Urban Sketchbooking

Urban Sketchbooking (This Weekend!)

Sunday, November 11 from 2-4pm. Urban Sketchbooking emphasizes storytelling that conveys a sense of place or a moment in time through drawings completed from direct observations. Drop-in meetings, during the afternoons of the second Sunday of each month. No need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us to produce still life, figure, or architecture subjects in your sketchbook. The fee for each 2-hour session is $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Card Making Party

Card Making Party

Monday, November 12 from 6-9pm. Gather around our crafting tables at the gallery and create greeting cards you won’t find anywhere else. Each card becomes its own work of art as participants “treasure hunt” through papers, images, supplies, and ephemera for embellishing. These card-making parties turn out to be a “creative jam session” for all who attend. You have the option to donate the cards made to DRA or a small monetary contribution for time and supplies. Hand Stitch Third Thursday at Artistic Artifacts

Thursday, November 15 from 6-8pm. Join Judy Gula at Artistic Artifacts (4750 Eisenhower Ave., Alexandria, VA 22304) for this learning opportunity focusing on hand stitching techniques and make and take projects. This event will focus on Silk Ribbon Embroidery. Cost: $15/person, includes light refreshments and use of provided products and materials. Needle Felted Jewelry

Workshop: Needle Felted Jewelry

Saturday, November 17 from 1-4pm. Learn the basics of how to create 3D Needle Felted Jewelry, as well as basic jewelry techniques. We will also explore using other materials such as beads, charms, and thread to add to our needle felted jewelry pieces. Instructor: Brittany Gabel. "A Christmas Carol" Theater Night at The Little Theatre of Alexandria

Tuesday, December 11 from 6:30-9:30pm. Join us for a special evening at The Little Theatre of Alexandria. Del Ray Artisans is hosting a reception for The Little Theatre of Alexandria’s performance of “A Christmas Carol” on Tuesday, December 11, 2018. Tickets are just $45 each. All proceeds support Del Ray Artisans nonprofit. Tickets for this special Theater Night will only be sold through Del Ray Artisans. Tickets can be purchased at the gallery or online. Partners in Art Evening

Tuesday, November 20 from 7-9pm. All local artists, from beginners to professionals, are invited. We discuss the local art scene, exhibit opportunities, share artistic goals, techniques, media, and creative processes. Enjoy the collegiality and support of your fellow artists! Participants may also bring in 1-3 artworks, in any medium, in any stage, to discuss goals, process, and ask for advice. Free, donations ($1-3) greatly appreciated. Connecting Threads Art Exhibit

Runs through Sunday, November 25. The Connecting Threads art exhibit celebrates fiber and how it connects us. The exhibit features the work of regional artists showcasing traditional and non-traditional ways to manipulate fiber and highlights narratives where textiles and fiber trigger nostalgia. 23rd Annual Fine Art & Fine Craft Holiday Market

Nov 30-Dec 2, Dec 7-9, and Dec 14-16; Fridays 6-9pm, Saturdays & Sundays 11am-6pm. The Holiday Market offers unique handmade fine arts and fine crafts from local artists (including pottery/ceramics, photography, jewelry, fiber, paper crafts, and glass). There are different artists each weekend and admission is free. In addition, DRA merchandise and 2019 wall calendars will be available for purchase. Artists are donating a percentage of their sales to help support Del Ray Artisans’ mission to promote art for the benefit of artists and the community. Life Drawing - Open Sessions

  • Wednesday, December 12 from 1-2pm - Holiday Party!
  • Wednesday, December 12 from 2-5pm (Short/Long Pose)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Call for Entry: Faces

Digital entries due: Sunday, December 16 by midnight. Portraits show the life a person has lived, the joy a person emanates, the wisdom gained through years of living, and focuses on the soul of the person. This exhibit is for the fresh face of a two-year old toddler or the lived-in face of an octogenarian, and all those living in between. Full length portraits are encouraged, but this exhibit centers on faces, however the artist portrays them, whether realistic, impressionistic, surreal, or abstract. Monday, January 7 from 2-4pm. Need support reaching your art related goals? Join this collegial group of artists to share your goals and get feedback on artwork. Monthly meetings include discussions on exhibit opportunities, the creative process and the local art scene. Artist can bring 1-3 works - complete or in progress - for feedback. Workshop: The Art of Business

Saturday, January 12 from 10am-Noon. This workshop will answer your questions on income, sales, and local Virginia county taxes. In a lecture and discussion format, Rita Schooley, CPA, will go over the general points of tax law and then answer questions. We will also discuss general aspects of business from an artist’s viewpoint, such as recordkeeping, record retention, filing tax returns, estimated tax payments, and navigating the tax maze. Additionally, participants can bring all tax- and business-related questions for consideration. Rita will be available after the session for about half an hour to answer questions privately. Workshop: Creative Revival – 12 Weeks to Nurture & Unblock Your Creativity via The Artist’s Way

Saturday, January 26 from 2-4pm (recurring weekly for 12 weeks). Do you need support to make your creative dreams a reality? You are cordially invited to join the Creative Revival Artist’s Way Circle, a facilitated group by artist and curator Sharon Burton that will meet once a week for 12 weeks as we go through The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. The program is focused on supporting relationships in removing artistic blocks and fostering confidence. Cost: $100 for DRA members and $125 for non-members, plus $25 materials fee (or bring your own “The Artist’s Way Starter Kit”). Space is limited. Bringing Words to Life Exhibit at VCA Alexandria

Runs through Sunday, January 27. Whether written, spoken, or sung, words evoke emotion and meaning that stay with us long after they are finished. Bringing Words to Life pairs a line from an artist's favorite song, poem, book, or speech with the artist's visual interpretation of that quote.   • Volunteer at the annual DRA Holiday Market
    The market takes place in the gallery the first 3 weekends in December. Volunteers will work shifts at the DRA table to welcome visitors and sell DRA merchandise. Shifts:

    Fridays (11/30, 12/7, 12/14) 3:30-6:30pm setup and 6-9pm;
    Saturdays (12/1, 12/8, 12/15) 10:30am-1:30pm, 1pm-3:30pm, and 3-6pm;
    Sundays (12/2, 12/9, 12/16) 10:30am-1:30pm, 1pm-3:30pm, 3-6pm, and 6-8pm cleanup.

  • Web Posting Volunteer Needed
    The web posting team needs you! We're looking for a volunteer to post exhibit and event information to Northern Virginia Magazine and/or Eventful Culture. Frame & Frequency is an ongoing International Video and Sound Art Exchange program presented concurrently at VisArts in our In(Site) Project Gallery in Rockville, MD and at PLECTO Galeria in Medellín, Colombia, opening December 7, 2018.
