Del Ray Artisans is looking for members to serve on the Board of Directors in 2019. Board positions are 1-year terms from January 1-December 31. The open positions are:

 • Assistant Treasurer: Act together with Treasurer
 • Grants & Sponsorship: Oversee grant proposals
 • Outreach: Community involvement
 • Volunteers: Recruitment & scheduling of volunteers
 • Youth Programs: Responsible for art camp & educational activities

Connecting Threads

Call for Entry: Connecting Threads

Digital entries due: Saturday, October 13 by midnight. Fiber art communicates some sort of message, emotion, or meaning and goes beyond the literal definition of the materials. This exhibit focuses on fiber art, but is open to all mediums. The curators are seeking artwork that features fiber and textiles as a major component in construction and/or as a part of the subject matter. This exhibit celebrates fiber and how it is used to connect us to the stories of our lives. Open to all area artists. Artistic Artifacts is sponsoring 4 artist awards. Show runs November 2-25. Leather Mask Making

Workshop: Leather Mask Making

Tuesday, October 16 from 6-10pm. Learn basic and intermediate leather working skills while creating a custom fitted mask to take home. We'll cover everything from pattern tracing and leather cutting to embossing designs using traditional tools. Students will have access to a variety of design stamps that will give them a chance to personalize their project. Instructor: Lynn Fernandez. Cost: $55 for members and $65 for non-members, plus a $20 supply fee. Register by October 14 at DelRayArtisans.org/event/leather-mask-making-2


Leather Work

Leather Working Open Studio Night

Thursday, October 18 from 6-10pm. Lynn Fernandez will provide a wide variety of leather working tools and dyes, as well as guidance on projects during this 4-hour open session. Students may bring their own cased leather or buy leather directly from Lynn. Prerequisite: Must have taken a previous leather working workshop. Cost: $30/member and $40/non-member, plus $5 supply fee (use of tools and dyes). Register by October 16 at DelRayArtisans.org/event/leather-open-studio-2


Smart Phone Photography

Smart Phone Photography MeetUp

Saturday, October 20 from 10am-12pm. Learn to use a smart phone camera and review the settings for optimal image capture, pro tips and techniques of exposure, composition, and focus that produce the best results. Using our phone cameras, we’ll explore the Del Ray neighborhood and see what it has to offer from architecture, street art/graffiti, abstract sculptures, animals and colorful people interacting. We’ll find endless photographic opportunities perfect for mobile photography. Instructor: Lisa McBride. Cost: $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Partners in Art Evening

Tuesday, October 23 from 7-9pm. All local artists, from beginners to professionals, are invited. We discuss the local art scene, exhibit opportunities, share artistic goals, techniques, media, and creative processes. Enjoy the collegiality and support of your fellow artists! Participants may also bring in 1-3 artworks, in any medium, in any stage, to discuss goals, process, and ask for advice. Free, donations ($1-3) greatly appreciated. These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Workshop: Manifest Your Creative Goals

Saturday, October 27 from 10am-12pm. As artists it can be hard to set goals to making your creative dreams a reality when you have distractions or find yourself procrastinating. This workshop will explore how to help you, the emerging or seasoned artist, get started on reaching your creative goals! Instructor: Sharon Burton. Cost: $35 for DRA members and $50 for non-members. Symmetry Photography Exhibit

Runs through Sunday, October 28. Del Ray Artisans and Union 206 Studio present “Symmetry – Balance in an Asymmetrical World” showcasing artists’ visions of symmetry. The camera, used as a tool, reveals the artist’s vision and produces a personal – typically evocative or atmospheric, yet balanced – statement. The photography exhibit runs October 5-28, 2018. Partners in Art

Monday, November 5 from 2-4pm. Need support reaching your art related goals? Join this collegial group of artists to share your goals and get feedback on artwork. Monthly meetings include discussions on exhibit opportunities, the creative process and the local art scene. Artist can bring 1-3 works - complete or in progress - for feedback. Sit & Stitch Gathering

Monday, November 5 from 6-8pm. Join us for an evening of stitching! Bring your hand stitching project – crochet, knitting, embroidery, mending – and spend a few hours in the company of other stitchers. Don’t stitch? Join us anyway! We will share our thoughts on the joy of stitching, and we might just get you interested in learning something new. FREE; walk-in and have fun. Card Making Party

Monday, November 12 from 6-9pm. Gather around our crafting tables at the gallery and create greeting cards you won’t find anywhere else. Each card becomes its own work of art as participants “treasure hunt” through papers, images, supplies, and ephemera for embellishing. These card-making parties turn out to be a “creative jam session” for all who attend. You have the option to donate the cards made to DRA or a small monetary contribution for time and supplies. Hand Stitch Third Thursday at Artistic Artifacts

Thursday, November 15 from 6-8pm. Join Judy Gula at Artistic Artifacts (4750 Eisenhower Ave., Alexandria, VA 22304) for this learning opportunity focusing on hand stitching techniques and make and take projects. This event will focus on Silk Ribbon Embroidery. Cost: $15/person, includes light refreshments and use of provided products and materials. Workshop: Needle Felted Jewelry

Saturday, November 17 from 1-4pm. Learn the basics of how to create 3D Needle Felted Jewelry, as well as basic jewelry techniques. We will also explore using other materials such as beads, charms, and thread to add to our needle felted jewelry pieces. Instructor: Brittany Gabel. “A Christmas Carol” Theater Night at The Little Theatre of Alexandria

Tuesday, December 11 from 6:30-10pm. Join us for a special evening at The Little Theatre of Alexandria. Del Ray Artisans is hosting a reception for The Little Theatre of Alexandria’s performance of “A Christmas Carol” on Tuesday, December 11, 2018. Tickets are just $45 each. All proceeds support Del Ray Artisans nonprofit. Tickets for this special Theater Night will only be sold through Del Ray Artisans. Tickets can be purchased at the gallery or online. Workshop: Creative Revival – 12 Weeks to Nurture & Unblock Your Creativity via The Artist’s Way

Saturday, January 26 from 2-4pm (recurring weekly for 12 weeks). Do you need support to make your creative dreams a reality? You are cordially invited to join the Creative Revival Artist’s Way Circle, a facilitated group by artist and curator Sharon Burton that will meet once a week for 12 weeks as we go through The Artist’s Way by Julia Cameron. The program is focused on supporting relationships in removing artistic blocks and fostering confidence. Cost: $100 for DRA members and $125 for non-members, plus $25 materials fee (or bring your own “The Artist’s Way Starter Kit”). Space is limited. Bringing Words to Life Exhibit at VCA Alexandria

Runs through Sunday, January 27. Whether written, spoken, or sung, words evoke emotion and meaning that stay with us long after they are finished. Bringing Words to Life pairs a line from an artist's favorite song, poem, book, or speech with the artist's visual interpretation of that quote. Time-Sensitive Requests

  • Volunteer at the annual DRA Holiday Market
    The market takes place in the gallery the first 3 weekends in December. Volunteers will work shifts at the DRA table to welcome visitors and sell DRA merchandise. Shifts:

    Fridays (11/30, 12/7, 12/14) 3:30-6:30pm setup and 6-9pm;
    Saturdays (12/1, 12/8, 12/15) 10:30am-1:30pm, 1pm-3:30pm, and 3-6pm;
    Sundays (12/2, 12/9, 12/16) 10:30am-1:30pm, 1pm-3:30pm, 3-6pm, and 6-8pm cleanup.

  • Web Posting Volunteer Needed
    The web posting team needs you! We're looking for a volunteer to post exhibit and event information to Northern Virginia Magazine and/or Eventful Culture. Grants Director

  • Wanted: Grants Director
    DRA is looking for a Grants Director for 2018/2019. This volunteer position on DRA's Board of Directors has a two-year commitment. Duties include working with the president and Treasurer, preparing and submitting grants proposals annually to the City of Alexandria and the Commonwealth of Virginia, and following up on prior years' grants with final reports. This is an excellent opportunity to liaise with other Board members, volunteers, and City officials and to learn about the inner workings of DRA. Call for Entry: 2019 Solo Exhibition at Target Gallery

Frame & Frequency is an ongoing International Video and Sound Art Exchange program presented concurrently at VisArts in our In(Site) Project Gallery in Rockville, MD and at PLECTO Galeria in Medellín, Colombia, opening December 7, 2018. Video, sound art (up to 8 channels), film, and new media work will be accepted: experimental, documentary, animation, narrative, non-narrative, multimedia, virtual reality, augmented reality, net art, interactive media, etc. More information
