Workshop: Introduction to Acrylic Painting (This Weekend!)

Saturday, March 9 from 1-4pm. This workshop will cover the basic principles for working with acrylic paints, including paint and tool selection, surface preparation, mixing and more. Participants will perform some basic color, shade, and tint mixing. Instructor Jeff Lodge will demonstrate mixing, application techniques as well as some special tips and tricks with this medium. Urban Sketchbooking (This Weekend!)

Sunday, March 10 from 2-4pm. Urban Sketchbooking emphasizes storytelling that conveys a sense of place or a moment in time through drawings completed from direct observations. Drop-in meetings, during the afternoons of the second Sunday of each month. No need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us to produce still life, figure, or architecture subjects in your sketchbook. The fee for each 2-hour session is $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Workshop: Calligraphy and the Creative Stroke

Saturday, March 16 from 1-4pm. Learn the basic strokes of script calligraphy using a pointed pen and ink, as well as a brush marker. Bring a short saying or quote to work with. Instructor: Jenny Nicholson. Cost: $45 members / $55 non-members; plus $15 supply fee. The supply fee covers penholder and nib, brush pen, paper, and handouts for you to take home. Call for Entry: (No) Comfort Zone

Digital entries due: Sunday, March 17 by midnight. This exhibit will showcase art that reflects people, places and things that are in and/or out of your comfort zone. (No) Comfort Zone is a Del Ray Artisans exhibit open only to members and local area high school students. If you are not a member, you may join Del Ray Artisans now to enter. Show runs April 5-28. For the Artist Art Exhibit

Runs through Sunday, March 31. The For The Artist exhibit features artworks that Del Ray Artisans members have always dreamed of creating. The diversity of expression and creativity in this exhibit is inspiring to artists and art appreciators alike. Two and three-dimensional works, paintings, mixed media, and photography are showcased. These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Need support reaching your art related goals? Join this collegial group of artists to share your goals and get feedback on artwork. All local artists, from beginners to professionals, and all skill levels are invited. Meetings include discussions on exhibit opportunities, the creative process and the local art scene. Participants may also bring in 1-3 artworks, in any medium, in any stage, to discuss goals, process, and ask for advice. Free, donations ($1-3) greatly appreciated. Open late on First Thursday

Beginning April 4. Del Ray Artisans celebrates First Thursday, a Del Ray community event from 6-9pm along Mount Vernon Avenue from April through September. The gallery is open until 9pm on First Thursday. Come get a sneak peek of the next exhibit!

Youth Art Camp – Registration is now Open!

Early bird discount until June 1. Del Ray Artisans invites young campers to spend a week creating art with professional artist instruction. All artist supplies are provided. Register for either Week One (July 15-19) or Week Two (July 22-26). Camp is from 9am-3pm daily, with an exhibit of the artwork on the Saturday after camp from 1-3pm. Call for Artists: Art on the Avenue 2019

Deadline: April 1 for early application. Art on the Avenue is a multi-cultural arts festival celebrating our community’s diversity through the arts in the Del Ray neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia. This festival will be held rain or shine on October 5, 2019. Early application to Art on the Avenue is due April 1, 2019. The fee for show participation is $200 if you apply by April 1st and $225 after April 1st. More information

Call for Artists: Bella Strada Chalk Festival

Saturday, May 11 from 10am-3pm. The Del Ray Montessori School in Alexandria is hosting fourth annual La Bella Strada, an Italian Street Chalk Festival along Del Ray's Mt. Vernon Avenue. It will take place on May 11, 2019 from 10am-3pm and will featuring local artists who create large square masterpieces along the avenue. Interested artists should include contact information, and a sample of chalk artwork and email bellastrada@thedelraymontessorischool.com. More information.
