Summer Youth Art Camp

Summer Youth Art Camp – Register Now!

Discount now until June 1. Del Ray Artisans invites children ages 8-14 to spend a week creating art with professional artist instruction. All artist supplies are provided. Register for either Week One (July 15-19) or Week Two (July 22-26). Camp is from 9am-3pm daily, with an exhibit of the artwork on the Saturday after camp from 1-3pm. Making bangles

Workshop: Exploring and Making Bangles

Wednesday, May 29 from 6-8pm. Bracelets have been an important symbol for women in history for thousands of years to represent status. Earth Up Close: An Evening Around the World with Photographer Matthew Cicanese

Friday, May 31 from 7-8:30pm. Join National Geographic Explorer & Award-winning Documentary Photographer, Matthew Cicanese, for an exciting evening presentation of “Earth Up Close: An Evening Around the World”—a journey through time, space, and scale—as you shrink down and experience alien worlds that are right beneath your nose! Cicanese will give a lecture, followed by a Q&A. This event is FREE for Del Ray Artisans members; Non-members pay $15 at the door. Details at DelRayArtisans.org/event/earth-up-close

2019 Membership Drive

Now through May 31. Del Ray Artisans is hosting a special, invitational exhibit in August titled Fresh Meat. Each new member (joining between January 2018 and May 2019) is invited to enter three pieces of artwork for FREE. During our Membership Drive from February–May 2019, any current member who recruits a new member is also invited to enter one piece of artwork in this exhibit for FREE. Bring guests, family, friends, and neighbors to visit the gallery, attend opening receptions, or sign up for a workshop to become more familiar with our nonprofit arts organization. Re-Connecting Threads at VCA Alexandria

Re-Connecting Threads at VCA Alexandria

Runs through Sunday, June 2. The Re-Connecting Threads art exhibit spotlights artists’ traditional and non-traditional ways to manipulate fiber in art. Re-Connecting Threads features Del Ray Artisans members’ artwork through a Gallery Without Walls (GWW) program in partnership with the Veterinary Clinics of America Alexandria Animal Hospital (VCA Alexandria). Workshop: Meditation, Breath, and Sound with Dante

Saturday, June 8 from 10-11:30am. Using crystal and Tibetan bowls, Dante will lead a soothing asana and breathwork class to prepare the body for sound meditation. In the last hour, Dante will conclude with a soothing and unique exploration of the chakra energy points through sound vibration. Instructor: Dante Baker. Painting Flowers with Cut-Paper

June 1, June 8, and June 15 from 2-5pm (3-weekend class). Instructor: Tina McCoy. Learn how to create a beautiful flower painting using commercial and hand-painted papers. (Register by May 29)


Photos in the Garden

June 7 from 9am-1pm. Instructor: Lori Lankford. Bring your camera and meet at 9am at River Farm Gardens (7931 E Boulevard Dr, Alexandria, VA 22308). Take a photowalk looking for patterns, textures, reflections, shadows, architectural details, plants, insects and more. (Register by June 2)


Nature Journaling in Del Ray Artisans’ Garden

June 9 from 1-3pm from 10am-12noon. Instructor: Margaret Wohler. Learn about and observe the plant structures and pollinators, how to set up a field sketch page, and methods to learn about natural subjects through drawing. (Register by June 7)


SmartPhone Photography

June 16 from 10am-12pm. Instructor: Lisa McBride. Learn to use the camera that’s always with you! Bring your SmartPhone and go beyond taking a simple snapshot to creating a photograph that is an artistic expression unique to your vision. (Register by June 14)


Magic of Macro Photography

June 16 from 1-4pm. Instructor: Lori Lankford. It doesn’t take magic to get a great macro photograph. In this workshop students gain an introduction into the world of macro photography. Bring a fully charged camera. All cameras are welcome, however some techniques are only applicable with a digital camera. (Register by June 13)

Thursday, June 6. Del Ray Artisans celebrates First Thursday, a Del Ray community event from 6-9pm along Mount Vernon Avenue from April through September. These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. All upcoming sessions may be found in this calendar view.

Need support reaching your art related goals? Join this collegial group of artists to share your goals and get feedback on artwork. All local artists, from beginners to professionals, and all skill levels are invited. Meetings include discussions on exhibit opportunities, the creative process and the local art scene. Participants may also bring in 1-3 artworks, in any medium, in any stage, to discuss goals, process, and ask for advice. Free, donations ($1-3) greatly appreciated. Art in Meditation – The Chakras Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Friday, June 7 from 7-9pm. This exhibit, juried by contemporary artist Jeff Erickson, celebrates the seven energy centers of the body—the chakras. The exhibit has an associated Art-To-Go marketplace which will be featured during these neighborhood events: First Thursday on June 6 and Well Ray on June 22. The exhibit runs June 6-30. Urban Sketchbooking

Sunday, June 9 from 2-4pm. Urban Sketchbooking emphasizes storytelling that conveys a sense of place or a moment in time through drawings completed from direct observations. Drop-in meetings, during the afternoons of the second Sunday of each month. No need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us to produce still life, figure, or architecture subjects in your sketchbook. The fee for each 2-hour session is $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Workshop: Chakras Revealed

Thursday, June 13 from 6:30-8:30pm. Chakras are the energy centers of the body. The instructor will give an overview of the primary chakras and how they help in life, especially those in creative fields; then participants will practice asanas (exercises), pranayama (breathing technique), and meditation specific to a selected chakra. Workshop: Painting the Chakra Energies

Saturday, June 15 from 10am-12pm. Learn to use a variety of tools for layering and taking away acrylic paint to create works that represent the energies of the chakras. Digital entries due: Monday, June 17 by midnight. Each new Del Ray Artisans member who joined between January 2018 and May 2019 is invited to enter 3 pieces of artwork for FREE! Plus any current member who recruits a new member between February and May 2019 is invited to enter 1 piece of artwork for FREE. Workshop: Releasing Energy Blocks: A Gong Sound Meditation

Sunday, June 23 from 9:30-11am. This experiential workshop begins with an easy but effective breath exercise, followed by a guided meditation to energize the chakra system to release energetic blocks, stimulate circulation. No experience necessary. Please bring a yoga mat or blanket, as well as a cushion for seated meditation if needed. Instructor: Monique Durfuss. Workshop: Chair Yoga and Meditation

Tuesday, June 25 from 7–8:30pm. Balance body and mind in a mostly seated 75-minute yoga practice. Explore the mindful fusion of movement and breath as it guides us to a better understanding of our true self. This class is suitable for all levels and inclusive of those with limited mobility. Call for Proposals: 2020 Art Exhibits at Del Ray Artisans

Proposals due: Monday, July 1 by midnight. Del Ray Artisans is currently soliciting show proposals for 2020. Del Ray Artisans strives to offer exhibits that reach a broad and diverse audience, encourage artistic development, and represent a wide variety of art forms. The Exhibit Proposal Committee will review all proposals and make recommendations to the Board for final approval.   • Join the Curating Team!

Call for Artists: Art on the Avenue 2019

Open until all spaces are filled. Art on the Avenue is a multi-cultural arts festival celebrating our community’s diversity through the arts in the Del Ray neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia. Call for Artists: VisArts: Frame & Frequency V

Deadline: Friday, June 7. Frame & Frequency is an ongoing International Video Art Screening Series presented by VisArts in Rockville, MD, that highlights artists whose new media, experimental film, and video works explore contemporary visual culture, and presents an intimate panorama of the variety of video art. Video, sound art, film, and new media work will be accepted: experimental, documentary, animation, narrative, non-narrative, multimedia, virtual reality, augmented reality, net art, interactive media, etc. All foreign language moving image artworks must have English subtitles. $5 application fee.
