Urban Sketchbooking

Urban Sketchbooking (This weekend!)

Sunday, February 10 from 2-4pm. Urban Sketchbooking emphasizes storytelling that conveys a sense of place or a moment in time through drawings completed from direct observations. Drop-in meetings, during the afternoons of the second Sunday of each month. No need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us to produce still life, figure, or architecture subjects in your sketchbook. The fee for each 2-hour session is $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Workshop: Making Cards (This weekend!)

Sunday, February 10 from 6-8 pm. Interested in making hand-made greeting cards but not sure where to start? Then attend this workshop to get that start! Tracy will walk you through her process of making one-of-a-kind greeting cards using various materials (many of them from unlikely sources). The supply fee covers all the materials used in this workshop for up to 4 cards (and envelopes) to take home with you. Cost: $30 members / $40 non-members; plus $10 supply fee. Found It – Make It – Wear It

Workshop: Found It – Make It – Wear It

Tuesday, February 12 from 7-9 pm. Do you have partial jewelry sets that you’d like to fix? Or pendants that could be attached to necklaces? Maybe you even have pieces that you want to repurpose into some wearable art? If so, this workshop is for you! Learn the basics of making jewelry while assembling a necklace out of your own “found” materials. Search through your old jewelry and find some items to turn into a new piece for you or someone else. Tamara will teach you the basics of jewelry-making while working with you to assemble your necklace. Cost: $40 members / $50 non-members; plus $15 supply fee. Digital entries due: Saturday, February 16 by midnight. Complete that piece that has been bugging you, calling to you, and has been on your New Year’s resolution list several years running. Although this is a thematically open show, we challenge artists to reach into that wish list and create the special piece you’ve dreamed of doing. Open only to Del Ray Artisans members. Art Swap

Member Meeting & Art Supplies Swap

Sunday, February 17 from 4-6 pm. Our winter All Member Meeting is DRA’s traditional opportunity for members to swap unused art supplies for “new to you” supplies from fellow members. Always popular at DRA, this Art Supplies Swap is a great opportunity to chat about making art. Please bring your old supplies with you to the meeting. Light refreshments will be served as we learn about the latest DRA news, and view the supplies. We will then pull names from a hat to take turns choosing “new” supplies! Playing with Resin<strong></strong>

Workshop: Playing with Resin

Tuesday, February 19 from 6-9 pm. Come play with resin in a safe environment – learn the ins & outs of mixing resin and using it in your artwork —as an adhesive, a covering, or the main medium. There’s lots of creative time during this 3-hour workshop … no need to rush which is one of the first lessons in using resin! You’ll leave your finished masterpiece(s) to set at the gallery at the end of the workshop, but you’ll be able to pick them up during gallery hours later in the week. New Beginnings

New Beginnings Art Exhibit

Runs through Sunday, February 24. The EPA estimates 75% of waste is recyclable, but only 30% is. Visit Del Ray Artisans gallery to see artwork created by reuse. These creations incorporate at least half of their materials from either found objects, recycled materials or older works of art. Details at DelRayArtisans.org/event/new-beginnings

Partners in Art

Monday, March 4 from 2-4pm. Need support reaching your art related goals? Join this collegial group of artists to share your goals and get feedback on artwork. Monthly meetings include discussions on exhibit opportunities, the creative process and the local art scene. Artist can bring 1-3 works - complete or in progress - for feedback. Workshop: Introduction to Acrylic Painting

Saturday, March 9 from 1-4pm. This workshop will cover the basic principles for working with acrylic paints, including paint and tool selection, surface preparation, mixing and more. Participants will perform some basic color, shade, and tint mixing. Instructor Jeff Lodge will demonstrate mixing, application techniques as well as some special tips and tricks with this medium. Workshop: Calligraphy and the Creative Stroke

Saturday, March 16 from 1-4pm. Learn the basic strokes of script calligraphy using a pointed pen and ink, as well as a brush marker. Bring a short saying or quote to work with. Instructor: Jenny Nicholson. Cost: $45 members / $55 non-members; plus $15 supply fee. The supply fee covers penholder and nib, brush pen, paper, and handouts for you to take home. Partners in Art Evening

Tuesday, March 26 from 7-9pm. All local artists, from beginners to professionals, are invited. We discuss the local art scene, exhibit opportunities, share artistic goals, techniques, media, and creative processes. Enjoy the collegiality and support of your fellow artists! Participants may also bring in 1-3 artworks, in any medium, in any stage, to discuss goals, process, and ask for advice. Free, donations ($1-3) greatly appreciated.     The web posting team needs you! We're looking for a volunteer to post exhibit and event information to Northern Virginia Magazine and/or Eventful Culture. Call for Artists: AlexRenew Public Art Residency

Qualification submittals due February 10. The City of Alexandria’s Public Art Program, in collaboration with Alexandria Renew Enterprises (AlexRenew), is launching the AlexRenew Public Art Residency and is seeking an artist for the first residency, which runs May 2019 - October 2020. This residency is an opportunity for artists to engage deeply with the authority that treats wastewater for the City and its initiative to improve the health of our waterways. The selected artist will have an all-inclusive budget of $30,000 and will be engaged for 18 months. Details: AlexRenew Public Art Residency


Exhibitors wanted: 2019 Sidewalk Show Sale

Deadline: March 8. The Sidewalk Art Show takes place annually in Roanoke, Virginia on the downtown streets near the Taubman Museum of Art. This annual benefit infuses downtown Roanoke with energy, excitement, and creativity, attracting 10,000 shoppers over the weekend! Scheduled for June 1-2, 2018. Submission categories include: original paintings, prints, watercolors, etchings, mixed media, photography, fine craft and sculpture. More information


Call for Artists: Art on the Avenue 2019

Deadline: April 1 for early application. Art on the Avenue is a multi-cultural arts festival celebrating our community’s diversity through the arts in the Del Ray neighborhood in Alexandria, Virginia. This festival will be held rain or shine on October 5, 2019. Early application to Art on the Avenue is due April 1, 2019. The fee for show participation is $200 if you apply by April 1st and $225 after April 1st. More information
