Reception for City Manager

Reception for City Manager Mark Jinks (Tonight)

Friday, September 11 from 5-7pm. Del Ray Artisans together with the Del Ray Business Association and the Del Ray Citizens Association are holding a reception recognizing the new City Manager, Mark Jinks. The reception will be held on Friday, September 11 starting at 5pm at Del Ray Artisans gallery (2704 Mount Vernon Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22301). Members of the public are invited to attend. Del Ray Artisans' ALTARS: Religious Rituals art exhibit will be on display during the reception.

Monday, September 14 from 2-4pm. Looking for a chance to get together with other creative people to discuss art and exchange ideas? Life Drawing - Open Sessions

  • Wednesday, September 16 from 6:30-9:30pm (Long Pose)
  • Sunday, September 20 from 9:30-11:30am (Gesture)
  • Wednesday, September 23 from 2-5pm (Short/Long Pose)
  • Thursday, September 24 from 6:30-9:30pm (Long Pose)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Under a Summer Sun Art Exhibit at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter

Runs through September 27. Del Ray Artisans and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria present this fundraising exhibit celebrating warm summer days—past, present and future, and our animal friends' love of summer. Both nonprofits share a percentage of each sale. At this venue patrons may immediately take home purchased artwork. ALTARS: Religious Rituals Art Exhibit

Runs through Sunday, September 27. Del Ray Artisans and Art Latin American Collective Project teamed up to present this unique artistic challenge to their members. Come to the exhibit to view artists’ interpretations of literal and figurative altars in ceremonies worldwide. You’ll find places of heavenly worship and nether worldly sacrifice, simple raised platforms and elaborate structures. Details: DelRayArtisans.org


Art in City Hall 2015 Awards Reception

Monday, September 28 from 4:30-6pm at Alexandria City Hall, Room 2000. Art in City Hall is a collaborative program of the Alexandria Commission for the Arts, the Office of the Arts, The Art League, Del Ray Artisans, and the Torpedo Factory Artists' Association. The exhibit is located in Alexandria City Hall (2nd floor, 300 King St, Alexandria VA). Hours are Monday-Friday from 8am-5pm. The current exhibit runs through December 18, 2015. Skeletons: Exploring Under the Surface Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Art on the Avenue

Saturday, October 3 from 10am-6pm. Come experience Art on the Avenue, a multi-cultural arts festival celebrating our community's diversity through the arts. There will be entertainment for all ages, art activities, food and over 300 artists displaying and selling their work all along Mount Vernon Avenue. VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital Art Show

Runs through January 16. VCA Alexandria Animal Hospital at 2660 Duke Street has joined Del Ray Artisans' Gallery Without Walls family. On August 30 the curator hung the first show featuring art by Del Ray Artisans members selected from past shows. Artwork is displayed in the waiting areas and examination rooms. CALL FOR ENTRY

Skeletons: Exploring Under the Surface

Digital entries due: Monday, September 21. Explore what is under the surface—the framework, the under-structure. See things just a little bit differently. Dig a little deeper. What is under there—literally or figuratively? Artwork depicting typical animal/human skeletons are acceptable if they are beyond the typical. 2D and 3D visual artwork in all mediums, as well as video and audio art, is encouraged. Coloring Book for Grown-Ups

Entries due: Wednesday, September 30. We are putting together a coloring book for grown-ups as a fundraiser to benefit Del Ray Artisans. Break out your pen and ink, charcoal, pencils, digital drawing tools, etc., and enter your art for this cool book. Theme: "Around Alexandria" in the past, present, or even future vision or fantasy—Is that a sea monster in the harbor? A statue coming to life? English ivy literally eating that building? CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 12 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

Time-Sensitive Requests

  • Art on the Avenue: Volunteers needed Saturday, October 3
    Del Ray Artisans participates in the annual arts festival Art on the Avenue. We need volunteers: from 8:30am-10am to set up the DRA tent, artist demo tables/chairs, and create some colorful sidewalk chalk directional arrows to the gallery door; in shifts 10-12pm / 12-2pm / 4-6pm to hand out DRA literature and help visitors with our Photo Op Board; and from 6-7pm to take down the tent, table and chairs.   • Join the 2015 Board of Directors
    We have two open Board Positions: Director of Fundraising Events and Director of Youth Programs. If you are interested in one of the positions or in assisting a director, contact Kim at President@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Adopt-a-Park: Pick Up Litter
    Del Ray Artisans volunteers pick-up litter in Colasanto Park, which is a part of the City of Alexandria's Adopt-a-Park program. Inspections are on Mondays, so Sunday is the best pick-up day but not a hard rule. We need volunteers to sign up for weekends now through November 30. If you are interested in assisting, contact Marlin with your preferred weekend at AdoptAPark@DelRayArtisans.org

  • Layout The Well-Crafted Word newsletter

  • Join the Curating Team!
    Volunteer to curate or assist a curator (hanging artwork, data entry / spreadsheets, distributing postcards, people skills). Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Lesley at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Help Curators design their Postcard
    Postcards contain the vital show information: show title, dates, reception information, any special events and other information the curators wish to highlight. Help curators put together this file for the printer. Must have access to software capable of creating printer-ready files (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and be able to email documents. Photography & Video

  • Event Photography
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of Del Ray Artisans events for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Volunteer to photograph opening receptions, workshops, regular programs, or markets. We are hoping for around 10-20 photos from each event. Contact Sean at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Photographers Needed to Document Shows
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of each piece of artwork in a show (as well as some overall gallery shots) for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Contact Sean at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org

  • Seeking Videographer / Film Maker
    Seeking a volunteer to record a Del Ray Artisans workshop and edit for online viewing. Alternative option is to create an online course explaining an art or art-related activity. Contact John at VP@DelRayArtisans.org

Call for Artists: Art on the Avenue on October 3

Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists and is known for high quality artwork. All work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. Standard booth rate is $195 ($180 for Del Ray Artisans members or students). The first round of judging was in June. Through the end of September the judges fill any remaining spaces as applications are received. For questions about the jury process or the show, email artontheavenue@gmail.com. Artist Fellowship: Sculpture

Application Deadline: October 1. The Virginia Commission for the Arts (VCA) invites Virginia-based artists to apply for the 2015-2016 Artist Fellowships in Sculpture. Four Artist Fellowships of $3,000 will be awarded in 2015-2016 to recognize the creative excellence of individual artists and support the pursuit of artistic excellence. Artists in the discipline of sculpture, who are legal residences of Virginia by October 1, 2015 and who plan to remain in the Commonwealth for the coming year are eligible to apply. Teaching Artist Roster

Application Deadline: October 1 (Cycle A). The Virginia Commission for the Arts invites artists, arts educators and teaching artists to apply to the Teaching Artist Roster. The VCA Teaching Artist Roster is a panel reviewed group of professionals interested in working with Virginia schools and organizations to share the arts with all citizens across the Commonwealth. Artists of all disciplines are encouraged to apply. Teaching Artist Roster applications will be accepted and panel reviewed twice a year: October 1, 2015 (Cycle A) and April 1, 2016 (Cycle B). Call for Entry: WINGS

Entries due by October 26 at 11pm. An all-media, juried show open to all artists, at ArtSpace Falls Church.
