Art on the Avenue

Art on the Avenue

Saturday, October 1 from 10-6pm. Art on the Avenue, a multicultural arts festival celebrating our community's diversity through the arts in Alexandria, Virginia. There will be entertainment for all ages, art activities, food and over 300 artists displaying and selling their work all along Mount Vernon Avenue. Fire and Earth

Fire and Earth National Ceramic Cup & Regional 2-D Art Exhibit

Runs through October 2. Fire and earth are two of the four elements. The Fire and Earth art exhibit celebrates these classical elements in a hybrid show combining a national ceramic cup exhibit with a regional 2-D show, exploring how fire transforms earth. The exhibit is juried by Dan Finnegan, an internationally recognized potter. Details: DelRayArtisans.org


Birdhouses of Del Ray

Call for Entry: "Birdhouses of Del Ray" Silent Auction Fundraiser

Drop off October 2 and October 3 from 6-8pm. Looking for artists to design an artistic birdhouse for a Del Ray Artisans' fundraiser. Create your own birdhouse from the materials of your choice or purchase one of our wooden 'blanks' to decorate and embellish and to donate to DRA. Select a 'blank' birdhouse model of your choice ($3-10) at the gallery while supplies last. The Silent Auction will be open for bids October 7-25 during the Local Flavor show. Hiring Assistant Office Manager

Del Ray Artisans’ Personnel Committee is seeking to hire an Assistant Office Manager for the organization. This is a paid position on Thursdays and Fridays, 12-6 pm. Position entails greeting visitors and general office work with emphasis on organizational skills. Knowledge of Microsoft Office required. Local Flavor Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Friday, October 7 from 7-9pm. The Local Flavor art exhibit at Del Ray Artisans showcases member artwork that highlight the things they adore, crave, and experience in their beloved neck of the woods. Come to the opening reception to meet many of the artists, vote for the "Peoples Choice" award winner, place your bids in the "Birdhouses of Del Ray" silent auction, and enjoy all the artwork. Special thanks to local businesses Rosemarino d' Italia, Taqueria el Poblano, Greenstreet Gardens, and Let's Meat on the Avenue for sponsoring artist awards. The exhibit runs October 7-30, 2016. Partners in Art

Monday, October 10 from 2-4pm. Looking for a chance to get together with other creative people to discuss art and exchange ideas? Then come to a meeting of our cooperatively led Partners in Art group. This program is free of charge and open to all. Donations ($1–3) greatly appreciated. Life Drawing - Open Sessions

  • Wednesday, October 12 from 2-5pm (Short/Long Pose)
  • Wednesday, October 12 from 6:30-9:30pm (Long Pose)
  • Sunday, October 23 from 9:30-11:30am (Gesture)
  • Wednesday, October 26 from 2-5pm (Short/Long Pose)
  • Wednesday, October 26 from 6:30-9:30pm (Long Pose)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Annual Member Meeting on October 25

The annual member meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 25 at 7pm and all members in good standing will vote on the nominations for the 2017 Board of Directors. Also come to the meeting to learn about the 2017 exhibit schedule, special upcoming events, and the closing of the "Birdhouses of Del Ray" silent auction! Light supper will be provided. Come Play with Collage Cut Ups

Thursday, October 27 from 7-9pm. Activity lead Millie Mateu will guide you through a fun art activity evening! She will start by doing some creative exercises to loosen us up, and then we'll create some simple collages that have high impact, using "Local Flavor" as inspiration. Call for Entry: 2017 Calendar (Members Only)

Digital entries due: Friday, October 28. Members: Submit your best work to the 4th annual Del Ray Artisans' calendar! All entries are to be received digitally, and no physical pieces of art will be collected. There is no entry fee, no theme, and work previously shown at the gallery is acceptable. Your Del Ray Artisans membership must be up-to-date. This calendar is a fundraiser to benefit Del Ray Artisans, but also a fun way to show your support for our arts organization and share your talent with the community. Cat-urday Toy Making Workshop

Saturday, October 29 from 10am-12pm. Celebrate National Cat Day by making toys for your feline! This workshop gives you all the tools you need to make felt mice & birds, wine cork candies, and a classic stick with string taunting toy, as well as an optional T-shirt cat tent (bring t-shirt). $5 supplies fee. A Call To Service at VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital

Exhibit extended through October 30. Del Ray Artisans' Gallery Without Walls and VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital present A Call to Service, an exhibit honoring the people and animals who contribute to the welfare of others. The artwork is by Del Ray Artisans member artists and is displayed in the waiting areas and examination rooms of VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital (2660 Duke Street, Alexandria VA).   • Seeking Volunteers for 2017 Board of Directors
    The Nominations Committee is looking for members to serve on the Board of Directors in 2017. Board positions are 1-year terms from January 1-December 31.   • Nominating Committee Members
    This is a short-term position with a job to be completed by mid-October. The Nominating Committee puts together the slate of candidates for the 2017 Board of Directors.   • Adopt-a-Park: Pick Up Litter
    Del Ray Artisans volunteers pick up litter in Colasanto Park, which is a part of the City of Alexandria's Adopt-a-Park program. Inspections are on Mondays, so Sunday is the best pick-up day but not a hard rule. We need volunteers to sign up for weekends now through November 30. If you are interested in assisting, contact Marlin with your preferred weekend at AdoptAPark@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Web Posting Volunteers Needed
    Looking for an at-home way to earn volunteer hours? Help post exhibit and event information to the WETA and Eventful websites. The time commitment is usually minimal and can be done from your own computer anywhere! For more information contact Betsy at egmead@gmail.com

Curating & Curator Support

  • Curate/Coordinate an Exhibit outside the Gallery
    Del Ray Artisans’ Gallery Without Walls program is seeking volunteers to coordinate exhibits with specific venues. The program is flexible to incorporate your ideas and value your time. Contact Eileen at GWW@DelRayArtisans.org and Kathy at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Join the Curating Team!
    Volunteer to curate or assist a curator (hanging artwork, data entry / spreadsheets, distributing postcards, people skills). Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Kathy at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Help Curators design their Postcard
    Postcards contain the vital show information: show title, dates, reception information, any special events and other information the curators wish to highlight. Help curators put together this file for the printer. Must have access to software capable of creating printer-ready files (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and be able to email documents. Photography & Video

  • Event Photography
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of Del Ray Artisans events for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Volunteer to photograph opening receptions, workshops, regular programs, or markets. We are hoping for around 10-20 photos from each event. Contact Sean at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Photographers Needed to Document Shows
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of each piece of artwork in a show (as well as some overall gallery shots) for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Contact Sean at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Photograph Processing
    Seeking volunteers to process photos for our Flickr Photostream. Task involves cropping, downsizing, color correcting (if needed), and adding meta data (e.g. artist name, title, media, price, show). Must have Photoshop or comparable application. Contact Sean at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Seeking Videographer / Film Maker
    Seeking a volunteer to record a Del Ray Artisans workshop and edit for online viewing. Alternative option is to create an online course explaining an art or art-related activity. Contact John at VP@DelRayArtisans.org

Call for Entry: Root to Bloom: Place Artists Call Home Exhibit at Principle Gallery

Digital Entries due September 28. Principle gallery invites entries of paintings that are of the featured artists’ place they call “home.” Washington DC artist, Teresa Oaxaca will be the juror.
