Member Meeting / Benefit Program: Talk on Botanical Art and Display by Mary Monsma and Alice Tangerini

Tuesday, May 22 at 7pm. Join us at this member meeting for a special presentation by guest speakers Mary Monsma and Alice Tangerini, members of the Guild of Natural Science Illustrators (GNSI) and from the Smithsonian, Department of Botany, who specialize in botanical illustration. The lecture will be on the history of botanical art and current methods of producing botanicals within a museum context. Mary and Alice will show slides of their process for drawing from dried specimens and an overview of how plants are collected for the Smithsonian, as well as display samples of current work and historical pieces. Note: The GNSI is celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. The GNSI-DC chapter meets every month for a presentation at the Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum.

Atomic Dog Art Exhibit

Runs through Sunday, May 27. Del Ray Artisans and The Dog Store present Atomic Dog, an exhibit inspired by man's best friend. This fun and heart-warming show features photography, painting, sculpture, and inventive mixed media of all kinds. Wanderlust

Wanderlust Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Friday, June 1 from 7-9pm. Whether you’re floating through the Arctic fjords in Norway, wandering the crowded streets of Mumbai, savoring a sweet, chewy macaroon in a small Parisian cafe, or taking in the awe-inspiring beauty of the Grand Canyon… the world is full of rich experiences that bridge cultures and help us cultivate connections that go beyond borders. The Wanderlust art exhibit is about celebrating diversity and sharing beauty found in every corner of this world, both near and far. The exhibit runs June 1-24, 2018. Youth Art Camp

Youth Art Camp – Registration is now Open!

Early bird discount until June 1. Del Ray Artisans invites young campers to spend a week creating art with professional artist instruction. All artist supplies are provided. Register for either Week One (July 16-20) or Week Two (July 23-27). Camp is from 9am-3pm daily, with an exhibit of the artwork on the Saturday after camp from 1-3pm. Life Drawing - Open Sessions

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Partners in Art

Monday, June 4 from 2-4pm. Looking for a chance to get together with other creative people to discuss art and exchange ideas? Then come to a meeting of our cooperatively led Partners in Art group. First Thursday

Thursday, June 7 from 6-9pm. Del Ray Artisans celebrates First Thursday, a Del Ray community event from 6-9pm along Mount Vernon Avenue from April through September. The theme for June is "Unmask Your Superhero." Come to Del Ray Artisans gallery to get a sneak peek of the upcoming art exhibit, Wanderlust.


Playing with Resin Workshop

Sunday, June 10 from 6-9pm. Come play with resin in a safe environment. Learn the ins & outs of mixing resin and using it in your artwork—as an adhesive, a covering, or the main medium. You’ll leave your finished masterpiece(s) to set at the gallery at the end of the workshop, but you’ll be able to pick them up during gallery hours later in the week. Reinvention at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital

Runs through June 10. Del Ray Artisans presents Reinvention, a Gallery Without Walls exhibit, with member artists reinventing old artwork or themselves in 2-dimensional pieces to celebrate the new renovations at the VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital, 2660 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314. Wanderlust: How to Make Art While Traveling Workshop

Saturday, June 16 from 1-5pm. Traveling can provide wonderful inspiration for creating stunning pieces of written and visual art that convey a story. This practical, hands-on workshop will focus on five ways to make art on the road while still traveling light. Combining discussion and hands-on instruction, the first hour of the workshop will provide participants with an overview of 5 mediums for creating and/or preserving and sharing art while on the road, without getting weighed down by a lot of supplies. Partners in Art Evenings

Tuesday, June 19 from 7-9pm. All local artists, from beginners to professionals, are invited. We discuss the local art scene, exhibit opportunities, share artistic goals, techniques, media, and creative processes. Enjoy the collegiality and support of your fellow artists! Participants may also bring in 1 or 2 artworks, in any medium, in any stage, to discuss goals, process, and ask for advice. We use the positive and successful format developed in our afternoon sessions for our feedback procedure. This program is free of charge and open to all. Donations ($1–3) greatly appreciated. Grown Ups Art Camp 2018 – Register Now!

Runs from June 30-July 13. Del Ray Artisans' Grown-Ups Art Camp offers the chance to customize your own “art camp” this summer—just register for the art-filled workshops taught by local artists that fit into your schedule. Nearly 20 workshops to choose from include: techniques in painting, smart-phone photography, polymer clay, mixed media, book-making, journaling/ drawing, jewelry-making, leather-working, paper and fiber art, sculpture, and more. Call for Proposals: 2019 Art Exhibits at Del Ray Artisans

Proposals due: Sunday, July 1 by midnight. Del Ray Artisans is currently soliciting show proposals for 2019. Del Ray Artisans strives to offer exhibits that reach a broad and diverse audience, encourage artistic development, and represent a wide variety of art forms. The show proposal committee will review all proposals and make recommendations to the Board for final approval. Call for Entry: Eat, Drink, and Be Merry National Ceramic Show

Digital entries due: Sunday, August 5. This is a hybrid art exhibit that combines a national ceramic show, focused on vessels for the dining table and food, with a regional non-ceramic show. This call for entry is for the national ceramic show. Ceramic art must be three-dimensional vessels for the table (e.g., cups, bowls, plates) made primarily from clay and 100% functional with food-safe glazes. Entries should not exceed 10" high and 24" wide or deep and not weigh over 10 pounds. Cup, bowl, or plate sets are eligible. Accepted ceramics that are being shipped should be received by August 24. Digital entries due: Sunday, August 19. This exhibit celebrates the way that food and drink brings people together and joy to our lives. Artwork should be inspired by food, real or metaphorical that nourishes the viewer or highlight the rituals and places that celebrate the social gathering around sustenance. Eat, Drink, and Be Merry is a hybrid art exhibit that combines a national ceramic show with a regional non-ceramic two- and three-dimensional show. This call for entry is for the regional non-ceramic exhibit. Artwork receiving for accepted non-ceramic artwork is on Sunday, September 2 and Monday, September 3 from 6-8pm. Call for Artists: Pride Art Show at Palette 22

Deadline: Midnight on May 18. Palette 22 is a creative dining experience in an art-filled space. From the outside in, art is everywhere at Palette 22. This exhibit will be displayed concurrently with the artists-in-residence artwork for June. This exhibit is open to all area artists who support the LGBTQIA+ community. There is no theme - only proud support of Pride Month and beyond. 2018 Courthouse Art on the Plaza Market

Call for Artists: Art on the Avenue 2018

Apply by June 1 to be in the first round of judging. Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists and is known for high quality artwork. All work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. Standard booth rate is $210. The event is Saturday, October 6 from 10am-6pm. Details: ArtontheAvenue.org


Call for Entry: Juxtaposed

Deadline: June 10. Target Gallery invites artists working in all visual media to submit to Juxtaposed, a group exhibition focusing on the contradictory or conflicting. Whether it be through the use of mixed media or the themes represented, the work itself should be at odds with two or more juxtaposing concepts.
