All upcoming sessions may be found in this calendar view.

Thursday, September 5. Del Ray Artisans celebrates First Thursday, a Del Ray community event from 6-9pm along Mount Vernon Avenue from April through September. Rhythmic Strokes
Sunday, September 8 from 1-4pm. Explore the connections between music and visual art with instructor Jenny Nicholson. Experiment with various tools to create gestural lines, rhythmic strokes and expressive marks, capturing the essence of musical elements in our own individual interpretation. Fun with Musical Glass Decals
Saturday, Sept 14, 12-3pm and Thursday, Sept 19, 7-9pm. Create your own small fusible glass bowl or plate using glass decals of musical instruments and notes! Learn how to design an arrangement, apply the decals, and what happens to them in the kiln. Students will create their glass pieces on 9/14; then the instructor Betsy Mead will take them to her studio for kiln-firing. Call for Entry: 2020 Wall Calendar (Members Only)
Digital entries due: Saturday, September 14 by midnight. Members: Submit your best work to the 7th annual Del Ray Artisans' wall calendar! All entries are to be received digitally, and no physical pieces of art will be collected. There is no entry fee, no theme, and work previously shown at the gallery is acceptable. Sound Meditation with Dante
Saturday September 21 from 10-11:30am. Using crystal and Tibetan bowls, Dante Baker will lead a soothing asana and breathwork class to prepare the body for sound meditation. In the last hour, Dante will use sound vibration to build awareness and achieve a mentally clear, emotionally calm, and stable state. No experience necessary. Call for Entry: Art Inspired by the Twilight Zone
Digital entries due: Sunday, September 22 by midnight. The original Twilight Zone took viewers to another dimension. Created by Rod Serling, the show explored humanity’s hopes, despairs, prejudices and more in metaphoric ways that conventional television could not. Art Inspired by The Twilight Zone wants to bring this timeless show to life through art and photography. Uncommon Alexandria Art Exhibit at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital
Runs through September 29. The Uncommon Alexandria art exhibit at the VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital (2660 Duke St, Alexandria, VA 22314), features Del Ray Artisans members’ artwork. Come learn how at this presentation and Q & A session presented by the Washington Area Lawyers for the Arts (WALA) and the Copyright Alliance team up at the fantastic Entertainment Software Association headquarters to teach the basics of copyright. Call for Artists: My Queer Valentine
Deadline: Sunday, September 15. Target Gallery invites artists working in all visual media to apply to My Queer Valentine, a group exhibition that will explore love and relationships through LGBTQ+ artists perspectives. The themes and subject of artwork in this exhibition should explore non-heteronormative and non-binary relationships. The tone of the exhibition is playful, fun, and cheeky, so we encourage artists to apply with their perspectives on love (romantic or asexual) with this in mind. To celebrate this exhibition, Target Gallery will be hosting a special Valentine’s Day reception and event in partnership with local LGBTQ+ organizations. $35 for three submissions. Call for Artists: 2020 Emerging Artists
Deadline: Sunday, October 28. Target Gallery presents a new yearly exhibition featuring the work of 3-4 regional emerging artists. This exhibition spotlights new talent and the up-and-coming artistic innovators of the D.C. metropolitan area. Each artist will receive a $500 stipend. The selected artists will be chosen by a panel of 3 jurors, all art experts based in the D.C. metropolitan area. Eligibility: Artists should have no more than 5 years of experience as a professional exhibiting artist, live within D.C., Maryland, or Virginia, and have never had a solo exhibition in a professional gallery space (excluding BFA/MFA exhibitions). Entry fee $35. Exhibition Dates: April 10 - May 31, 2020. More Information.
Call for Artists: Art on the Avenue 2019
Open until all spaces are filled. Art on the Avenue is a multi-cultural arts festival celebrating our community’s diversity through the arts in the Del Ray neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia.
