Life Drawing - Open Sessions

  • Sunday, August 23 from 9:30-11:30am (Gesture)
  • Wednesday, August 26 from 2-5pm (Short/Long Poses)
  • Thursday, August 27 from 6:30-9:30pm (Long Poses)

These sessions operate on a drop-in basis so there is no need to register in advance. Bring your supplies and join us at the gallery to draw or paint our live models. The fee for each 3-hour session is $10 for DRA members and $12 for non-members. 2-hour sessions are $8 for members and $10 for non-members. Au Naturel

Au Naturel Art Exhibit

Runs through August 30. Celebrate the natural and exposed, the pure and untouched, the bare, the raw, and the candid. See artists' expressions of no cover or filter! Their work interprets figures, objects, emotions, and feelings; uncompleted projects and unintentional steps "in the process." Patrons can expect to view the vulnerable and the powerful expressions of objects or beings in full exposure or that are in their truest and most candid form and natural state. ALTARS

ALTARS: Religious Rituals Art Exhibit Opening Reception

Friday, September 4 from 7-9pm. Del Ray Artisans and Art Latin American Collective Project teamed up to present this unique artistic challenge to their members. Come to the exhibit to view artists’ interpretations of literal and figurative altars in ceremonies worldwide. You’ll find places of heavenly worship and nether worldly sacrifice, simple raised platforms and elaborate structures. Show runs September 4-27, 2015. Details: DelRayArtisans.org

Tuesday, September 15 from 7-9pm. Whether creating a collaborative piece, sharing ideas on current art events, or brainstorming for the next show, this informal program is designed to provide a positive and motivational environment for artists to network and share ideas. Under a Summer Sun Art Exhibit at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter

Runs through September 27. Del Ray Artisans and the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria present this fundraising exhibit celebrating warm summer days—past, present and future, and our animal friends' love of summer. Both nonprofits share a percentage of each sale. At this venue patrons may immediately take home purchased artwork. View the art weekends from 12-5pm and weekdays from 12-7pm (closed Wednesday) at the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter at 4101 Eisenhower Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22304. Invitation from The Arts of Hancock County: Thanks Y'all (Members Only)

Shipped artwork must be received by Monday, August 24. The Arts Hancock County has invited Del Ray Artisans (DRA) members to be part of a very special Thanks Y'all art exhibit and event that they are hosting on Saturday, August 29 in Bay St. Louis, Mississippi, commemorating the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. Receiving: Sunday, August 30 and Monday, August 31, 2015 from 6-8pm. They could reflect places of heavenly worship or nether worldly sacrifice. They can be simple raised platforms or elaborate structures used for religious ceremonies. Think of them literally or figuratively. Artists, dig deep into your imaginations! Art on the Avenue "Photo Op Board" Proposals

Proposals due: Saturday, September 5. Create a scene for a "Photo Op Board" (also known as a "Head in the Hole" board) for the public to use on the front lawn of Del Ray Artisans gallery during Art on the Avenue! There isn't a set theme for the "Photo Op Board"; however, you may wish to propose an art, art-related, or Fall Harvest concept. Download the form at: DelRayArtisans.org/CFE


Skeletons: Exploring Under the Surface

Digital entries due: Monday, September 21. Explore what is under the surface—the framework, the under-structure. See things just a little bit differently. Dig a little deeper. What is under there—literally or figuratively? Artwork depicting typical animal/human skeletons are acceptable if they are beyond the typical. 2D and 3D visual artwork in all mediums, as well as video and audio art, is encouraged. Coloring Book for Grown-Ups

Entries due: Wednesday, September 30. We are putting together a coloring book for grown-ups as a fundraiser to benefit Del Ray Artisans. Break out your pen and ink, charcoal, pencils, digital drawing tools, etc., and enter your art for this cool book. Theme: "Around Alexandria" in the past, present, or even future vision or fantasy—Is that a sea monster in the harbor? A statue coming to life? English ivy literally eating that building? CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

Del Ray Artisans members are required to volunteer for at least 12 hours per year to support the organization and its mission. Below are some volunteer opportunities.

Time-Sensitive Requests

  • Reception for City Manager on Friday, September 11
    Volunteers are needed to help with the reception recognizing the new City Manager Mark Jinx. Volunteer tasks include helping set up for the event (table, food spread), greeting visitors, and clean up. The event will start at 5pm. Volunteers will be needed in 2-hour shifts between 4pm-8pm.   • Art on the Avenue: Volunteers needed Saturday, October 3
    Del Ray Artisans participates in the annual arts festival Art on the Avenue. We need volunteers: from 8:30am-10am to set up the DRA tent, artist demo tables/chairs, and create some colorful sidewalk chalk directional arrows to the gallery door; in shifts 10-12pm / 12-2pm / 4-6pm to hand out DRA literature and help visitors with our Photo Op Board; and from 6-7pm to take down the tent, table and chairs.   • Join the 2015 Board of Directors
    We have two open Board Positions: Director of Fundraising Events and Director of Youth Programs. If you are interested in one of the positions or in assisting a director, contact Kim at President@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Adopt-a-Park: Pick Up Litter
    Del Ray Artisans volunteers pick-up litter in Colasanto Park, which is a part of the City of Alexandria's Adopt-a-Park program. Inspections are on Mondays, so Sunday is the best pick-up day but not a hard rule. We need volunteers to sign up for weekends now through November 30. If you are interested in assisting, contact Marlin with your preferred weekend at AdoptAPark@DelRayArtisans.org

  • Post our Events on assigned Online Calendars
    Post approved DRA publicity materials on a specific online calendar. Each volunteer will have one or two calendars to update; instructions will be given. Must have internet access. Contact Dawn at Technology@DelRayArtisans.org

Curating & Curator Support

  • Join the Curating Team!
    Volunteer to curate or assist a curator (hanging artwork, data entry / spreadsheets, distributing postcards, people skills). Experienced past curators especially needed, but all volunteers are welcome. Contact Lesley at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Help Curators design their Postcard
    Postcards contain the vital show information: show title, dates, reception information, any special events and other information the curators wish to highlight. Help curators put together this file for the printer. Must have access to software capable of creating printer-ready files (e.g. Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, etc.) and be able to email documents. Helpful skills: creative design and content proofing. Contact Lesley at Curating@DelRayArtisans.org

Photography & Video

  • Event Photography
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of Del Ray Artisans events for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Volunteer to photograph opening receptions, workshops, regular programs, or markets. We are hoping for around 10-20 photos from each event. Contact Sean at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Photographers Needed to Document Shows
    Seeking volunteers to take photos of each piece of artwork in a show (as well as some overall gallery shots) for our archives and Flickr Photostream. Contact Sean at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Photograph Processing
    Seeking volunteers to process photos for our Flickr Photostream. Task involves cropping, downsizing, color correcting (if needed), and adding meta data (e.g. artist name, title, media, price, show). Must have Photoshop or comparable application. Contact Sean at Archives@DelRayArtisans.org
  • Seeking Videographer / Film Maker
    Seeking a volunteer to record a Del Ray Artisans workshop and edit for online viewing. Alternative option is to create an online course explaining an art or art-related activity. Contact John at VP@DelRayArtisans.org

LACDA 2015 International Juried Competition

Deadline for entries: August 24. Entrants submit three JPEG files of original work. All styles of artwork and photography where digital processes of any kind were integral to the creation of the images are acceptable. The competition is international, open to all geographical locations. Exhibit dates: September 10-October 3, 2015. Winners announced: August 31. Artists reception: Saturday, September 12, 6-9pm. ArtSpace Herndon Expressions Portrait Competition

Due by Tuesday, September 8. Artists 18 years or older may submit original 2D or 3D portrait art as defined - “a painting, sculpture, or other artistic representation in which the face and its expression is predominant with the intent to display the likeness, personality, and even the mood of the person”. Finalists will be featured in the Expressions Portrait Exhibit (October 5 – November 1, 2015). For details, visit: artspaceherndon.org


Call for Artists: Art on the Avenue on October 3

Art on the Avenue is a multicultural arts festival organized by the Del Ray Community Partnership. The show welcomes applications from all craft artists and is known for high quality artwork. All work must be original, handmade, created and exhibited by the approved artist. Standard booth rate is $195 ($180 for Del Ray Artisans members or students). The first round of judging was in June. Through the end of September the judges fill any remaining spaces as applications are received. For questions about the jury process or the show, email artontheavenue@gmail.com.
