The 2 Sides Project, Special Edition Art Exhibit

The 2 Sides Project, Special Edition Art Exhibit (Tonight!)

Reception: Friday, July 12, 7-9pm. The 2 Sides Project, Special Edition exhibit and documentary film screenings are at Del Ray Artisans gallery from July 11–14. Sons and daughters of those killed on opposite sides of the Vietnam War have come together for the first time. Experience their connection through still photos and the award-winning documentary film by Istrico Productions. Details at DelRayArtisans.org/event/2-sides-project/


Releasing Energy Blocks: A Gong Sound Meditation

The 2 Sides Project Documentary Film (This Weekend!)

PBS version: Saturday, July 13 from 7-8:30pm; and Feature-length film: Sunday, July 14 from 2-4pm. The 2 Sides Project (view trailer) is an award-winning documentary film that follows the unforgettable journey of six U.S. sons and daughters as they discover a country and a people with a shared history. There will be two showings of the documentary film, followed by Q & A. The PBS version is 56 minutes, and the feature-length film is 101 minutes. Call for Entry: Art in Meditation - The Chakras

Summer Youth Art Camp (Week Two) – Register by July 15

Del Ray Artisans invites children ages 8-14 to spend a week creating art with professional artist instruction. All artist supplies are provided. Week One is full, but spaces are available in Week Two (July 22-26). Registration is required (no walk-ins) by July 15. Camp is from 9am-3pm daily, with an exhibit of the artwork on the Saturday after camp from 1-3pm. Cost is $325/child. Scholarship support may be available. Gallery Hours and Youth Art Camp Show

For the second half of July, regular gallery hours are suspended; however, members of the public are invited to attend a special 2-hour Youth Art Camp Show on Saturday, July 20 (for Week One art) and Saturday, July 27 (for Week Two art) from 1-3pm to check out the students' work from their week of camp.

Make Photographic Art (This weekend!)

Saturday, July 13 from 10am-12pm. Instructor: Lori Lankford. Learn shooting and editing techniques to really make your summer photos pop. Experience using an art lens, freelensing, the effects of water, adding texture and much more. Bring a digital camera. (Register now; Walk-ins welcome, space permitting)


Creative Realities (This weekend!)

Saturday, July 13 from 2-3:30pm. Instructor: Seth Yavit. The instructor will share philosophies pertaining to creativity, art, and self-expression that were developed from interactions with people who are dealing with thought disorders. These creative, expressive, and art-related philosophies will offer new ways to look at creativity. (Register now; Walk-ins welcome, space permitting)


Sketchcrawling in the Summer

Sundays: July 28 and August 25 from 2-5pm. Instructor: Joan Bickelhaupt. Sign up for each session individually to practice quick interior or exterior drawings done in one sitting. The facilitator will suggest different compositional approaches to sketching in ink, pencil, or watercolor. Each session has a different focus: July 28 is People and Motion; and August 25 is Color Media. (Register by July 26)


Nature Journaling in Del Ray Artisans’ Garden

Saturday, August 17 from 10am-12pm. Instructor: Margaret Wohler. Learn how to set up a field sketch page, methods of observation of natural subjects, and draw plant structures and pollinators. (Register by August 15)


Creative Identity: The Art of Affirming Your Inner Creative

Thursday, August 22 from 6:30-8:30pm. Instructor: Sharon Burton. Do you feel that you have an inner artist or creative inside but need help coaxing it out? We will explore our core beliefs about being creative, address our negative self-talk as creatives, learn the benefits of affirmations, and how to create our own affirmations. Thursday, July 18 (Rain date; Gallery closed). Del Ray Artisans celebrates First Thursday, a Del Ray community event from 6-9pm along Mount Vernon Avenue from April through September.The theme for August is Aloha Thursday.


Fresh Meat Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Friday, August 2 from 7-9pm. Join us at Del Ray Artisans for a special exhibit featuring artwork by Del Ray Artisans' newest members from 2018-2019. The Fresh Meat exhibit highlights new faces and new techniques. Runs August 2-September 1. Details at DelRayArtisans.org/event/fresh-meat


Life Drawing - Open Sessions

  • Sunday, August 4 from 9:30-11:30am (Gesture)
  • Wednesday, August 7 from 2-5pm (Short/Long Pose)
  • Wednesday, August 7 from 6:30-9:30pm (Long Pose)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. All upcoming sessions may be found in this calendar view.

Need support reaching your art related goals? Join this collegial group of artists to share your goals and get feedback on artwork. All local artists, from beginners to professionals, and all skill levels are invited. Meetings include discussions on exhibit opportunities, the creative process and the local art scene. Participants may also bring in 1-3 artworks, in any medium, in any stage, to discuss goals, process, and ask for advice. Free, donations ($1-3) greatly appreciated. Workshop: Acrylics, Mixing Color for Realism

Saturday, August 10 from 11am-2pm. Mixing the right color can be challenging. Using acrylics, but applicable to all opaque paint mediums (acrylic, oil, gauche), Jeff Lodge will demonstrate how to reproduce the colors in a scene using tints, tones, shades and hues. Common problems and mistakes are covered. Students will create a small painting is created during the class. All skill levels welcome. Register by August 7 at DelRayArtisans.org/event/acrylics


Call for Entry: High Note

Digital entries due: Sunday, August 11 by midnight. This exhibit will explore the connections between music and the mind. Music has a profound influence on us, shaping the way we feel and think. We often associate music with major life events. Artists are encouraged to submit works that capture the high notes from the soundtrack of their lives. Open to all area artists and juried by Britt Conley, a visual soundscape artist who paints and draws music, its physics, sound shapes, and concepts from her studio at the Workhouse Arts Center. Uncommon Alexandria Art Exhibit at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital

Runs through September 29. The Uncommon Alexandria art exhibit at the VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital (2660 Duke St, Alexandria, VA 22314), features Del Ray Artisans members’ artwork.     The web posting team needs you! We're looking for a volunteer to post exhibit and event information to ArtDC.org. Web posting can be done from home at your convenience.   • Curate/Coordinate an Exhibit outside the Gallery

Call for Artists: Teach in Italy

Open until filled. Art Travel Italy, located in Italy, is seeking 2D artists to teach art workshops throughout the year at both their locations in Certaldo and Marsala, Sicily. Each workshop has 10-14 students. The studio space and field trips are ideal for painting, pastels, watercolor, drawing, and photography. The instructor is expected to help with recruiting interested students, along with advertising by Art Travel Italy. Open until all spaces are filled. Art on the Avenue is a multi-cultural arts festival celebrating our community’s diversity through the arts in the Del Ray neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia. This festival will be held rain or shine on October 5, 2019. The fee for show participation is $225. More information


Call for Artists: Alexandria Waterfront Art & Craft Market

No Deadline; Rolling Applications. Riverside Taco Co is the newest Alexandria Restaurant Partners' food venue, located on the Alexandria Waterfront boardwalk, next to Torpedo Factory.
